The Nissan SR20DET is a 1,998cc turbocharged DOHC inline-four whose appeal comes from its place in two very different performance cars: the rear-wheel-drive Silvia and the four-wheel-drive Pulsar GTI-R. Nissan’s factory records show strong—but application-specific—outputs across the range. Calling it “one of the world’s best” is an enthusiast judgment, not a conclusion established by a comparative reliability study or engine ranking.
What is the Nissan SR20DET?
SR20DET is the turbocharged member of Nissan’s SR20 engine family. Nissan identifies it as a 1,998cc DOHC inline-four in its Pulsar GTI-R heritage record and describes the S15 Spec-R’s version as an intercooled turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four in a 1999 Silvia release.
There is no single factory output figure for every SR20DET. Published specifications vary by car, model year, market and specification context. The GTI-R figure below, for example, is explicitly labeled by Nissan as an FIA Group A specification, not a universal road-car rating.
Which cars used the SR20DET, and how much power did it make?
| Application | Nissan-published engine specification | Context |
|---|---|---|
| Pulsar GTI-R, 1992 heritage entry | 1,998cc; 230 PS at 6,400 rpm; 284 N·m at 4,800 rpm | Nissan labels this the FIA Group A specification. Nissan heritage record |
| Silvia S14 K’s Type S, 1994 | SR20DET; 220 PS at 6,000 rpm; 274 N·m at 4,800 rpm | Nissan heritage model entry. Nissan heritage record |
| Silvia S15 Spec-R, 1999 launch | 1,998cc; 250 PS at 6,400 rpm; 28.0 kg-m at 4,800 rpm; 8.5:1 compression | Nissan release specifies an intercooled engine and six-speed manual for the Spec-R. Nissan release |
These are not controlled, like-for-like engine tests. The applications differ in vehicle, year and specification, so the values should not be treated as a direct comparison of otherwise identical engines.

How did the SR20DET develop in the Silvia?
1988: The S13 starts with CA18 engines
The fifth-generation S13 Silvia debuted in 1988 with engines from Nissan’s CA18 family. The SR20 was not in the car at launch, according to Nissan’s S13 history.
1991: Nissan moves the S13 to the SR20
Nissan says the S13 engine range changed to 2.0-liter SR20 engines in 1991. In the turbocharged K’s, that meant the SR20DET. This model-year change matters when identifying or buying parts: “S13 SR20DET” refers to the later engine application, not the original 1988 engine range.

1993–94: The S14 K’s Type S
Nissan introduced the S14 in 1993. Its 1994 K’s Type S used an SR20DET rated at 220 PS at 6,000 rpm and 274 N·m at 4,800 rpm in the company’s heritage listing.
1999: The S15 Spec-R
For the S15 Spec-R launch, Nissan listed 250 PS at 6,400 rpm, 28.0 kg-m at 4,800 rpm and an 8.5:1 compression ratio. The release identifies the engine as intercooled and pairs the Spec-R with a six-speed manual. Those details belong to that specified model and should not be generalized to every SR20DET.

Why does the Pulsar GTI-R add a different dimension?
The Silvia placed the SR20DET in a rear-wheel-drive sports coupe; the Pulsar GTI-R put related engine technology into a four-wheel-drive package. Nissan describes the GTI-R as the top-performance N14 developed with Group A and World Rally Championship competition in mind, with 4WD and ATTESA. Its heritage page records WRC participation from 1991 and a third-place result at the 1992 Swedish Rally. Those competition links help explain the engine’s distinctive reputation, but the GTI-R’s Group A power figure is not a general specification for every road-going SR20DET.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why do enthusiasts regard the SR20DET so highly?
The official record supports a clear case for its historical significance: Nissan used the turbocharged 2.0-liter in multiple performance applications, from Silvia coupes to the competition-oriented GTI-R, and published outputs ranging from the S14’s 220 PS to the S15 Spec-R’s 250 PS in their respective factory contexts. Nissan’s Yokohama engine exhibit described it as a “Next-generation turbocharged DOHC engine that competes with US and European rivals,” associating the exhibit with a 1993 Silvia S14. That is Nissan’s period promotional language, not an independent comparison.

The phrase “one of the world’s best” therefore depends on what a reader values: engineering history, factory performance, motorsport context or the variety of cars that used the engine. The cited records establish applications and specifications; they do not establish an objective global ranking, comparative reliability rate, or a universal tuning ceiling.

What should you check when comparing or buying SR20DET parts?
- Identify the application: confirm the chassis and engine variant, such as an S13 Silvia, S14 K’s Type S, S15 Spec-R or Pulsar GTI-R.
- Separate factory figures from competition specifications: Nissan’s 230 PS GTI-R entry is labeled FIA Group A, while the S14 and S15 figures are tied to specific Silvia models.
- Match parts to the exact engine and chassis: a Wössner 2021 catalog lists forged pistons for GTI-R and 200SX SR20DET applications, but that listing does not establish universal interchangeability, present-day availability or fitment across all SR20DET variants. See the Wössner 2021 catalog and confirm the manufacturer’s current application details before purchase.
