Starting a Car: Handbrake or Drive First?

Apply the parking brake before starting, then use the correct start position for your transmission. Select a driving gear only with the footbrake held.

Apply the parking brake before starting; do not select Drive first. The next step depends on whether the car is manual or automatic: the manual examples reviewed start in Neutral with the clutch depressed, while the automatic examples use Park (with some models allowing Neutral). Keep the car held by the footbrake when selecting a driving gear, and release the parking brake only when you are ready to move. Check the manual for your exact car, because start interlocks and permitted selector positions vary.

Why “handbrake or Drive first?” is not an either-or choice

The parking brake secures the stationary car. Drive is a transmission position for moving off, not the position to select before starting under the procedures described in the manuals below. For an automatic, start in Park unless your owner’s manual specifies another permitted position; for the manual-transmission examples, start in Neutral with the clutch depressed.

“Handbrake” commonly means the parking brake, whether the car uses a lever or an electronic control. The exact control and sequence depend on the vehicle. Treat the dashboard prompts and the owner’s manual for your make, model, year, transmission and market as authoritative.

Starting procedure by transmission

Manual transmission

  1. Apply the parking brake.
  2. Select Neutral.
  3. Depress the clutch and brake pedals, then start the engine as directed for your car.

Hyundai’s 2025 Tucson instructions specify the parking brake applied, Neutral selected, and clutch and brake depressed before pressing the start button. Kia’s 2024 instructions also specify the parking brake, Neutral and clutch fully depressed, with the clutch and brake held until the engine starts. These are model-specific examples, not a rule that overrides another car’s manual. Hyundai 2025 Tucson owner’s manual; Kia 2024 owner’s manual.

Automatic or dual-clutch transmission

  1. Apply the parking brake.
  2. Select Park.
  3. Depress the footbrake and start the engine.

Hyundai’s 2025 Tucson and Kia’s 2024 instructions describe starting in Park with the footbrake depressed. Kia also notes that its vehicle can start in Neutral; use Park as the default when your manual allows it. Do not assume that a different model has the same interlock or permitted start positions. When to select Drive and release the parking brake

Once the engine is running, keep your foot on the brake while selecting a driving position. Release the parking brake when ready to move, following the car’s own instructions. For example, Nissan UK’s 2024 Juke manual says to start in P or N with the footbrake depressed, keep the footbrake down while selecting a driving position, then release the parking brake and footbrake to move away. That sequence is specific to the Juke procedure reviewed. Nissan UK 2024 Juke owner’s manual.

What to do if your car will not start

  • Confirm the selector is in Park or Neutral as the manual requires; an automatic’s start interlock may prevent starting in another position.
  • For a manual, check that the clutch is fully depressed and Neutral is selected if that is the specified procedure.
  • Keep the parking brake applied while troubleshooting and follow any dashboard prompt. Do not force the selector or bypass an interlock.
  • If the controls or required position are unclear, consult the owner’s manual for the exact model and year rather than relying on another car’s procedure.

Which source takes priority?

Use the owner’s manual for your own car, including its transmission, model year and market. Ford’s general online owner-manual guidance says to set the parking brake and select Park or Neutral before attempting to start, but the displayed page does not identify a particular model-year variant; it is not a substitute for that vehicle’s manual.
