Greenerwave and Plastic Omnium proposed using antennas and reconfigurable reflectors distributed across a vehicle’s bodywork to make a larger radar aperture for 4D imaging. The panel would help direct and receive radar waves; a separate radar chipset and algorithms would process the echoes. The companies announced the project in 2021, but the sources available do not establish whether its 2025 target was met or whether the system reached production.
What the companies proposed
Plastic Omnium announced an exclusive partnership with Greenerwave on September 6, 2021, to develop a new generation of 4D imaging radar. Greenerwave brought expertise in controlling electromagnetic waves, while Plastic Omnium brought automotive development, industrialization and body-panel integration capabilities. Plastic Omnium described Greenerwave as a spin-off from Institut Langevin. Plastic Omnium’s 2021 announcement
The idea is not that a bumper becomes a self-contained radar. Instead, bodywork can house and work with antennas and reflectors, while the radar electronics and software do the sensing and interpretation.
How can car body panels become intelligent surfaces?
Antennas spread across the bodywork
In Plastic Omnium’s CES 2023 description, a standard radar chipset connects to several antennas placed on vehicle bodywork. The chipset generates a wave and guides it to those antennas, which act as “smart” electromagnetic reflectors, directing the waves. Echoes from surrounding objects are collected by receiving antennas and analyzed by specialist algorithms to reconstruct the vehicle’s surroundings and categorize detected objects. Why spread antennas across a bumper?
The companies’ explanation is that conventional radar antennas are small and close to the radar chipset. Distributing larger antennas across a bumper could increase the radar aperture—the effective area used to transmit and receive waves—and the area that receives returning echoes. Plastic Omnium also said its expertise with plastics, material layers and paint could help make bumpers transparent to radar waves. These are descriptions of the proposed design, not independent test results.
What “4D imaging” means here
Plastic Omnium’s press kit uses “4D” to mean a three-dimensional picture of the surroundings plus speed information. The body panels help shape the radar’s antenna arrangement; the chipset and algorithms remain essential to generating and interpreting that information.

What Greenerwave says about the underlying technology
Greenerwave’s current radar page describes its system as using reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS), also called metamaterial antennas, with beamforming and beam steering. Its broader technology page describes RIS directed by physics-inspired algorithms, with relatively simple components and some complexity shifted from hardware to software. Those are vendor descriptions of its approach and benefits, not independent validation of this specific vehicle project.
Greenerwave’s radar page and technology overview describe the company’s current approach; neither establishes that the Greenerwave–Plastic Omnium body-panel system is in production.

What performance did Plastic Omnium claim?
Plastic Omnium’s 2021 announcement gave the proposed radar a target range of “up to 300 meters” and claimed “ten times higher” resolution than current radars. It offered distinguishing a pedestrian from a motorcyclist as an example of the intended object discrimination. These were company claims and development goals, not verified specifications or independently measured results. The sources available provide no neutral head-to-head test or validated performance data.
The same announcement expected first prototypes in 2022 and said the technology was intended to advance vehicle obstacle detection by 2025. Those dates describe the company’s plans at the time; they do not establish that prototypes appeared or that the target was achieved.

What is known about commercialization?
Plastic Omnium’s CES 2023 material continued to describe the collaboration and said the intended market included radar components or radar-equipped bumpers sold to automakers. Greenerwave’s current radar page lists automotive onboard radar among its markets. Neither source confirms that this particular partnership’s system was selected by an automaker or installed in a production vehicle.
Greenerwave’s press archive includes later announcements in other fields through July 2026, but does not confirm the automotive project’s production status. The available material therefore leaves open whether the 2025 target was met, whether an automaker chose the system, and whether a vehicle entered production with it. Greenerwave’s press archive

What the partnership could change—and what remains unproven
The proposed difference from a conventional arrangement is chiefly antenna placement and aperture: rather than keeping small antennas close to the chipset, the design would use bodywork to distribute antennas and reflectors over a wider area. That could support the companies’ aim of gathering more radar echoes and improving object discrimination. But the available sources do not provide a neutral performance comparison, so they cannot show how much the design improves range, resolution or real-world detection over conventional automotive radar.
Stéphane Noël, then President and CEO of Plastic Omnium Intelligent Exterior Systems, described the aim in the 2021 announcement: “Our partnership with Greenerwave aims to turn the entire bumper surface into a giant radar aperture, boosting ADAS systems performance.”
