It is now a discontinued vehicle, not a new-car option: the manufacturer’s recall notice says affected owners should not drive their vehicles and that the company stopped Solo service, warranty support, and parts supply. Its American ambitions also came with a regulatory wrinkle—the company described the Solo as a motorcycle under U.S. federal rules, rather than a car in a dedicated autocycle class.
What was the ElectraMeccanica Solo?
ElectraMeccanica, a Canadian company, designed the Solo as a single-occupant electric commuter. The company called it “a purpose-built, all-electric, three-wheeled vehicle for the modern urban environment” when it announced production in August 2020. Commercial production began August 26, 2020, according to that announcement, and the company’s 2022 filing said first commercial customer deliveries began in October 2021. ElectraMeccanica’s production announcement and its May 2022 filing establish that history; they do not indicate current availability.
The concept’s defining tradeoff was its packaging: it carried one person in a narrow three-wheel layout, rather than offering the passenger capacity of an ordinary two- or five-seat car. That made it an unusual commuter proposition, but also meant buyers had to consider a less familiar vehicle classification and the practical consequences of discontinued support.
What range and performance did the Solo claim?
ElectraMeccanica’s May 2022 filing listed up to 100 miles of range, an 80 mph top speed, and an approximately 10-second 0–60 mph time. These are historical manufacturer-reported specifications, not independent test results or a guarantee of real-world range. The available evidence does not establish how far a Solo would travel in varied temperatures, at highway speeds, or as its battery aged.

The same filing listed air conditioning, a heated seat, power steering, power brakes, a rear camera, Bluetooth/USB audio, a heater, and a defogger. It gave a U.S. suggested retail price of $18,500 at the time. That is a 2022 stated MSRP—not a current offer, present-day used value, or evidence of what a particular Solo should cost now.
Why was the Solo’s classification unusual in the United States?
In its 2022 filing, ElectraMeccanica said the Solo fit the federal definition of a motorcycle in the United States because U.S. regulations did not provide a specific autocycle class. The company described Canada’s treatment differently: it said the Solo fell within a three-wheeled-vehicle category under the Canadian Motor Vehicle Safety Regulations.

That federal classification does not settle every practical operating question. Licensing, helmet, registration, and other requirements can depend on the state and the applicable rules, which may change. A U.S. owner or prospective buyer should check current requirements with the relevant state motor-vehicle agency rather than rely on the company’s historical account of state-level exceptions.
Is the Solo safe to drive, and what recalls matter?
Loss-of-propulsion recall for specified G2 and G3 vehicles
ElectraMeccanica’s 2023 recall notice covered Solo G2 and G3 model years 2019, 2021, 2022, and 2023 because the vehicles could lose propulsion while driving. The notice said: “Owners are advised to not drive their vehicles.” It described repurchase as the remedy and said the company was discontinuing the Solo, ending G3 service and warranty support, and no longer supplying parts. This warning applies to the vehicles identified in the notice; a model name alone does not establish whether a specific vehicle is affected or whether its recall remedy was completed. A separate 2023 communication from ElectraMeccanica said it voluntarily recalled the G3 and paused sales and deliveries during its investigation into possible loss of propulsion and increased crash risk. The company’s safety communication concerns that same propulsion issue; it is not a substitute for checking an individual vehicle’s recall status.
Separate U.S. noncompliance notice for certain 2018 vehicles
A different issue concerns certain 2018 Solo motorcycles in the United States. In 2025, the U.S. Department of Transportation reported that those vehicles did not fully comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 120, covering tire selection and rims, and that NHTSA granted ElectraMeccanica’s petition for a decision of inconsequential noncompliance. This is separate from the later loss-of-propulsion recall and involves a different model year and defect. The Department of Transportation’s 2025 notice describes the decision.

What should a used-Solo buyer or current owner check?
The manufacturer’s notice makes support status a central ownership concern: it says Solo production was discontinued, G3 service and warranty support stopped, and parts were no longer provided. The available evidence does not establish a current purchase channel or a dependable source of Solo-compatible aftermarket parts. Before considering a used vehicle, verify its exact VIN and recall completion with the appropriate official source, and separately establish whether qualified service and needed parts are actually available.
- Identify the vehicle precisely. Record the VIN and model year; do not infer recall status from a listing description or the Solo name alone.
- Check the official recall record. In Canada, Transport Canada says its online recall information and VIN lookup requirement took effect January 1, 2025; use its recall-information announcement to reach the relevant resources. U.S. buyers should use the applicable official U.S. recall lookup and consult the manufacturer’s notice.
- Confirm the remedy in vehicle-specific records. Ask for documentation showing whether an applicable recall was completed or the vehicle was repurchased. Do not treat a seller’s verbal assurance as confirmation.
- Verify support before purchase. Ask a qualified service provider about the specific vehicle, diagnosis, repair capability, and parts availability. The company’s notice states that it no longer supplied parts or supported G3 service and warranties.
- Check local operating rules. Confirm current licensing, helmet, registration, and road-use requirements with the relevant jurisdiction.
Does the Solo still make sense as an American commuter?
As an idea, the Solo was distinctive: a one-person electric vehicle intended for urban commuting, with manufacturer-stated range and speed figures that made it sound more capable than a low-speed neighborhood vehicle. But those figures were company claims in a 2022 filing, not independent results, and the vehicle’s one-seat layout is a substantial limitation for anyone who needs to carry passengers.

Today, the discontinued status, recall warning for specified vehicles, and stated end of parts and support weigh more heavily than the original concept. It should be approached as a historical, vehicle-specific used-ownership question—not as a currently supported new EV choice.
