The U.S. timeline has seven generations, ending with the 2025 Legacy—the model’s final year in the United States.
Subaru Legacy generations by U.S. model year
These are the commonly used North American generation ranges, expressed as U.S. model years. Subaru’s historical sources confirm the Legacy’s early launch and selected milestones, but do not publish one consolidated official chart of all seven ranges. Dates and generation labels can differ in other markets.
| Generation | U.S. model years |
|---|---|
| First | 1990–1994 |
| Second | 1995–1999 |
| Third | 2000–2004 |
| Fourth | 2005–2009 |
| Fifth | 2010–2014 |
| Sixth | 2015–2019 |
| Seventh | 2020–2025 |
When did the Subaru Legacy first come out?
Subaru’s corporate chronology dates production start to November 1988, the Japanese introduction to February 1989, and the U.S. introduction to April 1989. Subaru described the first-generation Legacy as developed to succeed the Leone. The 1989 introduction date and the 1990 start of the commonly used U.S. model-year chart refer to different things, not a contradiction. Subaru Corporation’s 2005 chronology records the model’s launch milestones.
What was the last year of the Subaru Legacy?
The 2025 model year was the last for the Legacy in the United States. Subaru’s 2025 brochure provides final-year U.S. specifications, and a Consumer Reports road-test summary reprinted on Subaru’s site identifies 2025 as the final year. Read the Subaru-hosted road-test reprint.

Some late-generation milestones help orient buyers, but they do not describe every model year or market. A Consumer Reports road-test summary reprinted by Subaru says the 2020 Legacy was redesigned and its optional 2.4-liter turbo replaced the previous six-cylinder option. The same summary notes steering-responsive headlights became standard across trims for 2021, mild styling updates and Automatic Emergency Steering arrived for 2023, and 2024 was mostly unchanged. These are details from that reprinted road-test summary, not a complete specification history.
2025 U.S. trims and engines
For the final U.S. model year, Subaru listed five trims. Legacy, Premium, and Limited used a 2.5-liter naturally aspirated boxer four-cylinder rated at 182 hp; Sport and Touring XT used a 2.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder rated at 260 hp. Subaru listed Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive as standard. These figures apply to 2025 U.S. models, not to every Legacy generation. See Subaru’s 2025 Legacy brochure.
How to identify a Legacy generation—and check parts fit
Start with the car’s market and model year; do not assume an international launch date or generation label maps directly to a U.S. model year. For a specific vehicle, confirm the year, trim, engine, and part number before ordering components. Generation alone is not enough to establish compatibility.
Subaru’s catalog, for example, lists coolant hose part 99083AA440 for 2020–2025 Legacy applications. That fitment applies to that catalog item only; it does not mean every part fits all five model years. Check Subaru’s parts catalog listing. Subaru’s owner information portal provides manuals, though documentation may not be listed for every model or year.

What does “generation” mean across markets?
The ranges above are a U.S.-market model-year timeline, not a universal calendar. Regional launch dates, model-year conventions, body styles, and the timing of updates can differ. Subaru’s chronology, for instance, dates a second-generation wagon milestone to September 1993; that Japanese milestone should not be treated as the beginning of the U.S. 1995 model-year generation.
