For 2026, the Mazda MX-5 Miata and Toyota GR86 have listed starting prices below that ceiling; the Subaru BRZ does not. The used market adds choices such as the Chevrolet Camaro, Dodge Challenger and Ford Mustang, though published averages are not local asking prices or out-the-door totals.
Best new sports cars under $35,000
These are listed starting prices, not guaranteed transaction prices. The 2025 figures below are historical model-year prices; check current inventory and pricing before shopping.
| Model and year | Listed starting price | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| 2026 Mazda MX-5 Miata | $31,665 (Car and Driver) | Two-seat, rear-wheel-drive roadster; available with a manual or automatic transmission in the cited 2025 account. |
| 2026 Toyota GR86 | $32,695 (Car and Driver) | Rear-wheel-drive coupe; manual and automatic transmissions are available in the cited 2025 comparison. |
| 2025 Ford Mustang EcoBoost coupe | $33,515 (Edmunds) | Edmunds lists 315 hp and 350 lb-ft; its 5.6-second 0–60 mph result is for the 10-speed automatic. |
| 2025 Mazda MX-5 Miata | $30,715 (Edmunds) | 181 hp, rear-wheel drive and manual or automatic transmission. Edmunds recorded 6.4 seconds from 0–60 mph for a manual test car. |
| 2025 Toyota GR86 | $31,135 (Edmunds) | 228-hp shared powertrain with the BRZ; manual versions reach 60 mph in about six seconds, according to Edmunds. |
| 2025 Subaru BRZ | $32,380 (Edmunds) | 228 hp, rear-wheel drive and manual or automatic transmission, as with the GR86 in Edmunds’ comparison. |
The current-year cutoff changes the answer for the BRZ: Car and Driver lists the 2026 model from $37,055, above the budget, even though Edmunds’ historical 2025 starting price was below it. A new 2025 BRZ may still appear in remaining inventory, but availability and price depend on dealer stock.

Used sports cars with published averages below $35,000
iSeeCars’ 2026 ranking analyzes one-to-six-year-old used sports cars in the $30,000–$35,000 range. These are averages in that analysis, not promises about a particular car’s asking price, condition or total cost.
| Example model year and body style | Average used price |
|---|---|
| 2025 Mazda MX-5 Miata | $33,896 |
| 2021 Chevrolet Camaro coupe | $33,769 |
| 2025 Subaru BRZ | $33,204 |
| 2022 Dodge Challenger | $34,317 |
| 2024 Ford Mustang convertible | $32,680 |
| 2025 Toyota GR86 | $34,731 |
| 2025 Mazda MX-5 Miata RF | $34,892 |
The Miata RF is the retractable-fastback version, distinct from the soft-top roadster. The used-price examples show how model year and body style affect the budget; they do not establish that every example is available locally at the average. iSeeCars’ 2026 used sports-car ranking and its model-price examples provide the underlying figures.

Which type fits your driving?
Choose the Miata for an open-top, two-seat roadster
The Miata prioritizes low weight, nimble handling and the experience of top-down driving over power or passenger capacity. Edmunds characterizes it as playful and notes its quick steering and easy-to-lower top. Its 181-hp figure and tested acceleration belong to the 2025 model-year account, not every Miata configuration or year.
Choose the GR86 or BRZ for a coupe
The GR86 and BRZ share a 228-hp four-cylinder, rear-wheel drive and a choice of six-speed manual or automatic in Edmunds’ 2025 comparison. Edmunds reports about six seconds to 60 mph for manual examples. Compared with the Miata, the coupes offer more passenger and cargo space, but their rear seats are tight and are often more useful for cargo. Edmunds describes them as suitable for learning car control; that is an editorial characterization, not a guarantee of how any driver will perform.

Choose the Mustang EcoBoost for more power and a larger car
The 2025 EcoBoost coupe stands out among the cited new options for its 315 hp and 350 lb-ft. Its 5.6-second 0–60 mph result applies specifically to the 10-speed automatic tested by Edmunds. If you are considering a used Mustang convertible, the iSeeCars average is for a 2024 example and should not be treated as the price of a new EcoBoost coupe.
Consider a used Camaro or Challenger if you want a larger coupe
The cited used averages cover a 2021 Camaro coupe and 2022 Challenger. The figures establish that examples of those model years fell within iSeeCars’ analyzed price band; they do not establish comparable acceleration, powertrain, trim or condition. Compare the exact engine and trim on each listing rather than assuming every car with the same model name performs alike.

How to make the $35,000 budget work
A listed starting MSRP or used-market average is not the same as the final cost. Taxes, registration, dealer fees and any immediate maintenance can push a car beyond your ceiling. For a used car, treat the price as only one part of the decision.
- Compare the same model year and trim when evaluating price or performance.
- Check mileage, title and vehicle history, accident damage, maintenance records, modifications, and tire and brake condition.
- Arrange a pre-purchase inspection by an independent mechanic. An OBD-II code reader can surface some diagnostic codes, but it cannot establish a car’s overall mechanical condition or replace an inspection.
- Keep a maintenance reserve instead of spending the full budget on the purchase price.
- Verify the specific car’s price, equipment and availability in your area; averages and starting prices do not include your local fees or necessarily match dealer inventory.
Why this is a shortlist, not ten equivalent cars
The available evidence supports several worthwhile choices, but not ten distinct sports cars with comparable current performance data. The strongest documented new choices are the Miata, GR86 and Mustang EcoBoost, with the BRZ below budget only for the cited 2025 starting price or as a used car. The Camaro, Challenger and Mustang convertible enter the picture through used-price averages. The GTI appears in the 2025 Edmunds comparison at a $33,640 starting MSRP with 241 hp and a 5.9-second 0–60 mph time, but it is a performance hatchback rather than a conventional sports car, so it is not counted as one here.
