What physical controls are returning in the 2026 Outback?
In the previous Outback generation, many HVAC and other functions were placed on a portrait-oriented touchscreen. For 2026, Subaru shifts the display to landscape orientation and brings climate controls back to hardware below the screen. The company describes the climate setup as dedicated hard buttons and knobs. Subaru’s 2026 Outback page and its 2026 Outback reveal release describe the change.
X-MODE, Subaru’s drive-mode system, also moves out of touchscreen submenus: it now has a dedicated button on the steering wheel. That means the controls Subaru has specifically confirmed returning are climate functions and X-MODE access, not every function previously handled through the screen.
Do the screens remain?
Yes. Physical controls supplement the displays rather than replace them. Subaru lists a standard 12.1-inch infotainment touchscreen and a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster for the gas-powered 2026 Outback. Infotainment and navigation remain screen-based features. Why did Subaru change the layout?
Subaru says it responded to feedback about the previous infotainment system. In its reveal release, the company says moving climate functions to separate hard buttons makes them easier to use in cold weather while wearing gloves. That is Subaru’s stated usability rationale; the cited materials do not establish a measured safety improvement or quantify customer demand.
Is Subaru bringing knobs and buttons back across its whole lineup?
The confirmed change is for the 2026 Outback. Other Subaru models retain different mixes of physical and touchscreen controls, so it would be inaccurate to describe this as a company-wide return.

2026 Forester
Consumer Reports’ 2026 Forester model excerpt describes physical volume and tuning knobs, along with physical driver- and passenger-temperature and defrost buttons. Most climate functions remain on the touchscreen. Consumer Reports’ 2026 Forester overview shows a mixed arrangement rather than the Outback’s specific layout.
2026 Crosstrek in Australia
Subaru Australia describes temperature and demister buttons beside the touchscreen in the 2026 Crosstrek, while other controls remain digital. This is a separate market and model; its control layout should not be assumed to match U.S. vehicles. See Subaru Australia’s Crosstrek interior page.

What to check when comparing Subaru interiors
Touchscreen size alone does not tell you how easy a vehicle’s controls will be to use. When comparing models or trims, check the functions you use most:
- Which frequent tasks have dedicated buttons or knobs?
- Which controls stay visible, and which require opening a screen menu?
- Are temperature and defrost controls physical, on-screen, or split between the two?
- Does the layout keep audio, navigation, and other infotainment functions on a touchscreen?
Those differences describe the control layout; the available evidence does not establish that one arrangement is objectively safer. Model-year equipment can also vary by trim, market, and production timing, so confirm the specific vehicle’s features with its market’s official model information.
