The widely publicized 316.11 mph average claim from 2020 was later disputed and should not be treated as an established record.
What speed did the SSC Tuatara record?
SSC North America reports that the Tuatara averaged 282.9 mph (455.3 km/h) across two runs on January 17, 2021, at the Kennedy Space Center Launch and Landing Facility in Florida. SSC lists the individual runs as 279.7 mph northbound and 286.1 mph southbound. The average of those two directions is the result to use when describing the 2021 two-way run.
SSC says Racelogic USA provided technical support, gathered speed and time data with a VBOX 3i 100 Hz GNSS system, and validated the data. These are details and claims presented by the manufacturer on its record page; that page is not, by itself, an independent record authority.
Why the 295 mph figure is different
SSC’s May 2022 press release reports that customer Larry Caplin reached a peak speed of 295.0 mph (474.8 km/h) at the Kennedy Space Center facility, with Racelogic recording the result. This is a one-pass peak, not a two-way average. It therefore should not be presented as a new two-way record or directly substituted for the 2021 average.

The distinction is about what was measured, not simply which number is larger: a peak reports the fastest speed reached on a pass, while a two-way average combines runs in opposite directions. SSC’s account of the 2022 result and its production plan appears in its May 2022 release.
What happened to the 2020 316.11 mph claim?
On October 10, 2020, SSC publicized a 316.11 mph two-way average claim. The result drew scrutiny, and the subsequent 2021 attempt produced the 282.9 mph average that became the later reported result. Car and Driver’s coverage describes the 2020 figure as disputed rather than a settled record. It should be treated as a historical claim, not as an established Tuatara speed record.

Does that make the Tuatara the fastest production car?
Not on the evidence of these figures alone. A claim about the fastest production car depends on the category being used, the record authority’s rules, and whether the run meets that authority’s certification requirements. SSC’s own page says the company holds the record, but a manufacturer’s assertion does not establish the car’s current standing across record authorities or settle the category definition. The available results do not establish a current, independently corroborated ranking across production-car categories.

In its 2022 release, SSC described a plan for 100 road-legal Tuatara hypercars and 25 additional non-road-legal variants. That is the production plan SSC stated at that time; it does not confirm how many cars have since been completed or delivered.
