Hyundai, Kia and Mercedes-Benz had all disclosed battery-maker names voluntarily by August 13, according to KBS; that report does not establish Hyundai as the first. A supplier name can help identify what battery is in a vehicle, but it does not establish what caused a fire.
What prompted the disclosure push?
In August 2024, an electric vehicle caught fire while parked in an underground apartment parking facility in Incheon. The incident intensified public concern about EV batteries and charging safety. South Korea’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport (MOLIT) issued an August 13 notice concerning transparent disclosure of battery manufacturers and free special safety checks: MOLIT’s August 13, 2024 notice.
The disclosure debate was about making battery information more visible. The sources do not establish a technical cause for the Incheon fire, and naming a battery supplier is not proof that the supplier or its product caused it.
Did Hyundai disclose its battery suppliers first?
Not on the evidence available here. KBS reported on August 13 that Hyundai, Kia and Mercedes-Benz had already disclosed battery-manufacturer names voluntarily, as the government prepared to recommend broader disclosure. So “Hyundai first” should be treated as an unverified headline claim, not an established fact. The KBS account confirms that Hyundai was among the automakers that had disclosed names by that date, but it does not show that Hyundai was the first to do so.
What did South Korea announce next?
On September 6, 2024, the government announced an interagency EV fire-safety plan following the Incheon incident. It combined measures involving battery information, vehicle checks and diagnostics, charging, and underground parking. These were announced commitments with different implementation timelines, not evidence that every measure was already in place: Korea.net’s English summary of the September 6 plan.

Battery information and certification
- The government said it would bring forward a pilot for battery certification.
- It planned to require disclosure of the cell maker and other battery information. The official English summary said: “The extent of information disclosure will include key information, such as the battery maker and manufacturing technology.”
Checks and battery-management systems
- The plan called for expanding battery inspection items and diagnostic infrastructure.
- It also called for battery-management-system (BMS) safety updates and improved services. A BMS monitors and manages battery operation; the plan described intended safety improvements, not a finding about the cause of the Incheon fire.
Charging and underground parking safeguards
- The government planned broader smart-charging infrastructure.
- For new underground parking facilities, it proposed wet sprinklers, with an alternative for freezing-risk conditions; it also called for stronger checks of existing systems.
- Other announced measures included fire-resistant materials for underground parking structures and additional firefighting equipment.

It can help answer “Which battery maker is in my EV?”—provided the disclosure identifies the relevant vehicle or model and gives enough detail to distinguish battery components. A company name alone may not tell an owner the battery type, manufacturing technology, or whether the information applies to a particular model or vehicle. The September plan’s stated scope included the cell maker and other key battery information, including manufacturing technology.

Most importantly, disclosure is a transparency measure, not a safety ranking or a cause determination. The name of a battery maker, by itself, cannot show why a particular vehicle caught fire.
