Weeks before Elizabeth Pearce died in a crash on Birdwood Parade in Dalkeith, a Crawley resident raised concerns about speeding and other traffic on The Avenue. Those concerns were about a different road: the available reports do not establish that the complaint concerned the collision site.

Where were the traffic concerns raised?

At a City of Perth electors’ general meeting on January 28, 2025, Crawley resident Grey Roughan spoke about traffic on The Avenue, between Hackett Drive and Fairway. PerthNow reported that Roughan described traffic there as “unacceptable” and said the road was used as a “speedway.” He cited speeding concerns, noisy cars and motorbikes, and heavy construction traffic. PerthNow’s February 20, 2025 report covered the meeting and the later crash.

The Avenue is in Crawley. Pearce’s fatal collision happened on Birdwood Parade in Dalkeith on February 15. The reports do not say Roughan’s earlier complaint was about Birdwood Parade, nor do they establish that the concerns were formally reported to police or connected to the crash.

What did the City say about The Avenue?

PerthNow quoted City of Perth acting general manager of planning and sustainability Rob Farley as saying that raised intersections had been removed because of noise and maintenance issues, and raised plateaus had been installed instead. Farley said The Avenue carried over 5,000 vehicles a day and that: “Our data shows that average speeds are generally well controlled, indicating responsible behaviour by drivers.”

The report did not publish the underlying traffic data or explain how or when average speeds were measured. Roughan questioned the City’s account, telling PerthNow: “I would question statistics; they’re wonderful things and they produce answers that some people want.” These are statements made in the context of the local meeting report, not independently published measurements or formal findings.

What is reported about the fatal collision?

PerthNow reported that Pearce, 24, died after the rideshare car she had entered was struck by a Jaguar on Birdwood Parade. In its February 17, 2025 report, The West Australian reported the family’s tribute and the charges then brought against the driver: manslaughter and dangerous driving causing grievous bodily harm.

PerthNow reported on February 20 that the Perth Magistrates Court was told the accused had driven at speeds up to 130 km/h before the crash. That is a speed alleged in the court account reported at the time, not a general traffic statistic or an independently established finding in the reports cited here.

What later reporting says about alleged speeding

A later report by The West Australian said the court heard dashcam footage from February 9 allegedly showed speeding near Kings Park. The report describes the footage as evidence heard in court; it should not be treated as a finding that the earlier complaint about The Avenue predicted or was connected to the collision.
