There is no reliable, apples-to-apples ranking of every Subaru Outback generation in the available evidence. Consumer Reports offers survey-based reliability information for recent model years, while CarComplaints publishes a separate complaint-derived ranking for selected year groups. Neither establishes a definitive winner across all generations. For a buyer, the exact model year, engine, transmission, maintenance history, condition and VIN-specific recall status matter more than a generation label.
Why there is no definitive all-generation ranking
The sources measure different things. Consumer Reports’ annual reliability history reflects problems reported by surveyed owners; its 2025 Outback page gives a predicted reliability score. CarComplaints compares complaint reports through its own PainRank system. Complaint counts are not failure rates, and they are not adjusted here for how many vehicles are on the road or how long each model year has been in service. A newer Outback may have fewer reports simply because it has had less time to accumulate them.
Consumer Reports says its annual auto surveys include data on around 420,000 vehicles, according to its 2023 description. That is the overall survey scale, not the number of Outbacks surveyed or proof that each generation has a similarly sized sample. Its 2024 Outback material shows annual reliability history for model years 2015–2024, with variation by year; the 2025 model page reports predicted reliability of 61/100 and survey history for 2017–2024. These are useful recent-model-year signals, not a full comparison of every Outback generation.
Subaru also says that 96% of Outbacks sold in the last 10 years are still on the road. The manufacturer’s surfaced page does not state a publication year for that claim. It is not a generation-by-generation comparison, a failure rate or an independent assessment of vehicle condition.

What the generation evidence does—and does not—show
The ranges below are CarComplaints’ groupings, not a claim that every source uses the same generation boundaries. The table keeps its complaint-based findings separate from Consumer Reports’ model-year survey information.
| CarComplaints model-year group | Evidence and supported pattern | What to verify on a specific Outback |
|---|---|---|
| 1995–1999 | CarComplaints includes this group in its model-year categories; a specific comparative reliability result is not stated in the available CarComplaints material. | Confirm the vehicle’s exact year, drivetrain and service history, then assess its current condition. |
| 2000–2003 | CarComplaints includes this group in its model-year categories; a specific comparative reliability result is not stated in the available CarComplaints material. | Check records and condition for the individual vehicle rather than treating its group as a verdict. |
| 2004–2009 | CarComplaints includes this group in its model-year categories; a specific comparative reliability result is not stated in the available CarComplaints material. | Identify the exact model year and configuration and review its maintenance documentation. |
| 2010–2014 | CarComplaints labels this group poorly in its complaint-derived PainRank comparison. This is a secondary aggregator’s ranking, not an official Subaru assessment or a controlled reliability study. | Review the service history and have the vehicle inspected; the group label does not establish the condition of an individual car. |
| 2015–2019 | CarComplaints also labels this group poorly in its PainRank comparison. Separately, Consumer Reports’ 2024 material shows annual reliability history for 2015–2024, with differences among model years; it does not supply a single rating for this whole group. | Look up the exact model year’s available survey signal and weigh it alongside the car’s records and inspection. |
| 2020–2021 | CarComplaints’ listed group ends at 2021. Consumer Reports’ 2024 material covers annual history through 2024, and its 2025 model page gives a predicted reliability score for the 2025 model; neither establishes one rating for this two-year group. | Use information for the exact model year and configuration; do not infer a group-wide result from a newer model’s score. |
Because the measures and coverage differ, the two groups CarComplaints labels poorly cannot be directly ranked against one another—or against groups without a stated result—to produce an all-generation order. The Consumer Reports figures do not fill that gap: they concern recent model years, and a predicted score for one model year is not a generation-wide verdict.

How to choose between used Outbacks
- Pin down the configuration. Confirm the model year, engine and transmission. A generation name can cover materially different drivetrains, so compare like with like.
- Evaluate the actual car. Review maintenance records and arrange an inspection. The generation-level material does not establish that every vehicle in a group shares the same history or condition.
- Check recalls by VIN. Use Subaru’s recall tool or NHTSA’s recall lookup with the vehicle’s full 17-character VIN. Subaru says recall information is vehicle-specific; a model-year search alone cannot confirm the status of the car you are considering.
- Match reference material to the vehicle. Subaru’s owner resources provide model-year-specific manuals and vehicle information. Use the Outback owner’s manual for the exact model year rather than relying on a manual for a different year.
Are there Subaru Outback years to avoid?
“Years to avoid” is a search phrase and a CarComplaints heading, not evidence that a particular Outback year should be universally avoided. The complaint-derived labels for 2010–2014 and 2015–2019 are worth treating as prompts for closer investigation, not as proof that every vehicle in either range is unreliable. Conversely, the absence of a stated poor label for another group does not establish that it is trouble-free.
For any candidate, weigh the exact year’s available survey information, configuration, documented maintenance, inspection findings and VIN recall results. That approach is more defensible than choosing by generation rank alone.
