Citric acid can help remove hard-water deposits, soap scum and mild rust stains—but it is a task-specific cleaner, not a universal household solution. Check the product label and the surface or appliance maker’s instructions before use, protect your eyes and skin, and never mix it with another cleaner.
What citric acid can clean
Citric-acid cleaners are used for selected mineral and soil deposits. Poison Control describes mild acid cleaners such as citric acid for hard-water spots, soap scum and mild rust stains; the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) also records uses that include calcium deposits and scale.
- Hard-water spots: A suitable product may help dissolve spots on glassware and other compatible surfaces. Check instructions first, especially for coated glass or appliances.
- Soap scum: Citric-acid cleaners are used on compatible sinks, bathtubs and shower doors. Follow the product’s directions for application and rinsing.
- Mild rust stains: Mild acid cleaners may help remove these stains; suitability depends on the surface and the product.
- Calcium deposits and scale: EPA documents these as uses for citric-acid products. The sources do not establish one dilution that is right for every job, so don’t assume a homemade recipe is safe or effective for all surfaces.
Choose a product for the job and surface
Decide whether you need a mineral-deposit cleaner, a soap-scum cleaner, routine surface cleaning or a product whose label specifically directs disinfection. Then check that the exact formulation is suitable for the surface or appliance, and follow its directions—including any required contact time and rinsing.
Citric acid powder or crystals may be an option for a compatible descaling task, but no universal concentration, recipe or all-material compatibility is established. A ready-to-use cleaner gives you product-specific directions; an ingredient by itself does not supply those instructions. Do not transfer a ready-to-use product’s claims or directions to loose citric acid or a homemade mixture.

Check materials before applying it
Acidic cleaners are not suitable for every surface. An EPA product label dated July 15, 2024, includes the warning, “Do not use on [unsealed -or- natural] marble -and/or- natural stone.” That is optional bracketed language on one product label, not a ruling for every citric-acid formulation. Consult your product’s label and the surface or appliance manufacturer’s care instructions before use.
Use it safely
- Protect eyes and skin. EPA characterizes citric acid as a severe eye irritant and moderate skin irritant. Avoid contact and follow the product’s protective-use directions.
- Never mix cleaners. An acid toilet-bowl cleaner mixed with bleach can release irritating chlorine fumes. Keep products separate and ventilate the area while cleaning.
- Follow the label. Use only as directed, including instructions about rinsing and contact time. Store cleaners away from children.
- Don’t equate “mild” or “natural” with risk-free. Formulation, concentration, contact time and surface all affect how a product should be used.
Cleaning is not the same as disinfection
Some EPA-listed products use citric acid as an active ingredient in registered disinfectant, sanitizer or fungicide formulations, sometimes alongside other active ingredients. A disinfecting claim applies only to the particular product and the directions on its label. Plain citric acid, a homemade solution or any cleaner that happens to contain citric acid should not be treated as a disinfectant unless its label supports that use.
