The safest Outback setup is the one you complete before moving: confirm the correct model-year manual, configure DriverFocus if your trim supports it, pair your phone while parked, and learn which screen controls are intentionally disabled on the road. Subaru’s menu labels and equipment vary by year and trim, so use the 2021 route below only as a guide for a 2021-style system—not as a universal path.
Start with the safety rule: configure the system while parked
Subaru’s Multimedia System Owner’s Manual gives a direct instruction: “For safety, the driver should not operate the system while he/she is driving.” The same manual explains that safety restrictions can make some functions inoperable while the vehicle is moving and that unavailable on-screen buttons may appear dimmed.

Make every change with the vehicle stopped in a safe location, the transmission in Park and your attention off the road. If a button is dimmed after you start driving, treat that as a deliberate safety restriction rather than a fault to work around. Finish pairing, profile setup, destination entry and preference changes before pulling away.

Verify your Outback’s year and trim before following a menu path
Infotainment hardware, menu names and DriverFocus availability are model-year and trim sensitive. Subaru’s Owner’s Information Portal lets you select a vehicle or look it up by VIN so you can open the matching owner’s information and manual. If the wording on your screen does not match the instructions below, stop and check the manual for your exact vehicle instead of assuming a feature is missing.

Turn on and personalize DriverFocus where supported
DriverFocus is Subaru’s driver-monitoring system. Subaru describes the 2026 version as able to issue distraction or drowsiness alerts, recognize up to five drivers and restore saved preferences. Those functions are aids to attention, not autonomous driving and not a reason to look away from traffic.
The verified 2021 route
- Park safely and switch on the vehicle so the infotainment system is available.
- From the Home Screen, select Settings.
- Select Car.
- Select Driver Monitoring System.
- Use the available controls to switch the system on or off and adjust its settings.
This sequence is verified in the 2021 Outback guide. A later or earlier Outback may place the same controls under a different heading, use different wording or omit them on a trim without the system.
Set up recognition without overestimating what it saves
On a supported vehicle, complete the on-screen enrollment or personalization steps while parked. DriverFocus can recognize up to five drivers in the 2026 description and can use recognition to apply saved preferences. The cited material confirms preference recognition, but it does not promise that every infotainment setting is stored in every profile. Check the prompts and your vehicle’s manual to see which preferences your car actually associates with a driver.

Use alerts as a prompt, not a permission slip
A distraction or drowsiness alert is a reminder to re-engage with driving. It is not a medical assessment, a guarantee that every lapse will be detected or a substitute for rest. Keep your eyes on the road, follow posted restrictions and stop in a safe place if you need to change a setting or address fatigue.
Pair your phone before the trip and minimize screen touches
For 2026, Subaru lists wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard across Outback trims. Once paired, the vehicle system can provide access to navigation, music, podcasts and compatible apps without requiring the phone to be handled. Older Outbacks may use a different connection method or menu, so follow the instructions for that model year.

Understand what the screen will—and will not—let you do while moving
The multimedia manual’s dimmed-button behavior is useful feedback. When a control is unavailable, the system is enforcing a driving restriction. Common examples include functions that require extended reading, typing or menu navigation. The exact list can differ by vehicle and software version.
- Before departure: enter destinations, choose audio sources, confirm a phone and review DriverFocus preferences.
- During the drive: use permitted steering-wheel buttons, voice controls and simple screen actions only when the manual allows them.
- If a control is dimmed: wait until you are parked; do not interpret the visual state as an intermittent touchscreen problem.

What to do when the instructions do not match your screen
The Driver Monitoring System menu is absent
First verify the year and trim in the owner’s information portal. Subaru’s stated support applicability covers 2020-and-newer Outback Limited and Touring trims, not every Outback configuration. If your vehicle is outside that description, the system may not be fitted. If it is within the description but the menu still differs, use the manual for that VIN and look for an alternate label such as DriverFocus or driver monitoring.
The screen layout looks different from the 2021 guide
That is expected when hardware or software has changed. Do not infer a fault from a different home-screen arrangement. The 2026 Outback’s 12.1-inch display is a separate model-year specification, so a 2026 menu should not be expected to mirror the 2021 guide. Follow the current manual’s exact path.
A button is unavailable after you start driving
Check whether the button is dimmed. The multimedia manual says driving restrictions can make functions unavailable. Park safely, then complete the operation. If a control remains unavailable while parked, consult the vehicle-specific manual or Subaru support rather than repeatedly pressing it on the road.

Phone projection does not behave as expected
Confirm that you are following the connection instructions for your model year, that the intended phone is selected and that pairing was completed while parked. The 2026 wireless standard does not establish the same behavior for older Outbacks. If the menus or prompts differ, use the matching manual instead of assuming a missing option is a system failure.
Keep the driver’s attention as the final setting
Infotainment configuration can remove unnecessary tasks from a trip, but it cannot remove the driver’s responsibility. DriverFocus alerts, saved preferences, wireless phone integration and screen lockouts are convenience and assistance features. They do not replace visual attention, sensible speed, rest or a safe place to stop.
Before each departure, verify that the intended driver profile and phone are active, the first route and audio source are ready, and no setup remains. If you need to type, browse, change a complicated preference or investigate a mismatch, pull over and do it there.
