“Subaru Forester recalled” can refer to several separate U.S. safety campaigns, not one defect affecting every Forester. Check your vehicle’s 17-character VIN or license plate in NHTSA’s recall lookup to see whether it has an open recall; a model-year search alone cannot confirm that your car is affected.
Recent Subaru Forester recalls
The campaigns below were identified in U.S. NHTSA and Subaru materials reviewed through October 9, 2026. They cover specific vehicles and are not a complete historical list of every Forester recall. A campaign’s population count is not a count of vehicles known to have failed, and it does not establish whether a particular vehicle is included.

| Campaign | Vehicles described | Issue and risk | Remedy and owner guidance |
|---|---|---|---|
| 26V346 / Subaru WRF-26R | Certain 2026 Foresters equipped with a power moonroof. Subaru of America reported 69,663 U.S. vehicles in its 2026 bulletin, revised May 29, 2026. | The moonroof glass may be improperly bonded to its sliding frame. Adhesion can deteriorate, allowing the glass to detach while the vehicle is in use and creating crash or injury risks. | A dealer inspects the glass adhesion and replaces the assembly if needed, at no cost. Not every vehicle in the production range is affected; confirm coverage through Subaru’s Vehicle Coverage Inquiry. |
| 25V889 / Subaru WRG-25 | Certain 2026 Foresters. NHTSA’s January 6, 2026 letter identifies 5,603 potentially affected vehicles. | An incorrect or incorrectly oriented rear-hatch support bracket may detach without warning, allowing the hatch to fall and increasing the risk of injury. | A dealer inspects the stay and support bracket and replaces them if necessary, without charge. |
| 26V106 / Subaru WRD-26 | 2025 Forester Hybrid vehicles. NHTSA’s February 26, 2026 report identifies 51,707 Foresters; its 69,153 total covers both the 2025 Forester Hybrid and 2026 Crosstrek Hybrid. | When a vehicle is parked with a near-full tank and the ambient temperature rises, fuel may expand. An insufficient fuel-filler-cap seal may allow fuel to leak from the filler neck, creating a fire risk if it reaches an ignition source. | Until the remedy is completed, Subaru’s interim instruction was to park outside and keep the fuel level at or below 50%. A dealer replaces the gasket with an improved version at no cost. |
| WRB-25 | Certain 2025 Forester Limited vehicles with 18-inch aluminum alloy wheels. Subaru of America’s January 24, 2025 retailer notice reports 20,366 U.S. vehicles. | The lug-seat surface on a wheel may be incorrectly specified, potentially affecting vehicle stability and increasing crash risk. | A retailer inspects all four wheels and replaces any affected wheel. Not all vehicles within the production date range are affected; coverage must be confirmed. |
Do not add the campaign counts to estimate a unique total: the campaigns involve different populations, and the cited documents do not provide a deduplicated count.
How to check whether your Forester has an open recall
- Find the VIN. It is a 17-character identifier, commonly visible at the lower left of the windshield or on vehicle registration and insurance documents.
- Search the specific vehicle. Enter the VIN or license plate in NHTSA’s official recall lookup. Searching by year, make and model gives general recall information; it does not determine your vehicle’s repair status.
- Read the result for your vehicle. Check whether an unrepaired recall is listed, then follow the instructions for that campaign. If one applies, contact a Subaru dealer to arrange the remedy.
- Recheck when appropriate. NHTSA says vehicle identification numbers may be added continuously for recently announced recalls. If you received a notice or believe a new campaign may apply but your search shows none, check again and contact Subaru or a dealer.
A result showing no unrepaired recall is not proof that a past repair was performed: NHTSA’s lookup does not show recalls already repaired as unrepaired. Keep repair records if you need to verify completed work.

What to do if your vehicle is affected
Follow the interim instructions for the specific campaign while arranging service. Precautions differ by defect; for example, the 50%-or-less fuel guidance applies to the cited 2025 Forester Hybrid fuel-cap campaign, not to every Forester recall. For an open recall, contact a Subaru dealer about the manufacturer’s remedy. NHTSA advises owners to contact a local dealership for a free recall repair.
If you are unsure whether a notice applies, give the dealer your VIN and ask them to check campaign coverage. For the moonroof and wheel campaigns described above, the documents explicitly caution that not every vehicle within the relevant production population is affected.

Do Subaru recalls expire?
NHTSA’s recall FAQ states: “Once a vehicle has been recalled, that recall never expires.” The practical next step is still to check your individual vehicle and arrange any applicable unrepaired remedy with a Subaru dealer.
