Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFor a Jimny used mainly in stop-and-go traffic, choose the automatic if reducing clutch work and simplifying congestion is your priority. Choose the manual if you prefer selecting gears yourself and want to prioritize the slightly lower official fuel-consumption figures published for the markets reviewed. Neither transmission is a universal winner: availability, equipment, model year and fuel-economy figures vary by country and trim, and no independent same-market back-to-back test establishes a decisive everyday advantage.
The right answer depends less on the Jimny badge than on your routine. A commuter who spends much of the week crawling through traffic will usually value the automatic’s convenience. A driver who enjoys clutch-and-gear control, drives less congested routes or places greater weight on the lower published consumption figures may prefer the manual.

Automatic or manual: the short decision
| Choose the 4-speed automatic when… | Choose the 5-speed manual when… |
|---|---|
| Your daily route contains frequent stop-start congestion. | You actively want to operate a clutch and select gears. |
| Reducing repeated clutch work is more important than the lowest published consumption figure. | You want to consider the lower official consumption figures reported in the Australia and India examples. |
| The automatic is offered on the local Jimny trim and body style you want. | The manual is available in your chosen trim and suits your driving preference. |
| You are comfortable accepting a 4-speed automatic rather than a 5-speed manual. | You expect to use the vehicle in conditions where direct gear selection is part of the appeal, while still checking the exact vehicle and terrain. |
This is a use-case recommendation, not a claim that one gearbox is mechanically superior in every country. Confirm the specification for your market and model year before ordering.

Which transmissions does the Jimny offer?
In the Australian range shown on Suzuki Australia’s current specifications page, the Jimny is listed with a five-speed manual or a four-speed automatic. The Lite version shown there is manual-only, so the automatic is not available on every trim. Maruti Suzuki’s Indian launch material from June 2023 likewise lists a five-speed MT and a four-speed AT.

Those facts should not be generalized to every Jimny sold worldwide. The name covers different local ranges and model references. The Japanese Jimny Nomade page is a separate market reference, and its published engine figures should not be treated as proof of how another country’s transmission options perform. Before comparing dealer quotes, check:
- the country in which the vehicle will be registered;
- the model year and exact trim or body style;
- whether the chosen trim is manual-only, automatic-only or offered with both;
- the local owner’s manual and specification sheet for transmission and four-wheel-drive equipment.
What changes in everyday city driving?
Stop-start traffic
Maruti Suzuki NEXA describes the automatic Jimny with the phrase Smoother driving in traffic.
That is the manufacturer’s product positioning, not an independent comparative test, but it identifies the practical reason many urban buyers consider the automatic: the driver does not repeatedly press a clutch pedal and select first gear as traffic advances and stops.
If your commute involves long queues, frequent intersections or slow-moving urban streets, count how many times you would otherwise engage the clutch during a typical trip. The automatic’s value is greatest when that workload is a daily occurrence. If congestion is occasional, the convenience benefit may be less important than your preference for manual control.

For a routine that alternates between open roads, parking manoeuvres and brief errands, neither transmission can be declared better from the available evidence. The relevant question is which task you find more tiring or more enjoyable. Drive both versions over the same route if possible, including a congested section, a quiet road and a parking area.
Highway and open-road use
The supplied sources do not establish independent figures for acceleration, overtaking, cruising noise or real-world highway economy. Do not infer a guaranteed highway advantage from the number of gears alone. During a test drive, assess whether the transmission keeps the engine response predictable for your own speeds and whether you are comfortable with its shift decisions or gear changes. Record your impressions separately from the official economy figures.
What the gear-count difference does—and does not—tell you
The five-speed manual and four-speed automatic have different control methods as well as different numbers of forward ratios. More ratios do not automatically mean quicker acceleration, quieter cruising or lower consumption. Those outcomes depend on the engine calibration, final-drive ratio, vehicle load, road gradient and the way each gearbox selects or holds a ratio.
In the manual, you decide when to change gear and can hold a lower ratio for a hill or a slow manoeuvre. In the automatic, the transmission makes those changes for you, which can reduce workload but may not always select the ratio you would have chosen. This is why a same-route drive matters more than assuming that the five-speed label is inherently better. Treat gear count as a specification to understand, not as a performance verdict.

Fuel economy: keep the markets separate
Official figures are useful for comparing versions within the same published test context, but Australia and India report different units and source-year contexts. They are not a single global test result and should not be merged into one ranking.
Australia: Suzuki’s current specifications page
| Transmission | Published fuel consumption | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| 5-speed manual | 6.4 L/100 km | Suzuki Australia’s figure on its current Jimny specifications page, accessed in 2026; it is a published value, not a promise of an individual driver’s real-world result. |
| 4-speed automatic | 6.9 L/100 km | Suzuki Australia’s figure on the same page and under the same local specification context; driving conditions, traffic and vehicle load can change actual consumption. |
On that Australian page, the manual’s published figure is 0.5 L/100 km lower than the automatic’s. Treat the difference as a specification-sheet comparison, not as a guaranteed saving over every route.
India: Maruti Suzuki launch figures from 2023
| Transmission | Published fuel-efficiency figure | Source context |
|---|---|---|
| 5-speed MT | 16.94 km/l | Maruti Suzuki India’s June 2023 Jimny launch material. |
| 4-speed AT | 16.39 km/l | Maruti Suzuki India’s June 2023 Jimny launch material. |
The Indian figures show the manual ahead by 0.55 km/l in that launch publication. Do not convert them into an Australian result or compare the numerical size directly with the Australian L/100 km difference without the relevant test-cycle and market context.
How to use the figures when buying
- Find the official specification for the country where you will drive the car.
- Check that the figure belongs to the same body style, trim and model year as the vehicle you are considering.
- Use the number to estimate a baseline, then leave room for traffic, hills, temperature, payload, tyre pressures and driving style.
- Compare manual and automatic only within that local source and test context.
Is the manual better off-road?
Maruti Suzuki NEXA positions the manual as an off-roading choice. That statement describes the manufacturer’s intended positioning; it does not prove that every manual Jimny is superior to every automatic in every terrain. Suzuki Australia’s specifications show both transmissions within a Jimny range that uses part-time four-wheel drive, so transmission choice is only one part of an off-road decision.
For a particular trail, verify the complete vehicle rather than relying on the gearbox label:
- confirm the local transfer-case and four-wheel-drive specification;
- check ground clearance, approach and departure geometry and tyre equipment for the exact trim;
- consider the surface, gradients, ruts and water crossings you actually expect;
- ask whether you value direct gear selection enough to accept clutch operation during slow manoeuvres;
- obtain local guidance on legal access and recovery equipment before travelling off-road.
If most of your driving is urban and off-road trips are occasional, do not select the manual solely because of the positioning statement. If off-road control is a central reason for buying a Jimny, arrange a drive in the exact transmission and equipment package you would purchase.
Traffic convenience versus driver involvement
What the automatic gives you
- Less repeated clutch operation in queues and at intersections.
- A simpler routine when traffic speed changes constantly.
- A reasonable fit for buyers who value ease over choosing every gear.
These are practical use-case benefits, not measured performance claims. The NEXA wording supports the traffic-convenience description, while no independent source in the supplied material measures pedal effort, fatigue or journey time.

What the manual gives you
- Five forward ratios in the markets documented, compared with four in the automatic.
- Direct responsibility for clutch engagement and gear selection.
- The lower published consumption figure in both the Australian and Indian examples reviewed.
Whether those characteristics matter more than automatic convenience is personal. Some drivers regard gear selection as part of the Jimny experience; others would rather remove that task from every commute.

Plan the choice around your actual week
Write down a representative week rather than deciding from an occasional holiday route. Mark the days with queues, the days with open-road driving and the number of trips that involve tight parking or steep ramps. A driver facing congestion on most weekdays experiences the automatic’s convenience repeatedly, whereas a driver who encounters traffic only once a week may notice the manual’s involvement more often than its inconvenience.
Also separate the vehicle’s main job from its imagined backup job. If the Jimny is primarily a city runabout with a few annual trail trips, weight the daily commute heavily and verify that the automatic is available in the desired trim. If it is primarily a recreational four-wheel-drive, place more emphasis on low-speed control, the exact transfer-case equipment and your confidence operating the chosen transmission. There is no need to force every buyer into the same answer.
Trim availability can decide the purchase
Transmission preference is irrelevant if the desired gearbox is not sold with the trim you want. Suzuki Australia’s displayed range illustrates the issue: the Lite is manual-only, while other local variants may list both transmissions. India’s 2023 launch material confirms that both a five-speed MT and four-speed AT were part of that market’s offering, but it does not make every trim or later model year identical.
Ask the dealer to put the following in writing on the quotation or specification sheet:
- exact trim name and model year;
- transmission type and number of forward speeds;
- body style and seating configuration;
- four-wheel-drive and transfer-case equipment;
- the official local fuel-consumption or efficiency figure and its test context;
- warranty and service requirements for that transmission.
A decision framework for common Jimny buyers
| Your routine | Initial lean | What to verify before deciding |
|---|---|---|
| Daily urban commute with repeated queues | 4-speed automatic | Automatic availability on the chosen trim and a same-route test drive. |
| Mostly open roads, with a strong preference for manual control | 5-speed manual | Local economy figure, clutch comfort and willingness to shift every trip. |
| Frequent recreational off-road driving | Either, depending on preference | Exact four-wheel-drive equipment, terrain and the transmission you can operate confidently at low speed. |
| Fuel use is the leading priority | 5-speed manual in the cited examples | Your market’s official figure; do not substitute Australian data for an Indian vehicle or vice versa. |
| Occasional congestion but mixed use | Test both | Which workload you notice more on the same route: clutch operation or giving up manual gear choice. |
How to test-drive the two versions properly
A short dealership loop can hide the difference between transmissions. Use a repeatable route and write down observations immediately.
- Confirm the cars are comparable. Match market, model year, trim, tyre specification and four-wheel-drive equipment as closely as possible.
- Drive a congested section. Note how you feel after repeated stops, starts and low-speed turns. Do not describe the result as a fuel or performance test.
- Use an open road. Observe whether the gear changes or clutch work suit your preferred pace. The available sources do not provide independent acceleration or noise measurements, so keep this qualitative.
- Perform parking manoeuvres. Try reversing, tight turns and hill starts where legal and safe. Decide which control layout feels more predictable to you.
- Ask for the exact specification sheet. Record the official local economy figure and any trim restrictions before comparing prices.
- Drive the version you would actually buy. A test in a different trim or market specification cannot confirm the equipment or availability of your order.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Treating a manufacturer’s description as a test result
Smoother driving in traffic
is NEXA’s wording for the automatic. It supports a convenience-oriented choice but is not an independent measurement. Present it as positioning, not proof of lower fatigue, faster journeys or better economy.
Assuming every Jimny has the same specification
The Australian Lite example is manual-only, and the Japanese Nomade page is a distinct market reference. Check local trim availability instead of importing an overseas specification into your buying decision.
Expecting official economy to predict your exact tank-to-tank result
The 6.4 and 6.9 L/100 km Australian values and the 16.94 and 16.39 km/l Indian values are published figures. They are useful baselines, not guarantees for a particular driver, route or load.
Choosing the gearbox for imagined use
If you rarely leave the city, do not let a theoretical trail scenario outweigh every weekday commute. If off-road travel is the main purpose, do not choose solely from a traffic recommendation. Match the transmission to the activity that dominates your ownership.

- Identify the registration market and model year.
- Confirm whether the desired trim offers a 5-speed manual, a 4-speed automatic or only one of them.
- Write down the official local economy figure with its units and publication context.
- Estimate how often your normal route involves stop-start traffic.
- Decide whether clutch work or loss of manual gear control would bother you more.
- Check the exact part-time four-wheel-drive and transfer-case equipment if you plan to leave paved roads.
- Test-drive both transmissions on a representative route whenever possible.
- Base the final choice on the vehicle you can actually order, not a specification from another country.
Bottom line
The Jimny automatic is the sensible everyday choice when traffic convenience is your highest priority. The manual is the better fit for drivers who want five-speed gear control and are willing to manage a clutch, with lower published fuel-consumption figures in the Australian and Indian examples cited. Check your local trim, model year and official figures, then test the transmission that matches your real routine.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Suzuki Jimny automatic better for city driving?
It is usually the more convenient choice when your week contains frequent queues, repeated stops and slow intersections because it removes routine clutch operation. Maruti Suzuki NEXA describes its automatic as offering “Smoother driving in traffic,” but that is manufacturer positioning rather than an independent fatigue or journey-time test. If congestion is occasional, drive both and decide whether convenience outweighs your preference for manual control.

Is every Jimny available with both transmissions?
No. In Suzuki Australia’s displayed range, the Lite is manual-only, while other variants may offer the five-speed manual and four-speed automatic. India’s 2023 launch material lists both types, but trim and model-year availability can change. Confirm the exact local trim, body style, model year and transmission on the dealer’s specification sheet before paying a deposit.
Is a manual Jimny automatically better off-road?
No universal conclusion is established. NEXA positions the manual for off-roading, while Suzuki Australia’s specifications show both transmissions in a part-time four-wheel-drive Jimny range. Terrain, transfer-case equipment, tyres, geometry and driver confidence also matter. Choose the transmission you can operate smoothly at low speed, then verify the complete four-wheel-drive specification for the route you intend to drive.
Can I compare Australia’s fuel figures directly with India’s?
Do not treat them as one test result. Australia reports 6.4 and 6.9 L/100 km, while India’s 2023 launch figures are 16.94 and 16.39 km/l. The publications use different units and market contexts. Use the official figure for the country where you will register and drive the vehicle, and compare manual with automatic only within that local context.

The gear count alone cannot establish acceleration, overtaking response, cruising noise or real-world economy. Those outcomes depend on calibration, ratios, load and driving conditions, and no independent same-market back-to-back test was established for this comparison. During a test drive, judge the predictability of the shifts or clutch work at your normal speeds instead of assuming one gearbox wins from its specification.
What should I check before ordering a Jimny automatic?
Confirm the registration market, model year, exact trim and body style; verify that the automatic is offered; record the local fuel-economy figure and its units; and check the part-time four-wheel-drive and transfer-case equipment. Ask for warranty and service requirements in writing. Finally, drive the same transmission on a route containing congestion, open road sections and parking manoeuvres.
Which Jimny transmission should a fuel-conscious buyer choose?
Start with the official local comparison rather than a figure from another country. In the Australian and Indian examples cited, the manual has the lower published consumption number. That advantage is a specification-sheet result, not a promised tank-to-tank saving. Traffic, hills, payload, tyre pressures, temperature and driving style can change actual use, so the best choice still depends on your routine and willingness to operate a clutch.
The Bottom Line
Choose the Jimny automatic for repeated congested commuting; choose the manual for hands-on gear control and the lower published consumption figures in the cited markets. Verify local trim availability and test-drive the exact version you can order.
