Subaru Symmetrical AWD Explained: How It Differs From Other AWD Systems

Subaru’s Symmetrical AWD describes a centered boxer-engine drivetrain layout, not one universal AWD mechanism or torque split. Here’s how it compares with on-demand AWD and 4WD.

Subaru’s Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive (AWD) combines a centered drivetrain layout with systems Subaru generally describes as full-time AWD. “Symmetrical” refers to the layout—not to a single mechanism or a fixed torque split shared by every Subaru. The hardware and how power is distributed vary by model and transmission.

What does “symmetrical” mean?

Subaru Canada describes a horizontally opposed boxer engine and a longitudinal drivetrain whose engine, transmission and center differential are arranged along the vehicle’s centerline. Subaru says this layout supports side-to-side balance and a lower center of gravity. Those are the manufacturer’s design aims, not proof that every Subaru handles better than every competing vehicle. Subaru Canada’s Symmetrical AWD overview and Subaru of America’s explanation describe the system from their respective market perspectives.

The layout is only one part of AWD operation. Differentials, clutches and traction monitoring help determine how drive reaches the axles; “symmetrical” does not mean equal power is always sent to all four tires.

Does every Subaru use the same AWD system?

No. Subaru Canada identifies several full-time AWD implementations, with different hardware and torque distributions depending on transmission and model. Its published examples are specifications for the configurations it describes, not universal figures for every Subaru or model year.

System described by Subaru Canada Example hardware or application Published torque distribution
Viscous-coupling center differential AWD Described manual-transmission configuration 50/50 front/rear
Active Torque Split AWD Multi-plate transfer clutch 60/40 front/rear starting split
Variable Torque Distribution AWD WRX with SPT 45/55 front/rear under normal conditions
Driver Controlled Centre Differential (DCCD) AWD WRX STI example Driver-adjustable from 41/59 to 50/50 front/rear

These figures come from Subaru Canada’s system descriptions. They illustrate why there is no single torque split that represents all Subaru AWD systems. Subaru Canada sums up the rationale for offering different configurations this way: “The truth of the matter is, one size never fits all.” Before relying on a specification, check the exact vehicle’s year, market, trim and transmission.

How is Subaru AWD different from other AWD systems?

The broad distinction Subaru draws is between full-time and on-demand AWD. Subaru generally describes its AWD as continuously supplying some drive to both axles, with the system adjusting as traction conditions change. In Subaru’s description of on-demand AWD, a vehicle normally drives one axle and automatically connects the other when sensors detect a need. That is a useful general comparison, not a rule that covers every vehicle sold by every manufacturer. Subaru of America’s AWD overview explains these categories.

For a concrete comparison, look beyond the badge or marketing term. Check whether both axles receive drive continuously or on demand, what center differential or clutch arrangement is used, the default torque bias and how it can change, and whether the driver can select modes. Subaru’s systems vary along these dimensions, too.

How is AWD different from 4WD?

In Subaru’s consumer-level comparison, AWD automatically varies torque between axles, while many 4WD systems offer selectable high and low ranges and may lock differentials. The terms are not perfectly uniform across the industry, and individual vehicles can depart from this simplified distinction. Subaru of America’s AWD-versus-4WD overview provides its explanation.

What does Subaru AWD mean for winter driving?

AWD describes how drive is delivered; it does not make tire choice irrelevant. Subaru says AWD and 4WD vehicles should use snow tires for best winter performance. If you’re buying winter tires for your Subaru, confirm the exact tire size and fitment for your vehicle. Subaru’s overview covers its winter-tire guidance.

How to compare a Subaru with another AWD vehicle

  • Compare the exact model year, market, trim and transmission; AWD specifications can differ across them.
  • Find out whether the system drives both axles continuously or connects one axle on demand.
  • Check the center-differential or clutch design, stated torque bias and how the distribution can change.
  • Account for driver-selectable modes, tires, ground clearance and the conditions in which you plan to drive.

Subaru’s manufacturer explanations describe design and operation; they are not independent head-to-head tests. The word “symmetrical” alone does not establish a measurable advantage in grip, safety or handling over a specific rival.
