Suzuki India specifies 22 psi in the front tyre and 29 psi in the rear for both solo and dual riding, measured when the tyres are cold. Use those figures only when they match the current owner’s manual or vehicle label for your motorcycle.
There is no manufacturer-backed, independently verified km/l figure or guaranteed percentage improvement for a V-Strom SX on every route. Traffic, wind, speed, hills, payload, tyre condition and riding style can change tank-to-tank results substantially. Treat the practices below as ways to reduce avoidable fuel use and measure your own results under comparable conditions—not as a promise of a particular mileage number.

What makes the V-Strom SX use more or less fuel?
Fuel consumption is the result of how much work the engine must do and how efficiently the motorcycle transfers that work to the road. On a long ride, the largest controllable influences are throttle smoothness, speed, gear selection, braking, clutch use, aerodynamic load, tyre pressure, chain condition and engine maintenance.

The V-Strom SX is a 249 cm³, fuel-injected motorcycle with a six-speed transmission and a 12-litre fuel tank. Suzuki says its Suzuki Eco Performance (SEP) engine design and Suzuki Oil Cooling System (SOCS) support low fuel consumption. Those are Suzuki design claims, not independent road-test measurements, so the specifications should not be converted into a guaranteed range or km/l result.

Use the bike’s six ratios to keep the engine working comfortably rather than repeatedly accelerating hard and then braking. A high gear at an unsuitable speed can make the engine labour; a low gear held at unnecessary revs can waste fuel. The efficient choice is the gear that permits smooth progress, clean acceleration and adequate control for the road and load.
Set the motorcycle up before you leave
Check cold tyre pressure
Check both tyres before riding, while they are cold and before heat from speed or sunlight has raised the pressure. Suzuki India lists 22 psi at the front and 29 psi at the rear for the V-Strom SX/V-Strom 250, for both solo and dual riding. The 2024 English manual copy available outside Suzuki gives the same cold-pressure values, but your current market-specific owner’s manual and the pressure label on the motorcycle take priority if they differ.

Tyre pressure is a safety and handling specification first, not a mileage-adjustment dial. Suzuki warns that low pressure can contribute to wobbling, overheating and poor pickup. Excessive pressure reduces the tyre’s contact with the road and can affect grip and braking. Do not overinflate or deliberately reduce pressure to chase fuel economy.

Look for cuts, embedded objects, bulges, exposed cords and uneven wear. A tyre that loses pressure between checks needs investigation rather than repeated inflation. If handling changes, stop and identify the cause before continuing a long journey.
Confirm chain condition and tension
A drive chain that is too loose, too tight, dry or damaged wastes power and can compromise control. Check its condition and tension according to the owner’s manual. Clean and lubricate it with products suitable for motorcycle chains when required, but do not assume a particular cleaner or lubricant will produce a measured fuel saving. The practical goal is correct adjustment and reliable power transfer.

Remove unnecessary mass and drag
Pack only what the route requires. Secure luggage so it cannot move, interfere with steering or braking, contact the chain or exhaust, or cover lights and registration plates. Suzuki advises against overloading, but the reviewed material does not establish a universal payload number. Use the load limit in the current manual, and account for the rider, passenger, luggage and accessories together.
Large soft bags, top boxes and loosely strapped items can add aerodynamic drag, especially at sustained road speeds. Keep the load compact and balanced instead of hanging heavy items far behind the rear axle. Do not remove safety equipment merely to save weight.
Ride smoothly for lower fuel use
Roll on the throttle progressively
Open the throttle in a measured way and allow the motorcycle to build speed without repeated bursts. Abrupt acceleration demands more fuel and often creates a cycle of hard braking followed by another hard acceleration. Smooth inputs also reduce passenger movement and make it easier to maintain a steady pace.
Choose gears for the road, not a fixed rpm number
Shift up when the engine can pull cleanly without shuddering, and shift down before a hill, pass or corner if the higher gear makes the engine labour. Avoid holding a low gear at unnecessarily high revs when traffic and road conditions permit an upshift. There is no single “best” gear for every V-Strom SX ride; gradient, wind, load and speed change the appropriate choice.
Look ahead and preserve momentum
Read traffic lights, junctions, bends and climbing sections early. Closing the throttle sooner can reduce the need for harsh braking, while a suitable gear keeps the motorcycle controllable as speed falls. Do not coast in neutral or switch off the engine while moving; retain the control and engine response needed for the situation.

Use the clutch only as needed
Do not ride for long periods with the clutch lever partially pulled. Suzuki India’s mileage guidance states: “Continuous riding with clutch lever partially pressed or/and riding with brake partially applied increase fuel consumption.” Partial clutch engagement creates heat and friction instead of transmitting all available engine power to the rear wheel. Fully release the lever once the manoeuvre is complete, and avoid slipping the clutch unnecessarily in slow traffic.
Release a dragging brake
A brake that remains partially applied creates resistance and heat. After a ride, unusual heat, a burning smell, a wheel that does not rotate freely when checked safely, or a persistent change in performance warrants inspection by a qualified technician. Do not diagnose a brake fault from fuel consumption alone.
Maintain a safe, legal, steady speed
Suzuki India’s service page includes an “optimum driving speed of 40 to 50 Km/h” in general mileage advice for two-wheelers. That is not a V-Strom SX highway prescription. Do not ride below a safe traffic speed or create a hazard to save fuel. On a long route, choose a legal speed that suits traffic, visibility, road surface, weather, wind and the motorcycle’s load, then hold it smoothly where conditions allow.
Decide carefully when to stop the engine
Suzuki’s general guidance suggests switching off the engine when stopped for more than two minutes. Treat this as a fuel-saving tip only where the motorcycle is safely stationary and stopping the engine will not compromise control, visibility, rapid movement or traffic safety. Never shut down in a situation where you may need immediate power to avoid a hazard.
Maintenance that protects efficiency
Scheduled maintenance prevents avoidable friction, poor combustion and rolling resistance. Exact intervals, fluids, clearances and replacement requirements depend on the motorcycle’s market and model year, so the current owner’s manual governs. Suzuki’s model-specific maintenance guidance highlights the following areas.

Do not turn simplified blog checklists or approximate inspection advice into definitive service intervals. If a service is due before departure, complete it through the procedure specified for your motorcycle, preferably with an authorised Suzuki service centre when specialist diagnosis is needed.
A practical pre-ride and daily-ride procedure
Before the first kilometre
- Read the current owner’s manual and note the specified cold tyre pressures, load limit, chain procedure and service requirements.
- Check the front and rear tyres with a reliable gauge while they are cold. For the V-Strom SX values listed by Suzuki India, set 22 psi front and 29 psi rear, unless your bike’s current documentation says otherwise.
- Inspect tread, sidewalls, valves and rims for damage or an obvious leak.
- Check chain condition and tension, and correct it using the manual’s measurement and adjustment method.
- Operate the brakes and controls. Investigate a soft lever, unusual noise, dragging sensation or warning light before departure.
- Confirm oil, coolant and battery condition as specified for the motorcycle.
- Pack and secure luggage within the approved load. Keep heavy items low and central, and verify that nothing can contact the wheel, chain, exhaust or controls.
- Plan fuel stops conservatively. The 12-litre tank is a capacity specification, not a guaranteed touring range.
During each riding day
- Let the motorcycle reach normal operating behaviour without extended, unnecessary idling.
- Accelerate progressively, select a gear that lets the engine pull cleanly, and avoid riding with the clutch partly engaged.
- Scan well ahead so you can ease off earlier instead of alternating hard acceleration and harsh braking.
- Maintain a safe, legal pace appropriate to traffic, weather, road and load.
- At fuel or rest stops, look for new tyre damage, chain problems, leaks, brake heat or a warning light.
- Record fuel added and distance travelled if you are monitoring consumption.
How to measure your own fuel-efficiency change
Because no reviewed official source provides a controlled long-ride km/l result for the V-Strom SX, your own tank-to-tank log is more useful than an internet claim. Make comparisons only when the conditions are reasonably similar.
- Fill the tank to the same practical level each time. Do not overfill or spill fuel.
- Reset the trip meter, or record the odometer reading.
- Record the route type, approximate speed, rider and passenger load, luggage, weather and tyre-pressure check.
- Ride normally and avoid changing several variables at once if you are trying to identify an improvement.
- At the next refill, record the litres added and the distance travelled.
- Calculate distance divided by litres added. This produces an estimate for that tank, not a laboratory result.
- Repeat across multiple tanks before deciding that a small difference is meaningful, because wind, traffic, hills and fuel-pump shutoff variation can obscure a change.
Compare smooth riding with abrupt riding only on routes and loads that are similar enough to make the comparison fair. Do not convert the 12-litre capacity into a predicted distance without an observed consumption figure.

- Do not overinflate the tyres. Higher pressure can reduce contact with the road and affect grip and braking.
- Do not lower pressure below specification. Suzuki associates low pressure with wobbling, overheating and low pickup.
- Do not ride at an unsafe “economy speed.” The generic 40–50 km/h wording on Suzuki’s service page is not a highway instruction for this motorcycle.
- Do not coast in neutral or keep the clutch partly pulled. You lose control benefits, and partial clutch use increases fuel consumption and heat.
- Do not exceed the load limit. The available material does not establish a universal payload number; use the limit for your exact motorcycle.
- Do not assume an additive, accessory or lubricant guarantees a saving. The available Suzuki guidance supports correct maintenance, not a product-specific mileage promise.
- Do not ignore a sudden change. Mileage alone cannot identify the fault, but a persistent drop combined with poor running, brake drag, a warning light, tyre damage or a chain problem requires inspection.
When a sudden mileage drop needs attention
Normal consumption varies with route and conditions, and the available guidance does not define a universal threshold for an “abnormal” drop. Treat a new, persistent change as a reason to inspect the motorcycle rather than immediately changing riding technique.

- Recheck cold tyre pressures and look for a slow puncture.
- Check for a dry, damaged or incorrectly adjusted chain.
- Look for brake drag, unusual wheel heat or a burning smell.
- Confirm that scheduled oil, filter and other maintenance is current.
- Review whether speed, headwind, hills, passenger weight, luggage or traffic changed.
- If a warning light appears or the motorcycle runs unusually, arrange diagnosis with an authorised Suzuki service centre.
Stop riding if a tyre, brake, steering or control problem makes the motorcycle unsafe. Fuel economy is never a reason to continue with a mechanical or safety defect.

Solo and two-up long-distance riding
Suzuki India lists the same 22 psi front and 29 psi rear pressures for solo and dual riding. Do not invent a different pressure split for a passenger. Two-up riding still changes acceleration, braking distance, cornering behaviour and suspension load, so respect the approved combined weight and adapt speed and following distance to the conditions.
With a passenger or additional luggage, smoother throttle and earlier planning become more important because the motorcycle carries more mass. Keep the load secure and balanced, and use the owner’s manual for any suspension or load adjustment provided for your model and market.
What the official specifications do—and do not—tell you
The 249 cm³ displacement, fuel injection, six-speed gearbox and 12-litre tank describe the motorcycle’s configuration. Suzuki’s SEP and SOCS descriptions explain the manufacturer’s intended efficiency and cooling approach. None of these facts establishes how many kilometres a particular rider will obtain on a particular long ride.
There is no independently verified, dated long-ride fuel-economy statistic in the reviewed official material. A claim such as “the V-Strom SX always returns a specific km/l figure” or “this method saves a fixed percentage” would be broader than the evidence supports. Use the manufacturer’s specifications for planning and your own consistent fuel log for comparison.
