Ford’s gold tractors were 1959 dealer demonstrators for the Select-O-Speed transmission—not a regular gold production option. They are also different from the 1953 Ford NAA Golden Jubilee, a commemorative tractor named for the company’s 50th anniversary. The stars-and-stripes Case tractors were a separate promotion for a different occasion.
What were Ford’s gold demonstrator tractors?
In 1959, Ford painted Powermaster-series tractors Lincoln-automobile gold and sent them to dealers to promote the Select-O-Speed transmission. Dealers were expected to demonstrate the tractors to prospective customers in working conditions, putting the new feature on display in the field. The Ford Fordson Collectors Association says dealers were required to have at least one gold demonstrator available.
The campaign involved various 801-series models. Dave Mowitz reported an estimate of more than 2,000 tractors sent out as the models came off the assembly lines in January 1959, while noting that details of the program are scant. That figure is an estimate, not a confirmed production total. Agriculture.com’s account of the promotional tractors describes the gold finish as a way to draw attention as well as distinguish the machines during demonstrations.
What the Select-O-Speed offered
The association describes the Select-O-Speed as a transmission with ten forward speeds and two reverse, with shifting possible without using the clutch. A high-profile demonstration campaign promoted that capability, but the association also notes that the transmission had problems in its early release, followed by warranty support, and that its reputation persisted. That history is not a blanket verdict on every transmission or surviving tractor.

What happened to the demonstrators afterward?
Dealers later sold the demonstrators locally. Buyers could keep the gold finish or repaint the tractors in standard Ford colors. Because repainting was an option, a present-day gold finish alone does not establish that a tractor is an original demonstrator; its history and provenance matter. The association describes surviving gold demonstrators as collectible, but the sources cited here do not establish how many survive or provide a reliable current valuation.
Is a Ford Golden Jubilee the same as a gold demonstrator?
No. The 1953 Ford NAA Golden Jubilee is a separate tractor associated with Ford’s 50th anniversary. The gold demonstrators belong to the 1959 Select-O-Speed promotion. Their shared connection to gold can cause confusion, but the name, date, and purpose differ. The Ford Fordson Collectors Association’s tractor identification and model history covers both the Jubilee and the demonstrator program.

| Ford gold demonstrators | 1959; dealer promotion for Select-O-Speed, involving various 801-series models | The tractors were painted gold for the campaign and demonstrated to prospective buyers. |
What were the stars-and-stripes Case tractors?
The red, white, and blue Case tractors known as Spirit of ’76 machines were a separate manufacturer’s promotion for the U.S. bicentennial. Dave Mowitz reports six Case 1370s and an estimated 200 to 300 Case 1570s in the special paint scheme. Those figures describe the Case example, not Ford’s gold campaign. Mowitz’s article also recounts International Harvester’s 1950 white Farmall demonstrator campaign, another example of distinctive paint being used to attract attention and encourage demonstrations.

For a full-size tractor
- Check the tractor’s model and serial-number context against a reference such as the Ford Fordson Collectors Association’s model history.
- Ask for documentation of its dealer or ownership history. Since demonstrators could be repainted, neither a gold finish nor a standard-color finish proves or disproves campaign use on its own.
- Separate documented sales from asking prices when assessing value. The sources cited here do not provide a current census of surviving demonstrators or a reliable valuation dataset.
For a replica
ERTL’s 2023 Australia/New Zealand catalogue lists a 1:16 Ford 881 tractor model, but does not identify that entry as a gold demonstrator replica or establish current availability. It also lists a 1:16 Ford 8N with a 75th-anniversary designation. These catalogue entries document scale models, not the identity or history of a full-size tractor. ERTL’s catalogue page is the regional source for those entries.
