The changes are part of Re:Nissan, the automaker’s recovery plan. Nissan set the end of fiscal year 2025 as the deadline for the reorganization, but the announcement does not establish that every transition was completed by then.
Which Nissan design studios are closing?
Nissan named two studios for wind-down: Nissan Design America in San Diego and Nissan Design Latin America in São Paulo. The company said their design activities and programs would transfer to other studios. Its announcement did not say that the London or Japan operations would close; it said those operations would be downsized.

Nissan’s September 16 announcement set an end-of-FY2025 timetable for the realignment. That is the company’s announced deadline, not independent confirmation that all work and transfers were completed at each location.
How will Nissan’s design organization work afterward?
Nissan described five continuing hubs, each with a designated role. The company presented these as the intended structure, not as an assessment of results already delivered.

- Shanghai — Nissan Design China: design work tailored to China.
- Tokyo — The Creative Box Studio: experiential brand and lifestyle design.
Explaining the planned model, Nissan corporate executive of Global Design Alfonso Albaisa said: “We are reshaping our operations into five agile hubs that harness new technologies and creative energy to deliver faster, smarter, and more connected design solutions, ensuring resilience and relevance in a rapidly evolving industry.” That is Nissan’s stated rationale and aspiration for the structure.
Why is Nissan changing its design operations?
Nissan placed the realignment within Re:Nissan, a recovery plan it introduced in response to a challenging business environment and a high-cost structure. The company’s Re:Nissan overview says it aims to achieve positive automotive operating profit and positive free cash flow by FY2026, alongside cost reduction, product and market strategy, and partnerships. Those are aims, not reported accomplishments.

The design changes form one part of a wider company plan. In its May 13, 2025 announcement, Nissan set targets of 500 billion yen in total cost savings versus FY2024 actuals, 20,000 fewer employees, and reducing its plant count from 17 to 10 by FY2027. These are company-wide targets; Nissan did not attribute the savings target to the design-studio changes. Nissan’s Re:Nissan plan announcement does not provide a separate savings figure for the design realignment.

Nissan did not disclose a job-impact figure for the design reorganization, according to Reuters’ report on September 16, 2025. The company-wide target to reduce employees by 20,000 is not a design-studio headcount and does not establish how many roles, if any, are affected at each location.
