The final Subaru Legacy rolled off the line at Subaru of Indiana Automotive in Lafayette, Indiana, shortly after 3 p.m. ET on September 12, 2025. It was a 2025 Legacy Limited finished in Magnetite Gray. Subaru says the plant had built the model there since September 11, 1989, ending a production run the company describes as 36 years.
What was the final Subaru Legacy?
Subaru of Indiana Automotive (SIA) identified the last car as a Legacy Limited in Magnetite Gray. A Subaru of Indiana Automotive announcement says it left the assembly line shortly after 3 p.m. ET on September 12, 2025. Subaru of America’s 2025 Legacy window sticker lists Lafayette, Indiana, as the car’s final assembly point.
The date of the final car is distinct from Subaru’s earlier designation of 2025 as the Legacy’s last model year: the production line continued into September 2025 before the final vehicle was assembled.
When did Indiana Legacy production begin?
SIA’s company history dates the start of Legacy production in Lafayette to September 11, 1989. The beginning and end dates are nearly 36 years apart; SIA describes the Indiana production run as 36 years. The Legacy was the plant’s longest-running Subaru model line, according to the company.

Why did Subaru end Legacy production?
Subaru attributed the decision to changing demand, with the market shifting from passenger cars toward SUVs and crossovers, as well as the company’s move toward electrified and fully electric vehicles. That is Subaru’s stated explanation; the company’s announcement does not quantify how much each factor contributed.
What does the end mean for the Lafayette plant?
The Legacy’s end does not mean SIA stopped building vehicles. The plant’s current lineup page lists the Ascent, Crosstrek, and Forester as its North American production models. Its history also records past production of the Outback, Impreza, Baja, and Tribeca, among other vehicles.

In an August 2022 release, SIA said it produced about half of all Subaru vehicles sold in North America at that time. That figure is a dated company statement, not a verified current share. The available company information does not quantify how Legacy production capacity was reassigned after the line ended.

The end of production is a milestone for new-car manufacturing, not evidence that existing Legacy vehicles or their parts have disappeared. Owners seeking maintenance or replacement parts should check fitment by model year and vehicle configuration, and confirm current availability with a dealer or parts seller. The available sources do not establish current dealer inventory for the final 2025 model.
