Stellantis, the parent company of Chrysler and Jeep, announced STLA AutoDrive 1.0 in February 2025 as an in-house automated-driving system with a planned Level 3 mode. That mode was described as hands-free and eyes-off at speeds up to 60 km/h (37 mph), but Reuters reported in August 2025 that it had not launched. Stellantis said it was ready to deploy, while Reuters sources said the program was on ice; no customer launch has been confirmed.
What Stellantis announced
On February 20, 2025, Stellantis introduced STLA AutoDrive 1.0 as its first in-house-developed automated-driving system. The company described several levels of assistance rather than one capability available in every situation.
- Level 3: hands-free and eyes-off operation in qualifying conditions, with an announced maximum speed of 60 km/h (37 mph).
- Level 2: hands-on assistance.
- Level 2+: hands-free but eyes-on assistance at higher speeds, including adaptive cruise control and lane centering.
Stellantis said the Level 3 mode was intended for low-speed, stop-and-go traffic to reduce driver workload. Its examples of tasks a driver might temporarily do while the system was engaged included watching a movie, checking email, or reading. Those examples are the company’s description, not permission to disengage from the system’s operating conditions or instructions. Stellantis’s announcement also said the system was designed to evolve, with potential future operation up to 95 km/h (59 mph) and off-road capability. Those were possibilities, not the stated initial Level 3 specification.
Does Chrysler or Jeep have Level 3 self-driving?
The announcement does not establish that a Chrysler or Jeep customer can buy a vehicle with STLA AutoDrive Level 3. It names no production model, market, regulatory approval, or customer launch date for the feature. Stellantis’s role as the parent company explains the connection to those brands; it does not mean the announced system was installed in a Chrysler or Jeep for sale. The company’s release lists Chrysler and Jeep among Stellantis’s brands.

Why the launch status is uncertain
Reuters reported on August 26, 2025, that Stellantis confirmed its announced Level 3 software had not launched. A company spokesperson said demand for the feature was limited, but also described the technology as available and ready to deploy. Three people familiar with the program told Reuters it had been put on ice and was not expected to deploy. Stellantis did not call the system canceled in the quoted statement, so the accurate status is not launched, with future deployment uncertain. Reuters’s account includes the differing descriptions.
How the later Wayve plan differs
On May 21, 2026, Stellantis and Wayve announced a planned integration of Wayve’s AI Driver into STLA AutoDrive. The initial planned product is supervised Level 2++ hands-free driving for highway and urban environments, with a North American launch target in 2028. It is a separate supervised-driving plan—not confirmation that the 2025 Level 3 feature has reached production. The 2028 date is a target, not a confirmed delivery date. Stellantis and Wayve’s announcement describes the plan.

Stellantis has also announced an expanded technology partnership with Qualcomm involving Snapdragon Ride Pilot, a driver-assistance platform described as scalable from active-safety and regulatory features to Level 2+ hands-free driving and beyond. That announcement gives context to the company’s broader driver-assistance direction; it does not announce a Level 3 launch. The Qualcomm partnership announcement describes that platform.

“Hands-free” and “eyes-off” are not interchangeable. When comparing a driving feature, check its SAE level and whether the driver must keep eyes on the road, its permitted speed and conditions, and whether it is merely announced, available, or actually launched. Treat a future date as a target unless the company confirms delivery. For STLA AutoDrive, the 60 km/h (37 mph) figure was the announced Level 3 ceiling; 95 km/h (59 mph) was only a potential future capability. These are company-stated specifications, not independent safety-performance results.
