Stella Terra is an experimental solar-electric off-road vehicle built by Solar Team Eindhoven, a student team at Eindhoven University of Technology—not a production RV or a vehicle available to buy. The team said its roof-mounted solar panels were designed to contribute energy for driving as well as onboard uses such as cooking and charging devices. Its widely reported range and speed figures are prototype-era team claims, not independently verified results.
What is the Stella Terra solar off-road car?
Stella Terra is Solar Team Eindhoven’s solar-electric off-road prototype. The team announced the concept on 9 March 2023 as its first robust off-road car, intended to combine the ability to handle rough terrain with the low weight and efficiency needed to use solar power. The official announcement described roof panels supplying energy for driving and everyday onboard needs, including cooking and charging a phone or camera. Solar Team Eindhoven’s concept announcement quotes team manager Wisse Bos: “The car must be able to handle the tough conditions of off-roading, but also remain efficient and light enough to be powered by the sun.”
The solar system was integrated into the vehicle’s design; it should not be confused with a typical add-on panel kit. The concept was meant to demonstrate what solar energy might contribute to off-grid mobility, rather than present a consumer vehicle specification or a ready-to-buy travel solution.
How far can Stella Terra go?
New Atlas reported in October 2023 that Solar Team Eindhoven put Stella Terra’s maximum range at up to 630 km (391 miles) when solar energy was available on a sunny day. The same report attributed a top speed of 145 km/h (90 mph) and a weight of about 1,200 kg (2,646 lb) to the team. These are reported prototype specifications, not independently verified consumer ratings.

New Atlas also reported that the team described an expandable solar charging system and stored power for devices and electric cooking appliances. The official concept announcement supports the intended uses of solar energy, but it is not a full technical specification sheet. Neither the official announcements nor the New Atlas report cited here provide a complete test log, independently measured efficiency, or solar contribution by route segment.
What happened on the Morocco test?
Solar Team Eindhoven presented Stella Terra in September 2023 and announced a planned October trip through northern Morocco. Its event listing described a thousand-kilometer journey across varied Moroccan landscapes, and a team post dated 11 September 2023 confirmed the planned trip. The team’s News & Events page and its Morocco trip announcement document those plans.

Those announcements establish the intended test, not an independently audited account of a completed 1,000-km drive. The sources cited here do not establish the exact final route, conditions, measured range, or solar output during the journey. The trip should therefore be described as a planned test, not proof that the vehicle achieved the reported maximum range in real-world off-road conditions.
How Stella Terra differs from Stella Vita
The similar names refer to two different Solar Team Eindhoven projects. Stella Terra is the off-road car; the team’s Stella Family page describes Stella Vita as its solar motorhome, or self-sustaining house on wheels. Vita was designed around travel and living space, while Terra’s defining purpose was off-road driving. The team’s broader identity and university connection are described on its About Us page.

Terra is also distinct from consumer portable solar panels for overlanding. A portable panel can supply or replenish energy for campsite and vehicle accessories, depending on the equipment and conditions; it does not reproduce Terra’s custom integrated system or establish that a conventional vehicle can drive on solar power alone.
