A defensible current list of ten comparable small cars is not established by the available model data, so this guide separates those four current examples from six clearly dated comparisons rather than presenting an invented ranking.
What counts as a small car with a powerful engine?
“Small” covers different shapes here: hatchbacks, a compact sedan, and, in the historical comparisons, a roadster and compact coupes. The cars are not directly interchangeable. Nor does horsepower alone show how quick a car feels: torque delivery, transmission, driven wheels, tires, weight and chassis setup all affect how power reaches the road.
The current figures below are U.S. manufacturer specifications for 2026 models. They describe rated engine output, not independent acceleration tests. Where the cited specifications do not establish another comparison detail, it is left out rather than inferred.

What the numbers say—and do not say
The GR Corolla’s 1.6-liter engine is rated at 300 hp, while the larger engines in these examples have different outputs and torque figures. Displacement by itself is therefore a poor shortcut for predicting power. These specifications do not establish a normalized winner for acceleration, value or everyday usability: comparable current prices, weights and independent acceleration tests are not available across all four examples.

The Type R’s listed cargo volume gives one concrete measure of utility, but it does not make every hatchback equally practical. The cited data also do not provide a like-for-like cargo or cabin comparison among these 2026 models.

These examples help put the current figures in context, but they are not a current top-six or a continuation of the 2026 comparison. Their model years and test context matter.

2013 Mazda MX-5 Miata
Mazda’s 2013 release rated the 2.0-liter engine at 167 hp at 7,000 rpm in manual-equipped models and 158 hp at 6,700 rpm in automatic-equipped versions. Both were listed at 140 lb-ft at 5,000 rpm. Those are 2013 specifications, not a claim about a current Miata. Mazda’s 2013 release.
Miata, GR86/BRZ, Civic Si and Golf GTI in a 2023 comparison
An Associated Press article from 2023 summarizing Edmunds cited comparison examples rated at 181 hp for a Miata, 228 hp for the Toyota GR86 and Subaru BRZ, 200 hp for a Honda Civic Si, and 241 hp for a Golf GTI. These are figures in that article-era comparison, not a uniform set of current model-year specifications.

That AP report attributed 0–60 mph times of 6.4 seconds for the Miata, 6 seconds for the GR86/BRZ, and 7.2 seconds for the Civic Si to Edmunds testing. These are reported test results, not manufacturer claims or 2026 tests. The article described the GR86 and BRZ as corporate twins with more passenger and cargo room than the Miata, while noting tight rear seats and a firm ride. AP’s 2023 comparison.
How to choose among compact performance cars
- Look beyond peak horsepower. Torque and the rpm range where it is available help describe engine delivery; transmission and driven wheels affect how that output is used.
- Match the body style to the job. A hatchback, sedan, roadster and coupe offer different passenger and cargo compromises. The Type R’s published cargo capacity is useful evidence for that model, not a proxy for every car on this list.
- Check the specific year and fuel guidance. Manufacturer figures change by model year, and Hyundai’s stated premium-fuel requirement applies to achieving the Elantra N’s estimated maximum horsepower.
- Separate ratings from test results. Manufacturer horsepower figures and independently tested acceleration answer different questions; the older Edmunds times reported by AP should not be compared as if they were tests of the 2026 cars.
- Compare prices with their terms. Toyota’s listed GR Corolla MSRP excludes the specified processing and handling fee, while Volkswagen’s starting MSRP is time-sensitive. The figures are not a complete out-the-door price comparison.
Why this is not a ranked list of ten current cars
A useful ten-car ranking would need a consistent definition of “small,” matched model years and comparable data such as price, weight, transmission, drivetrain and acceleration. The cited current evidence supports four 2026 U.S. examples, not ten cars on that common basis. Treating older Miata, GR86/BRZ, Civic Si or GTI figures as current would blur model years and test conditions rather than make the comparison more complete.
