Subaru’s S210 is the STI complete car that debuted as a prototype at Tokyo Auto Salon 2025. Its big omission for manual-transmission fans is clear: it uses Subaru’s Performance Transmission (SPT), a CVT with manual mode, not a conventional manual gearbox. It was based on the Japanese-market WRX S4 STI Sport R EX, so its unveiling was not the launch of a new global-market WRX STI.
What the S210 is—and what it is not
Subaru announced the S210 on January 10, 2025, describing it as a prototype developed from the WRX S4 STI Sport R EX, a Japanese-market model. The car was presented at Tokyo Auto Salon 2025, which ran January 10–12. Subaru said STI drew on experience from the Nürburgring 24-Hour Race in developing it. Subaru’s announcement and STI’s S210 model page identify it as an STI complete car, not a return of a mass-market WRX STI for all markets.
The distinction matters because the S210 announcement began as a prototype reveal, while STI’s later model page describes the car as limited to 500 units. Those statements establish the plan and stated limit, but the official English pages do not say how many were ultimately allocated or delivered.
The missing feature: a true manual transmission
The S210’s transmission is Subaru Performance Transmission, or SPT. STI specifies a CVT with manual mode, forward CVT and one reverse gear. The manual mode lets the driver select simulated ratios, but it does not turn the CVT into a conventional manual transmission with a clutch pedal and fixed gears. For enthusiasts whose definition of a proper STI requires that kind of gearbox, this is the S210’s central compromise.

Power and the S210’s other hardware
The S210 uses a turbocharged 2.4-liter FA24 horizontally opposed four-cylinder with direct injection and DOHC. Subaru’s January 2025 prototype release gave development targets of 221 kW (300 PS) at 5,700 rpm and 375 N·m (38.2 kgf·m) from 2,000 to 5,600 rpm. STI’s model page later lists output as 300 HP. These are differently worded official figures, not separate independent test results.

The equipment list makes the S210 more than a badge-and-power update: STI specifies changes across braking, suspension, aerodynamics and the cabin. The published details do not, by themselves, establish how those changes perform on the road or track.

How the 2026 STI prototype changes the context
Subaru’s later Tokyo Auto Salon 2026 page names a WRX STI Sport# Prototype and mentions a manual model. It is a separate prototype from the S210, not confirmation that the S210 has a manual option. The 2026 page does not provide a production timetable, final specifications or a market plan for the Sport#.

What buyers should not assume
The cited official pages do not establish the S210’s final transaction price, current resale or import availability, or final allocation and delivery totals. Its Japanese-market basis also means that its specification and stated limit should not be treated as a promise of availability in other countries. Factory-installed equipment is not evidence that parts are sold separately or fit other WRX models.
