SpaceX has agreed to buy Grain Management’s nationwide 800 MHz spectrum portfolio, a proposed acquisition that could add a lower-frequency coverage layer to Starlink Mobile. Grain announced the deal on October 8, 2026; it still requires Federal Communications Commission (FCC) approval and other customary closing conditions. SpaceX says the spectrum could help signals reach devices inside buildings, but the announcement does not establish that indoor Starlink Mobile service is available now.
What 800 MHz spectrum is SpaceX buying?
SpaceX agreed to acquire 100% of Grain Management’s nationwide 800 MHz spectrum portfolio. Via Satellite reported that the portfolio contains 14 MHz of paired spectrum. The purchase is a proposed transfer of spectrum licenses—not a completed acquisition—and its financial terms were not disclosed. Grain’s announcement says the transaction remains subject to FCC approval and customary closing conditions; Via Satellite’s report gives the spectrum-band detail.

Grain is the seller, not T-Mobile
Grain acquired the portfolio from T-Mobile in August 2026, following a separate FCC-approved spectrum exchange. In that earlier exchange, T-Mobile assigned certain 800 MHz licenses to Grain, while Grain assigned certain 600 MHz licenses to T-Mobile. The FCC described a competitive selection process and a conditional pathway for Grain to partner with direct-to-device operators, with conditions attached to the exchange. That approval applied to the T-Mobile–Grain transaction; it is not approval of SpaceX’s proposed purchase.
A separate SpaceX spectrum deal is not this one
SpaceX has also agreed to acquire licenses from EchoStar in a separate transaction involving AWS-4, H-Block, and AWS-3 spectrum. EchoStar’s SEC filing describes 15 MHz of AWS spectrum in the 1695–1710 MHz range for relevant license areas, and says the FCC approved that transaction in May 2026, with closing targeted for November 30, 2027, subject to conditions. Those licenses and that transaction are distinct from Grain’s 800 MHz portfolio. EchoStar’s SEC filing provides the details.

Why does SpaceX want 800 MHz spectrum?
SpaceX describes the 800 MHz licenses as a low-band coverage layer that would complement Starlink Mobile’s 2 GHz mid-band spectrum. Lower-frequency signals generally propagate differently from higher-frequency signals and can be useful for reaching areas where obstacles weaken reception. SpaceX specifically says the new spectrum would help its signal penetrate obstacles such as walls and could let customers’ devices receive service inside buildings.
That indoor-performance statement is SpaceX’s projected capability, not an independently measured result. The announcement does not provide indoor-coverage tests, service launch dates, or a list of compatible phones. It should not be read as proof that Starlink Mobile currently offers indoor cellular service or that a particular device will work with a future service. Via Satellite reproduced SpaceX’s statement: “While Starlink Mobile’s global 2 GHz mid-band spectrum will provide high-bandwidth capacity in the United States, this new low-band spectrum will provide a coverage layer that ensures Starlink Mobile’s signal penetrates through obstacles, such as walls, and can provide service to customers’ devices even when they are in buildings,” SpaceX said.

Is SpaceX sidestepping AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon?
The deal gives SpaceX a path to pursue network capabilities using its own spectrum holdings, but the claim that all three major carriers refused to partner with SpaceX is not supported by the available reporting. T-Mobile already has a satellite-to-phone relationship with SpaceX. Reporting also describes satellite arrangements between AT&T and Verizon and AST SpaceMobile. That does not establish that either carrier refused every possible partnership with SpaceX; it shows that the companies have pursued different satellite strategies. The FCC’s 2024 authorization covers SpaceX supplemental coverage from space under the T-Mobile arrangement, while Reuters’ reporting on Verizon and AST SpaceMobile describes a separate carrier partnership.

How the approaches differ—and what is not yet known
Satellite-to-device coverage, SpaceX’s proposed mix of satellite and terrestrial network components, and conventional carrier networks are different approaches. The available sources do not provide apples-to-apples performance measurements, so they do not establish which delivers better coverage, capacity, or indoor service in practice.

What happens next?
The next material step is FCC review of SpaceX’s proposed acquisition, followed by satisfaction of the other customary closing conditions stated by Grain. The earlier FCC approval of Grain’s acquisition from T-Mobile and the May 2026 approval of the separate EchoStar transaction do not resolve this review. Until the proposed sale is approved and closed, SpaceX has not acquired Grain’s portfolio. The announcement also does not establish a launch timetable, consumer pricing, or which devices would be supported.
