A 30-gallon RV freshwater tank can store a substantial supply for a car-camping setup, but the listings reviewed here do not establish that any of these tanks is safe to carry loose in a passenger car or will fit a particular vehicle. Choose by dimensions, loaded weight, documented water use, fittings and support needs—not capacity alone—and plan how the tank will be secured and connected.
What size RV water tank can you use for car camping?
There is no universally suitable size: the right capacity depends on the space and payload available in your vehicle and on how you intend to use the water. The examples below are all 30-gallon tanks, but their shapes and listed empty weights vary considerably. A capacity label alone does not tell you whether a tank fits your cargo area or can be carried safely.
For context, 30 gallons of water weighs about 250 pounds before adding the tank or any fittings. That is a conversion of the stated capacity, not a vehicle-loading recommendation. Check your vehicle’s payload limits and account for passengers, luggage, the tank, water and mounting hardware together. The product listings do not provide vehicle-specific fit or transport guidance.

What to check before choosing a tank
Measure the usable space
Compare the tank’s outside dimensions with the actual space available, including the room needed to load it, route hoses and access fittings. The four examples show why capacity is not a proxy for shape: their listed dimensions range from 39 × 15 × 12.5 inches to 50 × 20 × 7 inches. The listings do not establish fit in any particular car.
Include the full load in your weight calculation
Start with the tank’s listed empty weight where one is given, then add the water and any fittings or mounting hardware. The two Ronco listings give different empty weights—30 pounds for the RVB140 and 16 pounds for the RV24W—despite both specifying 30-gallon capacity. The Trionic pages do not state empty weights. Do not treat an unlisted value as zero; ask the manufacturer or seller if it matters to your calculation.

Verify potable-water documentation for the exact tank
Material and intended-use claims are product-specific. National Tank Outlet says the two Ronco tanks use FDA-approved resin for potable-water storage; Trionic describes the B-2030-3 as suitable for potable water and the WH-2030 as suitable for potable water and RV use. Those statements do not establish that every holding tank, fitting, hose or completed installation is suitable for drinking water. Check documentation for the complete water-contact system and follow its cleaning and use instructions.
Match the fittings to the system
A blank tank offers flexibility in fitting placement, but it leaves the fitting plan—and the work of completing it—to the installer. The Trionic B-2030-3 ships without fittings. By contrast, the WH-2030 listing specifies two 1.5-inch FPT openings and two 0.5-inch FPT openings. Confirm that the openings and planned connections match the intended plumbing; neither listing establishes a universally compatible accessory or system.

Check support and pressure limits
Trionic says the B-2030-3 tank bottom should be fully supported and advises at least 12 inches of flexible hose to hose-barb fittings. The Ronco listings identify their tanks as not for pressurized use. Follow the exact manufacturer instructions for the model you select; do not infer that these tanks can serve as pressurized water systems.

They document RV or mobile-use water tanks, not a tested car-camping setup. None of the cited product pages proves that a tank is safe to transport loose in a passenger vehicle, specifies how to restrain it in a particular car, or confirms that it will fit a given cargo area. A tank’s portability description is not, by itself, evidence of safe vehicle transport.

Before using one in a car-camping system, resolve vehicle space and payload, secure mounting, tank support, plumbing connections and the intended water use. If those details are not covered in the product documentation, get guidance from the manufacturer or a qualified installer rather than assuming an RV tank is ready for car use.
