The #5 is a fully electric mid-size family SUV. At its European launch in March 2025, smart described it as the brand’s first vehicle in this class for Europe. The company’s CEO, Dirk Adelmann, called it smart’s “most spacious and versatile vehicle to date” in an August 2024 portfolio announcement. Those are the manufacturer’s descriptions; the cited release does not provide a directly comparable cargo-capacity figure.

The smart figures come from smart’s March 2026 European update announcement; Tesla’s figures are listed on its Germany Model Y page. The comparison is not fully trim-matched: the sources do not establish equivalent equipment, wheels, model year, test conditions or regional configurations. In particular, comparing the #5 Pro+ figure with the Model Y Long Range figure does not establish which has the better usable range in everyday driving.
What do the charging and space claims tell you?
Charging
smart says the #5 uses 800-volt technology from Pro+. That is a platform specification, not by itself a charging-time result. Tesla’s Germany page lists charging information by Model Y version, but the available figures do not provide a controlled, like-for-like charging comparison. To judge a practical difference, compare the exact local trims and independent charging tests using the same conditions.

Passenger and cargo room
smart presents the #5 as its most spacious model, but the cited material does not give a cargo figure that can be compared directly with the Model Y. Tesla’s Germany page does list cargo capacity by configuration. Without a matching smart measurement and a consistent measurement method, it would be misleading to name a space winner.
What is known about safety and software?
Safety rating
In a 2026 release reporting the 2025 assessment, smart says the #5 received a five-star Euro NCAP rating and a Best in Class large SUV award for 2025. smart’s account lists 88% for adult occupant protection, 93% for child occupant protection, 84% for vulnerable road user protection and 92% for safety assist. Software update
smart announced a European over-the-air update in March 2026 that adds easier access to driver-assistance settings, an upgraded voice assistant and expanded infotainment options. The announcement describes a rollout across European markets; it does not establish that every feature is available in every country or on every vehicle. Check the local smart specification and software version when evaluating a particular car. The announcement also does not substantiate the older claim that Plug & Charge under ISO 15118 would be available, so that feature should not be assumed.
Is the smart #5 available where you live?
smart announced German ordering from April 24, 2025, followed by rollouts in other European markets. That is historical launch timing, not confirmation of current inventory, delivery timing, pricing or incentives. Which SUV should you shortlist?
The #5 is worth comparing with the Model Y if you want a fully electric mid-size SUV and are considering smart’s European range. Choose based on the specific local trims, price, equipment, space and charging needs—not the headline WLTP number alone. The cited information establishes smart’s model lineup and manufacturer-published range, but it does not establish a real-world range, cargo-space or overall-performance winner over Tesla.
