Snobootz was marketed as a tire-mounted alternative to snow chains, but its current availability is unverified. Historical coverage described its traction-pad design; today, drivers looking for winter traction should compare currently sold snow socks, chains, or cables against their tire size, vehicle manual, and local rules—not assume Snobootz is still for sale.
What was Snobootz?
Snobootz was a tire-mounted winter traction device intended as an alternative to conventional snow chains. The California Department of Transportation included it in a historical report discussing continuous-surface-cleat systems: Evaluation of Devices for Improving Traction Control in Winter Conditions. That reference documents the product’s place in the category; it does not establish that it is currently sold or supported.
New Atlas’s 2008 product coverage described Snobootz pads and installation, and said they were not intended for extended driving on dry pavement. The article also repeated a product claim that the pads had been “proven to last more than 200 miles” on dry pavement. That figure is a reported product claim, not an independently verified test result or a current durability guarantee. New Atlas’s 2008 coverage
Can you buy Snobootz today?
Current retail availability could not be verified. The historical Caltrans report and 2008 product article are not evidence of present stock, warranty coverage, or manufacturer support. Do not base a winter-driving plan on finding Snobootz unless you can confirm that a specific item is actually available and suitable for your vehicle.

What should you use instead?
Textile snow socks and vehicle-compatible chains or cables address a related need, but they are not proven direct replacements for Snobootz. Product choice depends on the vehicle, tire dimensions, road conditions, and whether the device is intended for travel or emergency recovery.
| Option | What to check | Evidence and limits |
|---|---|---|
| Textile snow socks | Exact tire dimensions, vehicle restrictions, and local acceptance | AutoSock’s U.S. site lists textile traction products, different models, and a three-step fitting process. Its legal and performance statements are the manufacturer’s; verify that they apply to your vehicle and jurisdiction. AutoSock U.S. |
| Chains or cables | Fit, wheel clearance, owner’s-manual restrictions, and road rules | Car and Driver’s comparison, updated December 1, 2025, discusses chains and alternatives and reports testing on snowy and icy terrain. Its findings concern the products tested, not Snobootz. Car and Driver’s winter-traction comparison |
| Recovery device | Whether you need to get unstuck rather than continue driving | Car and Driver describes TracGrabber as recovery equipment, not a device for traveling along snowy or icy roads. It is not a substitute for road-going traction equipment. Car and Driver’s winter-traction comparison |
How to choose a winter traction device
- Check the tire size. Read the size printed on the tire sidewall and select a product explicitly listed as compatible with that size. Do not assume that a model will fit because it looks similar.
- Read the owner’s manual. Check whether your vehicle permits chains, cables, or textile devices, and whether wheel-well clearance or axle-specific restrictions apply.
- Verify local requirements. Rules vary by road and jurisdiction. Confirm that the device you plan to carry is accepted where you expect to drive.
- Match the device to the task. Decide whether you need traction for continued travel on snow or ice, or equipment only to recover a vehicle that is stuck. Those are different uses.
- Consider conditions and usability. Compare intended surfaces and severity, installation difficulty, durability, traction, and possible noise, vibration, or changes in handling. Independent testing such as Car and Driver’s can inform category comparisons, but does not establish how Snobootz performs.
So, was Snobootz a viable alternative to snow chains?
Historically, Snobootz was presented as a chain alternative, and it appeared in Caltrans’ discussion of winter traction devices. The available evidence does not establish current availability or provide a current independent performance comparison with chains. For a present-day purchase, choose a product that is currently listed for your exact tire size, permitted by your vehicle manual, and accepted under the rules for your route.
