Small, Cheap, and Weird: A History of the Microcar

Microcars answered postwar demand for economical transport with tiny, inventive designs. Explore the Isetta, Messerschmitt KR series, the category’s fuzzy boundaries and its brief heyday.

Postwar microcars turned shortages, repurposed factories and the need for affordable transport into a distinctive kind of vehicle: tiny, economical and often unconventional. Their heyday was brief, but the Isetta and Messerschmitt KR series show how differently manufacturers approached the same mobility problem.

What counts as a microcar?

There is no single boundary established here for the term “microcar.” The Bruce Weiner Microcar Museum describes its collection as focused primarily on vehicles from the late 1940s to before 1964, with engines of 700 cc or less and no more than two doors. That is the museum’s working scope, not a universal definition. Bruce Weiner Microcar Museum

The distinction matters because a car can belong to the broader history of economical transport without fitting a particular museum’s microcar category. The Citroën 2CV is a useful example: it was designed for accessible private transport, but the sources here do not settle whether it should be classified as a microcar.

Why did microcars appear after the war?

After World War II, Europe faced austerity and changing transport needs. Factories that had made military aircraft and equipment shifted toward civilian products, while consumers needed practical, economical ways to travel. The Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences describes tiny cars as a fitting innovation in that setting, naming Messerschmitt, BMW, Heinkel and Lambretta among the makers. It also notes that the United Kingdom, Japan and Australia tried producing microcars. Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences

MPC: 1:25 Scale Model Kit - 1967 Pontiac GTO - Blue, 85+ Parts - Skill Level 2, Authentic Vehicle Building Kit, Replica Classic Car, Age 14+
  • V8 POWER: The model features a 400 cubic inch V8 engine, reflecting the muscle and power that defined the GTO's reputation.
  • DETAILED SUSPENSION & EXHAUST: The kit incorporates separate rear suspension and exhaust detailing, adding to the realism of the model.
  • BUCKET SEATS & CONSOLE: The model's interior features bucket seats and a floor shifter with a console, capturing the iconic look and feel of the GTO.

  • CLEAR & COMPREHENSIVE INSTRUCTIONS: The included instructions are clear and user-friendly, making the kit accessible to modelers of different skill levels, from beginners to experienced hobbyists.

That context helps explain the category’s ingenuity, but it does not mean every model had the same origin or purpose. Some designs adapted expertise and industrial capacity to a new market; others began with a particular mobility need and then developed into production vehicles.

Two distinct approaches: the Isetta and the Messerschmitt KR

Iso’s design, built by BMW under license

The Isetta began as a design by the Italian firm Iso in the early 1950s. BMW acquired a license and body tooling in 1954, then built the Isetta 250 and 300. The Malamut Auto Museum Foundation reports that BMW produced 161,728 of those cars from 1956 to 1962; that figure is the foundation’s reported total. Malamut Auto Museum Foundation: BMW Isetta

Fend’s Kabinenroller and the bubble-car form

Fritz Fend developed the Kabinenroller concept, initially with a vehicle intended for disabled war veterans, before seeking a manufacturing partner. The Messerschmitt Museum of Flight says the KR 175 launched in March 1953 and the KR 200 followed in 1955. It reports that approximately 60,000 KR 200s were built. Messerschmitt Museum of Flight

The Isetta and KR series are both emblematic small cars, but they represent separate design and production stories: the Isetta’s Italian origins and licensed BMW production on one hand, and Fend’s Kabinenroller development followed by the Messerschmitt models on the other. Their reported production figures are model-specific, not a measure of the microcar market as a whole.

Where does the Citroën 2CV fit?

The 2CV belongs in the wider story of practical, low-cost motoring, even if its classification as a microcar is not settled by the available sources. Citroën’s history page says the car was presented at the Paris Motor Show and that five million examples were made for private transport through 1990. Citroën: 2CV history

That scale and extended production history make the 2CV a useful point of comparison, not proof that every economical small car fits a microcar definition. Under the Bruce Weiner museum’s scope, displacement, number of doors and period help mark a narrower collection boundary.

Why did the microcar moment pass?

The microcar trend had waned by the mid-1960s, according to the Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences. The sources establish that broad chronology, but do not provide a detailed account of the causes. It would be too simple to assign the decline to one competing model or to infer a market-wide production total from the figures for the Isetta and KR 200.

The cars remain a compact record of a particular postwar response: manufacturers and designers tried to make personal transport work with constrained resources, evolving factories and diverse mobility needs. For a deeper look at Britain’s branch of the story, Duncan Cameron’s British Microcars, 1947–2002 covers small three- and four-wheeled cars from late-1940s austerity through their gradual decline in the 1960s.
