Neither a sedan nor a small SUV is automatically better for daily driving. The right choice depends on the specific vehicles and how you use them: compare fuel economy, passenger access, cargo fit, parking, safety ratings, and ownership costs for models with similar years, powertrains, and equipment.
Start with the vehicles you would actually buy
“Sedan” and “small SUV” describe broad body styles, not fixed levels of comfort, economy, safety, or practicality. A sedan may suit a driver who prefers a lower, car-like profile; a small SUV may suit someone who values a more upright seating position or a different kind of cargo access. Those are useful reasons to test each type, not guarantees that every model will deliver the same advantages.
For a fair comparison, shortlist vehicles from similar model years and price ranges, then match the engine, drivetrain, trim, and equipment as closely as possible. Regulatory categories can also differ from everyday labels: the EPA’s Automotive Trends data distinguishes sedan/wagon, car SUV, and truck SUV categories and covers every new light-duty vehicle model sold in the United States since 1975.
Compare fuel economy by exact configuration
There is no supported universal MPG winner between sedans and small SUVs. Fuel use varies with the vehicle, model year, engine, drivetrain, and equipment. Compare the EPA city, highway, and combined estimates for the exact configurations on your shortlist using the applicable model-year information in the EPA fuel-economy database. If you drive mostly in one kind of traffic, pay attention to the estimate that best reflects that route as well as the combined figure.

Check whether the cargo area works in practice
A cargo-volume figure alone cannot tell you whether your regular belongings will fit conveniently. The opening, floor shape, loading height, and seat-folding arrangement matter, as does how much passenger room remains when the rear seats are occupied. No matched cargo-data set for a representative sedan and small SUV is provided here, so a category-wide capacity claim would be misleading.
Bring the items you carry often—or measure them—and check how they load into each vehicle. Try a stroller, suitcase, sports equipment, or other relevant item with the seats in the configuration you normally use. Note whether you need to fold a seat, how easily the item clears the opening, and whether passengers still have usable space.

Test passenger access, comfort, and visibility on your routes
Seat height and door openings can affect how easy a vehicle is to enter and exit, but the result depends on the model and the people riding in it. If rear-seat access, child-seat installation, or regular passenger comfort matters, bring the usual passengers and any relevant child seat to the test drive. Check rear-seat room with the front seats set as they will be during everyday use, and assess ride comfort on roads similar to your commute.
Do not assume that every sedan is easier to park or that every small SUV provides better sightlines. Compare the actual vehicles in your garage, parking spaces, and regular route. Check dimensions, turning behavior, sightlines, and how confidently you can place the vehicle while parking or maneuvering.

Use model-year-specific safety information
Body style alone does not establish which vehicle will protect its occupants better. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) maintains separate small-car ratings and small-SUV ratings; results vary among tested vehicles in both groups. Look up the exact model year and check whether a rating or award applies only to particular trims or build dates.
IIHS says larger, heavier vehicles generally afford more occupant protection, while also posing greater danger to pedestrians and bicyclists. That is a general relationship—not a substitute for the exact vehicle’s crash-test results, safety equipment, and applicable ratings.

Make the decision with a short, repeatable checklist
- Choose comparable candidates. Match model year, price range, powertrain, drivetrain, and trim as closely as possible.
- Compare EPA estimates. Check city, highway, and combined fuel-economy figures for each exact configuration.
- Try your real cargo. Test the items you carry, including with passengers and seats arranged as they usually are.
- Bring your regular passengers. Evaluate entry, rear-seat room, child-seat use if relevant, and ride comfort.
- Drive and park on familiar routes. Judge sightlines, turning, and parking in the places you use regularly.
- Check the exact IIHS results. Confirm model year, trim or build-date conditions, and current ratings.
- Compare local costs. Get quotes and estimates for the specific vehicles rather than relying on body-style assumptions.
