Star Wars: Galactic Racer looks like a promising choice for players who want a demanding, run-based racer—not a casual lap-and-reset arcade game. The Drive’s review of the pre-release game praises its sense of purpose and gives it 9/10, while describing a steep learning curve and losses that sting. Podracing is one of four craft classes, and online cross-platform play is listed; the announced launch is October 6, 2026, on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
That makes the buying question less “Is there podracing?”—there is—and more “Do you want to learn a demanding control scheme and risk losing progress in a campaign run?” The review evidence below is attributed to its writers; it is not a claim of our own playtest.
What kind of Star Wars racer is Galactic Racer?
Official materials describe Star Wars: Galactic Racer as a “runs-based” racing game set in the Outer Rim after the Empire’s fall. Its Galactic League is an unsanctioned circuit, and the story follows Shade, a racer pursuing revenge and glory. The promotional copy puts the emphasis plainly: “No Force. No prophecy. Just skill, strategy, and the will to rise.”
Racing, rather than Force powers or combat, is the premise. The game comes from Fuse Games and is published by Secret Mode, according to Steam’s listing. Lucasfilm’s reveal interview situated the project as a return to Star Wars racing; Lucasfilm Games VP and GM Douglas Reilly said, “I can’t think of any other studio better suited to bring Star Wars racing back to our fans.” That endorsement is context, not proof that this game plays like any earlier racer.

Does Galactic Racer have podracing?
Yes. The official vehicle lineup includes four classes: landspeeders, speeder bikes, skim speeders, and podracers. The Drive’s reviewer describes podracers as larger and much faster than the other craft, while the other classes distinguish themselves through their handling: landspeeders drift, speeder bikes lean and boost out of turns, and skim speeders turn in a tight radius.
Those differences suggest the vehicle choice is more than a cosmetic nod to the films. Each class asks for a different approach to corners and acceleration. The Drive’s review is the source for those handling impressions; they should be read as a reviewer’s account rather than independently measured performance data.
Why the campaign can feel punishing
The central risk is built into the “runs-based” structure. The Drive describes preparing a craft and its upgrades before attempting a high-stakes sequence, then feeling the loss when a race goes badly. Its reviewer says early defeats were frustrating, but that learning more about the game made returning to a run motivating.

TechRadar describes a campaign that moves through qualifiers into the Galactic Tour, with branching routes and League Tokens influencing which choices feel worthwhile. Its review names standard races, Field Tests, Mystery Encounters, and Eliminator events. The reviewer found the loop exciting and replayable, but said Field Tests became repetitive and cautioned that the learning curve will not suit everyone.
These are two reviewers’ descriptions of the pre-release experience, not a universal prediction of how every player will respond. The appeal is clearest if setbacks make you want to adapt your setup and try again. If you prefer forgiving retries and steady forward progress, the run structure may be a poor fit.
How demanding are the controls?
The Drive’s review describes several systems layered on top of steering. Afterburner provides a modest boost that depletes and refills; Ramjet delivers a stronger burst but can overheat and explode. Craft abilities may include a shield or temporary autopilot, while drifting or leaning uses a separate control. The reviewer says managing these inputs contributes to a steep learning curve.

That combination is part of the challenge, not just an optional advanced technique in the review’s account. Expect to learn how your craft turns, when to use each boost, and how to manage its ability while racing. The available sources do not establish that a controller or racing wheel is required or officially recommended.
What reviews say—and what they do not establish
The Drive awarded the game 9/10. Reviewer Adam Ismail argues that the story and progression give races a purpose beyond the arcade thrill, while also describing difficult early losses and demanding controls. That is one reviewer’s score and judgment, not a consensus rating or a verdict based on our own play.
TechRadar offers a separate view: it praises the excitement and replayability of the run loop, but flags repetitive Field Tests and a learning curve that may not suit every player. Its reviewer noted that Podracing Tour was locked during the review period, so that review does not establish how the mode plays.

Should you buy Star Wars: Galactic Racer?
Based on the available pre-launch reviews, Galactic Racer is most compelling for players who want podracing alongside other craft classes, a campaign built around risky runs, and a racer that asks them to master several controls. The Drive’s 9/10 verdict and TechRadar’s praise for replayability point to real appeal, but both reviews also make the difficulty—or repetitive sections—a reason to be cautious.
If you are buying before launch, remember that the public release is announced for October 6, 2026. Recheck the store page for final requirements and your region’s edition availability, and look for launch-day confirmation of mode access and online conditions.
