South Africa’s BMW E30 333i and 325iS: Local Legends, Not One M3-Beater

The 333i and 325iS were distinct South African E30 specials: one a six-cylinder M3 alternative, the other a lighter racing-focused car with a standout 1993 record.

South Africa never got the E30 BMW M3, so BMW created local E30 performance cars to answer a different set of needs. The earlier 333i paired the E30 with a 3.2-litre six-cylinder engine; the later 325iS took a lighter, competition-focused route and built a notable racing record. They helped make South Africa’s E30 story exceptional—but neither can be declared universally better than the M3 without comparable tests.

Why didn’t South Africa get the E30 M3?

BMW Group Classic says the E30 M3 was never sold in South Africa. Local motorsport rules also shaped the alternatives: BMW M says the Group 1 regulations excluded the high-revving four-cylinder engine used by the M3. BMW Group South Africa leaders Bernd Pischetsrieder and Vic Doolan therefore conceived a South African-market E30 with a different engine and purpose.

The result was not one M3 replacement but two distinct specials, separated by several years. The 333i was the earlier big-engined car; the 325iS came later with weight reduction and racing ambitions. BMW Group Classic describes the 333i as a “small replacement” for the M3 in the South African market.

The 333i: an E30 built around a six-cylinder

A locally tailored engine package

BMW fitted a 3.2-litre inline-six from the E23 732i into the E30. The project involved BMW Motorsport GmbH and Alpina; BMW Group Classic notes their contributions included components related to aerodynamics, performance and suspension. The car was built at BMW’s Plant Rosslyn in 1985, and BMW Group Classic dates production to 1985–1986.

That engine swap brought a packaging compromise. BMW M says buyers had to choose between air conditioning and power steering to make room for the larger engine. The 333i’s character came from this combination of E30 chassis, six-cylinder installation and locally adapted equipment—not simply from having a larger engine.

What BMW says the 333i could do

BMW Group Classic lists the 333i’s 3,210 cc engine at 197 hp (145 kW) at 5,000 rpm and a top speed of 228 km/h. BMW M gives its torque as 285 Nm at 4,300 rpm and its 0–100 km/h time as 7.3 seconds. These are manufacturer-published figures, not results from a current independent or period head-to-head test.

Production totals also vary across BMW’s own accounts. BMW Group Classic lists 204 cars, BMW M says 210, and BMW South Africa’s 2016 refurbishment release describes approximately 200 built by 1987. The sources do not explain the discrepancy, so the exact total is unsettled.

The 325iS: a separate, lighter competition project

Two versions and a different recipe

The 325iS arrived in 1990 as a distinct South African E30 special. BMW South Africa’s restoration release describes two limited versions, with naturally aspirated 2.7-litre engines producing 145 kW or 155 kW. BMW M dates the increase from 145 kW (197 hp) initially to 155 kW (211 hp) after a 1991 upgrade.

BMW South Africa lists an iS body kit, 15-inch wheels, a full electric package, a 25% limited-slip differential, and M Sport suspension with Bilstein struts. BMW M describes the weight-saving measures: aluminium components, less sound insulation, a smaller battery and thinner instrument glass. For the 1990 325iS EVO II, BMW M gives a weight of 1,147 kg.

Its racing record belongs to the 325iS

BMW M says 517 South Africa-only 325iS cars were built and reports 20 victories in 24 races in 1993. It also records a win for the 325iS in the 1993 Castrol 9-Hour endurance race at Killarney near Cape Town. This is the 325iS’s competition story; it should not be attributed to the earlier 333i.

BMW M characterizes the 325iS as reaching the E30 M3’s performance domain. That is BMW’s retrospective description, not a period instrumented comparison under identical conditions. The available figures and race results establish a formidable local record, but not a universal performance verdict against the M3.

How the South African cars compare with the M3

The fairest comparison separates what each car was built to do. The E30 M3’s high-revving four-cylinder was unsuited to the local Group 1 rules as BMW M describes them. The 333i answered with displacement and six-cylinder torque; the 325iS emphasized lower weight and local competition. Market availability and racing history matter to the comparison, but they do not substitute for matched testing.

333i 3,210 cc inline-six; BMW Group Classic lists 197 hp (145 kW) at 5,000 rpm. BMW M lists 285 Nm at 4,300 rpm. BMW M lists 0–100 km/h in 7.3 seconds; BMW Group Classic lists 228 km/h top speed. 325iS Naturally aspirated 2.7-litre engine; BMW M lists 145 kW initially and 155 kW after the 1991 upgrade. BMW M lists 1,147 kg for the 1990 EVO II; it reports 20 wins in 24 races in 1993. South Africa-only model; BMW M says 517 were built. Competition-focused and distinct from the 333i.
E30 M3 BMW M’s account identifies its 2.3-litre high-revving four-cylinder; comparable output figures are not stated in the cited sources. Matched-condition weight, acceleration and top-speed figures are not stated in the cited sources. Not sold in South Africa, according to BMW Group Classic; its engine did not fit the local Group 1 rules as BMW M describes them.

BMW’s published evidence supports a strong case for the South African cars’ significance: the 333i adapted the E30 to local rules and tastes, while the 325iS delivered a documented run of competition success. “Outshone” is persuasive as a claim about local ingenuity, identity and racing achievement—not as proof that either car beat the M3 in every performance measure.

Modern Homage editions are tributes, not E30s

In 2025 BMW South Africa announced 33 units each of the 325iS Homage and 333i Homage, planned for online auction with proceeds directed to charities supported by the company. The 325iS Homage is based on the M240i xDrive and the 333i Homage on the M2. They are modern tributes, not the original E30 models, and their specifications should not be confused with those of the 1980s and 1990s cars.
