The useful comparison is between specific models, tires and intended uses—not brand labels alone.
What Subaru means by Symmetrical AWD
Subaru’s U.S. explanation describes AWD as using front, rear and center differentials, with sensors monitoring traction and grip. It divides AWD into full-time and part-time categories and says most Subaru vehicles use full-time AWD. “Symmetrical” also refers to the layout. Subaru Corporation describes a longitudinally mounted Boxer engine aligned with a symmetrically arranged drivetrain. The company says the Boxer engine’s low center of gravity and the drivetrain’s weight balance contribute to stability and traction. Specific Subaru systems can have different operating details. For example, Subaru UK says its Lineartronic CVT paired with Active Torque Split AWD has a normal front-to-rear split of 60:40, with sensors adjusting torque as grip, speed and stability change. How Subaru’s approach differs from Honda Real Time AWD
Honda’s official description of Real Time AWD outlines a condition-responsive approach. The system assesses inputs including steering angle, yaw rate, accelerator position, wheel speed and transmission gear to adjust driving force between the front and rear wheels. Honda says it can send force rearward during acceleration before the front wheels exceed their grip limit. When the accelerator is released, Honda says rear-wheel force stops and the vehicle switches to two-wheel drive during deceleration. Honda’s Real Time AWD explanation.
This is a useful contrast in control strategy: Subaru describes most of its vehicles as full-time AWD, while Honda describes a system that varies rear-wheel force with conditions. It does not establish that every Subaru or Honda model uses the same hardware or calibration, nor does it show which system performs better in a matched test.

What the difference means on snow and ordinary roads
Both automakers describe their systems as helping provide traction and stability on slippery surfaces. Subaru Canada emphasizes full-time operation in winter conditions. Honda describes adjusting front-to-rear force on snow-covered roads, during uphill starts and while cornering. AWD can help a vehicle make use of available grip to accelerate and maintain traction, but it does not guarantee safe stopping or prevent every loss of control. Tires, road conditions and driving inputs still matter. AWD cannot create grip where the tires have little traction.

A current example: 2026 Subaru Ascent
Subaru’s 2026 Ascent trim comparison lists Symmetrical AWD and X-MODE as standard on every listed trim. Subaru says X-MODE adjusts engine output and transmission ratio, increases AWD engagement, and uses vehicle-dynamics control to reduce individual wheelspin on low-friction surfaces. How to make a fair Subaru-versus-rival comparison
Start with two named vehicles of similar size and model year in the same market. Then compare the following details rather than relying on a general AWD label:

- System behavior: Is it full-time, on-demand or a model-specific hybrid or electric arrangement?
- Torque control: How is power routed between axles, and what inputs trigger a change?
- Surface and task: Look for evidence on the conditions you care about—snow, gravel, wet pavement or uneven ground—and distinguish acceleration traction from handling or off-road capability.
- Equipment: Compare tires, ground clearance and any traction modes on the exact trims.
- Efficiency: Check fuel-economy figures for the same model year, market and comparable vehicle configuration.
- Independent testing: Prefer tests that control for tire type, vehicle class, surface, weather and driver inputs. Without those controls, differences may reflect more than the AWD system.
Honda says its system may reduce rear drive to support efficiency, while Subaru describes most of its vehicles as full-time AWD. Those are design descriptions, not matched fuel-economy or performance results for comparable vehicles. Honda’s system description and Subaru’s AWD overview.

Subaru Corporation says its AWD system debuted in September 1972 with the Leone 4WD Estate Van, which the company describes as Japan’s first mass-produced AWD passenger car. In a September 15, 2022 release, Subaru reported about 21 million AWD vehicles produced by that date; its footnote says the total includes AWD systems other than Symmetrical AWD. The company also reported that 98% of global Subaru sales were AWD models, excluding OEM-supplied vehicles. So, is Subaru AWD better?
Subaru’s AWD has a distinctive layout and a full-time operating philosophy on most of its vehicles, but neither feature alone proves superiority. The evidence here does not provide a current, independent, matched-condition test against Honda or other rivals. Whether Subaru is the better choice depends on the particular vehicles, their equipment and how you plan to use them.
