There is not enough verified, vehicle-specific EPA data here to name the 2025 SUV with the worst gas mileage or publish a defensible bottom-of-the-market ranking. The available figures offer context—particularly for large truck-based SUVs—but a reliable list must compare each exact 2025 trim and drivetrain using EPA combined MPG.
Why a definitive worst-mileage list needs exact EPA records
A model name alone is not enough to establish fuel economy. Different engines, trims, and drivetrains can have different ratings, so a ranking needs to identify the precise configuration behind every figure. The primary comparison should be EPA combined MPG, with city and highway MPG shown alongside it when available.
The EPA says its fuel-economy estimates are based on testing at its National Vehicle and Fuel Emissions Laboratory and manufacturer-submitted test data. Its test-car data page lists a 2025 data file dated January 2026. EPA also notes that label values may be revised when evidence shows they are too high, making a check of current vehicle records important before treating a figure as final.
What the published 2025 comparisons can—and cannot—tell you
An Associated Press comparison published August 13, 2025, reported up to 24 mpg combined for the 2025 Chevrolet Tahoe with its optional diesel and up to 18 mpg combined for the 2025 Nissan Armada V6. Those are figures for the configurations discussed in that comparison, not proof that either model—or any particular configuration—is the least efficient SUV on sale in 2025. The comparison does not establish a full-market ranking.

EPA averages are not a ranking of the least-efficient SUVs
For model year 2024, the EPA reported an average of 25.7 mpg for truck SUVs, 1.0 mpg higher than model year 2023. That is a category-wide average, not a rating for a specific SUV and not a 2025 worst-in-class figure. The EPA’s Automotive Trends explorer covers model years 1975–2025, but it identifies the 2025 summary values as preliminary. Aggregate trends cannot substitute for a model-by-model comparison.
How to build a fair 2025 SUV comparison
- Set the scope. Decide whether the list covers gasoline-only SUVs or includes hybrids. Keep plug-in hybrids and electric vehicles out of a gasoline-MPG ranking, or present their fuel economy separately using the appropriate measure, such as MPGe.
- Filter by model year and vehicle type. Use the EPA’s 2025 test-car data and vehicle-specific records at fueleconomy.gov to identify 2025 SUVs.
- Record each exact configuration. Include trim, engine, drivetrain, and fuel type so that readers can distinguish versions of the same model.
- Sort by combined MPG. Use EPA combined MPG as the primary ranking measure, and show city and highway MPG where the vehicle record provides them.
- Verify the lowest entries. Check the current EPA vehicle pages and manufacturer specifications for the configurations at the bottom of the list, since fuel-economy label values can be revised.
Without those underlying vehicle-specific records, a numbered list would imply a level of completeness the available figures do not support. The verified examples suggest that some large truck-based SUVs have low combined ratings, but they do not identify the market’s bottom-ranked 2025 configuration.
