There is no universal Subaru EyeSight reset button that clears every warning. In most cases, a white EyeSight warning means the camera system has temporarily stopped because it cannot see clearly or is outside its temperature range. Cleaning and defogging the windshield, waiting for conditions to improve, and restarting the vehicle once may restore it automatically. A yellow EyeSight warning, especially “EyeSight Off Check Manual,” indicates a malfunction; restart the vehicle once in a safe place, but arrange an inspection if the warning remains.
Until the warning disappears and EyeSight shows normal operation, assume that adaptive cruise control, lane assistance, pre-collision braking, and other EyeSight-dependent features are unavailable.
First, check whether the EyeSight warning is white or yellow
The indicator color and exact message are more useful than the general complaint that “EyeSight is not working.” Subaru’s manuals distinguish a temporary stop from a malfunction.
| Dashboard condition | What it usually means | What to do first |
|---|---|---|
| White EyeSight temporary-stop indicator | The cameras or vehicle systems cannot operate temporarily. Common causes include a fogged windshield, poor weather, strong sunlight, or extreme temperature. | Clear the windshield, improve the conditions, and wait for EyeSight to restart automatically. |
| Yellow EyeSight warning or “EyeSight Off Check Manual” | EyeSight has detected a malfunction. Its functions are stopped. | Stop safely, switch off the engine, restart once, and arrange service if the warning remains. |
| No EyeSight warning, but one feature is unavailable | A feature may have been manually disabled or may have a separate operating condition. | Check the model-specific driving-assistance settings and owner’s manual. |
Current Subaru EyeSight manuals identify white temporary-stop messages including “EyeSight Disabled No Camera View,” “EyeSight Disabled Temp Range,” and “EyeSight Disabled Check Manual.” A yellow warning is treated differently: Subaru instructs the driver to restart the vehicle and contact a Subaru retailer if the warning remains. See the current Crosstrek EyeSight manual’s temporary-stop guidance and Subaru’s owner-manual warning procedure.

How to reset Subaru EyeSight safely
Think of the following as a recovery sequence, not a guaranteed repair. It can restore EyeSight after a temporary visibility, temperature, or transient vehicle-state problem, but it cannot correct a misaligned camera, damaged wiring, distorted windshield, or stored hardware fault.
- Pull over safely. Do not troubleshoot, clean the glass, or navigate menus while driving. Select Park and apply the parking brake as appropriate.
- Record the exact message and color. Take a photograph if possible. Note whether the indicator is steady or flashing and whether the check-engine, brake, steering, Vehicle Dynamics Control, RAB, or other warning lights are also on.
- Note what happened immediately beforehand. Record the weather, temperature, sun angle, windshield condition, recent jump-start, battery replacement, windshield work, collision repair, wheel work, or modification.
- Perform one normal power cycle. Turn off the engine, wait briefly, and restart the vehicle. For a yellow warning, this is Subaru’s documented owner-level recovery step. If the yellow warning remains, do not keep cycling the ignition in the hope that the fault will disappear.
- Check the camera view. Remove exterior dirt, snow, ice, water film, or road spray. Defog the inside of the windshield and inspect for oily film, streaks, cracks, scratches, stickers, toll tags, or accessories near the stereo cameras.
- Allow the system to recover. For a camera-visibility warning, wait until the glass and road view are clear. For a temperature warning, allow the camera and cabin area to return to a moderate operating temperature. EyeSight may restart automatically after you drive for a while in improved conditions.
- Confirm normal operation before relying on it. The warning should disappear and the relevant EyeSight indicators should show normal operation. Do not intentionally test automatic emergency braking or lane keeping.
If the warning returns immediately, remains after conditions are normal, or appears with other vehicle-system warnings, treat it as a diagnostic problem rather than a reset problem.
What the common EyeSight messages mean
“EyeSight Disabled No Camera View”
This normally means the stereo cameras cannot obtain a sufficiently clear view. Possible causes include:
- Rain, snow, fog, dust, spray, or other poor visibility.
- Snow, ice, dirt, or water on the outside of the windshield.
- Fogging, oily film, or persistent condensation on the inside.
- Low sun directly ahead or bright headlights from oncoming traffic.
- Worn windshield wipers that leave streaks.
- A dashcam, toll transponder, sticker, phone mount, or other object in the camera’s view.
- Windshield film, glass coating, scratches, cracks, or optical distortion.
Clean the glass carefully, defog it, replace severely streaking wipers, and wait for visibility to improve. Subaru says the system may restart automatically after conditions improve and the vehicle has been driven for a period of time. If the message persists with a clean windshield in ordinary conditions, schedule an inspection. The EyeSight manual’s temporary-stop explanation covers these conditions.

This indicates that the camera or surrounding vehicle interior is too hot or too cold for normal operation. Park in a more moderate environment if possible and allow the cabin and windshield area to warm or cool naturally. Do not try to heat the camera module with a heat gun, hair dryer, or other concentrated source.
EyeSight should restart once the temperature returns to its operating range. If it does not recover after the vehicle has returned to a normal temperature, contact a Subaru retailer or qualified ADAS repair facility. See the manual’s temperature and temporary-stop guidance.
“EyeSight Disabled Check Manual”
This message can be associated with more than a camera obstruction. Depending on the model year and EyeSight version, Subaru manuals list possible vehicle-state conditions such as:
- EyeSight is still starting up.
- The vehicle is on an extreme incline.
- Pre-Collision secondary braking has operated three times after startup.
- The engine stopped for a reason other than normal Auto Start Stop operation.
- Electric power-steering overheat protection was activated after steering while stationary or moving extremely slowly.
- Wheel removal or installation, wheel imbalance, or wheel misalignment on applicable model years.
Some of these conditions clear after the underlying situation is resolved. If EyeSight does not restart after sufficient time in normal conditions, Subaru advises contacting a dealer. The exact causes vary by model and year; the 2022 Outback EyeSight manual is an example of the model-specific guidance.

“EyeSight Off Check Manual”
This is a malfunction warning, not simply a notice that the cameras cannot see through temporary weather. Turn off and restart the engine once in a safe location. If the yellow warning remains illuminated or flashes, EyeSight functions are stopped and the vehicle should be inspected.
Clean the windshield—but do not handle the camera module
The stereo cameras look through the upper-central portion of the windshield. A clean windshield does not necessarily mean the camera view is clear: inside-glass fogging, oily residue, scratches, glass coatings, and optical distortion can all matter.
Use the wipers and an appropriate glass-cleaning method on the windshield itself. Do not spray cleaner directly into the camera housing, pry on the camera assembly, loosen its mounting, or attempt to reposition it. Subaru warns that glass films, coatings, additional layers, cracks, and other changes can interfere with EyeSight operation; see the applicable Subaru EyeSight owner-manual warnings.
Subaru’s guidance also recommends keeping dashcams and toll devices out of the central camera area. Place them in one of the windshield’s four corners rather than directly in front of the cameras, as described in this Subaru windshield-accessory guidance.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Does the touchscreen have an EyeSight reset?
Not a universal fault-clearing reset. Some Subaru models let the driver turn individual features on or off or change their behavior through the multimedia system. For example, the 2024 Legacy and Outback use a path similar to:
- Touch HOME.
- Open Settings.
- Select Car.
- Choose the applicable EyeSight or driving-assistance menu.
Available settings can include Pre-Collision Braking, lane-departure functions, cruise-control acceleration behavior, warning volume, Lead Vehicle Acquisition Sound, and Lead Vehicle Moving Monitor. Labels and menu paths vary by model year, trim, infotainment system, and EyeSight version. The 2024 Legacy/Outback EyeSight settings reference is not a universal procedure for every Subaru.
Changing a setting can restore a feature that was manually disabled, but it does not repair a persistent yellow warning or recalibrate a camera. Do not confuse an EyeSight setting with DriverFocus: DriverFocus is a separate driver-monitoring and distraction-mitigation system available on some Subarus. Turning DriverFocus or User Recognition off is not a repair for the forward-facing EyeSight camera system.
Should you disconnect the battery or pull an EyeSight fuse?
No—not as a normal first-line reset. Battery disconnection or fuse removal may fail to clear the underlying fault, create additional warnings, erase unrelated vehicle settings, or complicate diagnosis. Low battery voltage can itself be the cause of an EyeSight problem, so disconnecting the battery may remove useful diagnostic evidence without fixing the electrical issue.

Subaru service information for applicable vehicles directs technicians to check EyeSight ECU supply voltage and, when appropriate, repair or recharge the battery and clear EyeSight memory with the Subaru Select Monitor. One procedure identifies supply voltage below 10 volts as a condition requiring voltage investigation; that threshold belongs to the applicable service procedure and should not be treated as a universal dashboard reset rule for every model year. See the Subaru battery-voltage and EyeSight diagnostic bulletin.
If the problem began after a dead battery, jump-start, repeated hard starting, battery replacement, or installation of electrical accessories, ask for:
- A battery and charging-system test.
- Inspection of grounds and supply voltage.
- A scan of all relevant vehicle modules.
- EyeSight-specific fault-code retrieval and memory clearing when required.
A generic OBD scanner may not access all EyeSight information. “No codes” on a basic scanner is not proof that the camera system is healthy.
Windshield replacement usually requires EyeSight calibration
A windshield replacement is one of the most important clues when EyeSight remains disabled. A new windshield can be clear to the driver but still unsuitable for the cameras because of optical distortion, incorrect glass specification, camera-mounting differences, or incomplete calibration.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Subaru of America strongly recommends genuine Subaru windshield glass specially designed for EyeSight and states that the stereo camera must be inspected, adjusted, and automatically calibrated after windshield replacement. Subaru service guidance says that if automatic adjustment does not complete after 30 minutes of driving, the procedure must be repeated. The vehicle should not be returned to the customer until the required camera procedures complete successfully. See Subaru’s EyeSight windshield position statement and the windshield-replacement calibration bulletin.
Before approving windshield work, ask the glass shop:
- Is the replacement glass specified for this exact Subaru model and year?
- Will EyeSight camera inspection and calibration be performed after installation?
- Will the shop provide documentation that calibration completed successfully?
- If calibration fails, who handles diagnosis, replacement glass, or dealer inspection?
An aftermarket windshield is not automatically guaranteed to fail, but Subaru warns that non-approved glass may distort the camera view or obstruct visibility. A menu reset cannot correct distorted glass, a damaged camera bracket, incorrect mounting, or failed calibration.

- Collision or body repair near the windshield, roof, hood, front structure, or camera mounting area.
- Windshield replacement, glass film, coatings, stickers, or added layers.
- Dashcams, toll tags, phone mounts, or other objects near the camera field of view.
- Suspension changes, unusual ride height, nonstandard tire sizes, or temporary tire-repair equipment.
- Wheel removal, wheel imbalance, or alignment work on model years where Subaru lists those conditions.
- Battery failure, jump-starting, charging problems, or electrical accessory installation.
Subaru manuals and service information warn that changes affecting camera visibility or alignment can impair EyeSight. Related conditions can also involve steering, engine, stability-control, communication, or other vehicle systems. A clear windshield therefore rules out only some possible causes.
Can you drive with EyeSight disabled?
Often, the vehicle may still be driven normally, but the driver must operate it without EyeSight assistance. A persistent yellow warning means EyeSight functions are stopped. Depending on the model and equipment, this can include:
- Adaptive cruise control or other EyeSight cruise functions.
- Pre-Collision Braking.
- Lane-departure warning or lane-keeping functions.
- Reverse Automatic Braking.
- Blind-Spot Detection and Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, on vehicles where those systems are affected by the fault.
Some models may retain conventional cruise-control operation even while EyeSight is unavailable. That does not mean the stereo-camera safety system is active. The Outback EyeSight manual explains that available functions can differ during a temporary stop.
Do not rely on adaptive cruise, lane assistance, automatic braking, RAB, or other affected features until the warning clears and normal operation is confirmed. If the warning appears together with a brake-system, steering, engine, or Vehicle Dynamics Control warning—or if braking or steering feels abnormal—pull over safely and seek urgent service rather than continuing to troubleshoot.
Decision tree: what to do in each situation
White warning with a dirty, wet, fogged, snowy, or iced windshield
- Clean and defog the windshield.
- Replace wipers that leave heavy streaks.
- Wait for weather and temperature to improve.
- Drive for a while in clear conditions.
- If EyeSight returns, a dealer reset is generally not needed.
White warning remains after clear weather and normal temperature
- Restart once in a safe place.
- Check for inside-glass contamination and windshield accessories.
- Consider recent windshield, collision, wheel, suspension, or battery work.
- Schedule inspection if the system does not recover.
Yellow warning remains after the restart
- Treat it as a malfunction.
- Do not rely on any EyeSight-dependent feature.
- Arrange Subaru or qualified ADAS-capable diagnostic service.
- Ask for stored EyeSight codes, camera-alignment status, battery-voltage history, and calibration status.
The warning began after windshield replacement
- Return to the installer or contact a Subaru retailer.
- Confirm the glass specification for the exact vehicle.
- Request documented EyeSight camera inspection and calibration.
- Do not accept “the glass is clear, so calibration is unnecessary.”
The warning began after a dead battery or jump-start
- Test the battery and charging system.
- Scan the relevant modules with Subaru-capable equipment.
- Do not assume a generic code clear or battery disconnect repaired EyeSight.
Only one feature is unavailable and no EyeSight warning is displayed
Check whether that feature was manually disabled or has a separate operating limitation. Pre-Collision Braking, lane functions, warning volume, cruise behavior, and other settings can be controlled separately on some models. Restoring one setting does not reset the camera system.
When to see a Subaru dealer or ADAS specialist
Arrange professional diagnosis when:
- A yellow EyeSight warning remains after one normal restart.
- A white warning remains after clear weather, a clear windshield, and normal temperature.
- The warning began after windshield replacement or camera-area repair.
- The vehicle was involved in a collision or body repair.
- Several unrelated warning lights appeared at the same time.
- The battery was dead, jump-started, recently replaced, or repeatedly struggles to start the engine.
- The camera area is contaminated from inside the windshield or repeatedly fogs.
- EyeSight repeatedly cuts in and out under normal conditions.
- Steering, braking, engine, or stability-control behavior feels abnormal.
Ask the shop to identify whether the issue is a temporary stop, stored EyeSight fault, low-voltage event, camera alignment problem, windshield optical problem, communication fault, or another vehicle-system condition. A Subaru retailer is the safest choice when camera calibration or Subaru Select Monitor access is required, although a qualified ADAS shop may be able to perform appropriate model-specific work.
Warranty and settlement considerations
Subaru Service Bulletin 07-235-25, issued July 29, 2025, created a warranty extension for selected EyeSight-related components and selected U.S. model years. The listed vehicle groups include certain:
- 2013–2022 Legacy and Outback.
- 2015–2023 Impreza and Crosstrek.
- 2014–2021 Forester.
- 2016–2021 WRX/STI.
- 2019–2022 Ascent.
- 2022–2024 BRZ.
This is not a blanket promise to repair every complaint that says “EyeSight not working.” The bulletin concerns qualifying, confirmed failures involving specified EyeSight or rear-sonar components, particularly reports of phantom braking or unnecessary slowing. Eligibility depends on the vehicle identification number, model year, component, diagnosis, and applicable terms. Review the 2025 Subaru warranty-extension bulletin or ask an authorized retailer to check the VIN.

DIY procedures to avoid
- Do not repeatedly restart the vehicle while driving or in an unsafe location.
- Do not intentionally trigger automatic emergency braking to test whether it works.
- Do not pull fuses without exact model-year service information.
- Do not disconnect the battery as a universal cure.
- Do not tape over the cameras to suppress the warning.
- Do not spray cleaner directly into the camera housing.
- Do not replace the windshield without confirming EyeSight calibration.
- Do not assume that a clear windshield rules out inside fogging, optical distortion, contamination, or misalignment.
- Do not treat a basic OBD scanner’s lack of codes as proof that EyeSight is functioning.
- Do not continue using adaptive cruise or lane assistance after EyeSight reports that it is disabled.
Battery disconnection, fuse removal, camera covering, and generic DIY calibration advice appear in some third-party coverage, but they are not appropriate default instructions for a vehicle safety system. Subaru’s documented approach is to resolve temporary conditions, restart once when instructed, and obtain diagnosis or calibration when the warning persists.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long should I drive before EyeSight comes back on?
Subaru manuals do not provide one universal recovery time for every model, warning, weather condition, and EyeSight version. After cleaning or defogging the windshield and allowing the temperature to normalize, drive only when safe and give the system time to restart. If it remains disabled under normal conditions, arrange inspection rather than repeatedly resetting it.
Can a low battery make Subaru EyeSight stop working?
Yes, low voltage can be a diagnostic clue, especially after a dead battery, jump-start, hard starting, or battery replacement. It is not proof that the battery is the only problem. Have the battery, charging system, grounds, and relevant modules tested with Subaru-capable diagnostic equipment.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Does a new Subaru windshield require EyeSight calibration?
Subaru requires camera inspection, adjustment, and automatic calibration after windshield replacement. Use glass specified for the exact model and year and ask for documentation that calibration completed successfully. A clear windshield alone does not prove that the cameras are correctly aligned.
Can I use cruise control while EyeSight is disabled?
Some Subaru models may retain conventional cruise-control operation while EyeSight is unavailable, but the exact behavior varies. Do not assume that working cruise control means adaptive cruise, pre-collision braking, lane assistance, or the full EyeSight system is active.
The Bottom Line
The practical Subaru EyeSight reset is limited: stop safely, record the message and warning color, restart the vehicle once, clean and defog the windshield, and wait for temporary weather or temperature conditions to clear. A white warning may recover automatically. A yellow warning that remains after the restart is a malfunction requiring diagnosis. Windshield replacement, collision repairs, low-voltage events, camera obstructions, and alignment or calibration problems cannot be reliably fixed with a touchscreen setting, battery disconnect, or fuse pull.
