Slate currently lists the Blank Slate Truck at $24,950 before a $1,450 destination charge, taxes, registration, documentation fees, governmental fees, and options. That makes the advertised vehicle price less than $25,000, but the subtotal before taxes and other charges is already $26,400. The company says the $300 preorder deposit is applied to the purchase price.

Slate Truck timeline: debut versus preorder
| Date | What happened |
|---|---|
| April 24, 2025 | Slate unveiled its first vehicle, a compact two-door battery-electric pickup. |
| June 24, 2026 | Slate said preorders were open, updated several specifications, and announced an expected first-delivery window of Q4 2026. |
| August 12, 2026 | The latest supplied company information still described the vehicle as preproduction, with deliveries projected rather than confirmed. |
Slate said in June 2026 that it had more than 180,000 reservation holders. That figure should not be confused with the preorder program. A reservation represents earlier customer interest; a preorder requires the $300 payment and is intended to secure a delivery window.
What is the Slate Truck?
The Slate Truck is a small, rear-wheel-drive electric pickup designed around a deliberately basic starting configuration. Every vehicle begins as a two-seat pickup called the Blank Slate. Owners can keep it as a truck, configure it as a five-seat SUV, or convert it later with Slate’s accessory system.
The original reveal emphasized features that are unusual in a new vehicle:
- Steel wheels instead of expensive styled wheels
- Crank windows
- Physical HVAC controls
- A front trunk, or frunk
- A five-foot cargo bed
- No conventional integrated touchscreen infotainment system
- A phone-mount-based approach to navigation and other technology
- Owner-installed personalization, accessories, and vehicle wraps
Slate says the strategy is to reduce hardware and software complexity, then let owners add equipment as their needs change. Its June 2026 materials claim the truck uses fewer than half the parts of a typical truck. That could make some components simpler, but it does not yet prove lower total ownership costs, better reliability, cheaper insurance, or easier repairs in real-world use.
Price, preorder terms, and delivery expectations
| Item | Current information |
|---|---|
| Blank Slate Truck price | $24,950 |
| Destination charge | $1,450 |
| Preorder deposit | $300, credited toward the purchase price |
| SUV configurations | Squareback and Fastback start at $29,950, according to Slate |
| Expected first deliveries | Q4 2026, according to Slate’s June 2026 announcement |
| Availability in the FAQ | Late 2026 |
The $24,950 figure should be treated as an advertised starting price, not an out-the-door price. Slate says it excludes destination, taxes, title, registration, governmental charges, documentation fees, and optional equipment. The company’s more specific Q4 2026 delivery statement is still a projection, not confirmation that retail deliveries had begun.
Slate Truck specifications
Slate’s current materials list the following specifications and capabilities:
| Specification | Current figure or description |
|---|---|
| Powertrain | Rear-wheel drive |
| Power output | 150 kW in the original reveal |
| Projected range | 205 miles |
| Towing capacity | 2,000 pounds |
| Payload capacity | 1,550 pounds |
| Length | 174.6 inches |
| Width | 70.6 inches |
| Height | 68 inches |
| Wheelbase | 108.9 inches |
| Interior volume | 58 cubic feet |
| Cargo bed | 35.1 cubic feet, five feet long |
| Frunk | Seven cubic feet |
Range: 205 miles is still a projection
The 205-mile figure is an increase over the 150-mile estimate Slate gave at the 2025 unveiling. The original announcement also described a 52.7-kWh battery and 150 kW of power, plus a planned optional 84.3-kWh battery with a projected 240-mile range.

Those original battery and range figures were preproduction targets and were explicitly subject to change. Slate’s current materials highlight the 205-mile projected range, but do not turn it into an EPA-certified result. Actual range will depend on temperature, speed, driving style, terrain, accessories, charging conditions, and battery condition. There is not yet an independent range test in the supplied evidence.
Towing and payload
Slate’s June 2026 update lists 2,000 pounds of towing capacity and 1,550 pounds of payload capacity. Those figures supersede the 1,400-pound payload claim associated with the original 2025 reveal for purposes of a current overview.
They are useful headline numbers, but buyers should wait for final production documentation before treating them as validated working limits. A truck’s practical ability to tow or carry depends on the final equipment, hitch configuration, tongue weight, passengers, cargo, and applicable vehicle ratings.
Pickup, SUV, and accessory configurations
The Blank Slate can remain a two-seat pickup or be converted into a five-seat SUV. Slate currently describes two SUV shapes:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Squareback: the more upright five-seat SUV configuration.
- Fastback: a five-seat configuration with a more sloped rear profile.
Slate says both start at $29,950. It also lists an Open Air Kit and a Cargo Kit with covered storage. The company’s June 2026 release says its Marketplace offers more than 200 accessories, with more than 80 percent priced below $500. Examples include roof racks, stereos, zip-off seat covers, and light covers.
Slate also says more than 100 wrap colors will be available at launch and that full vehicle wraps will cost less than $500. The company described more than 100 accessories at the 2025 reveal and more than 200 in the later update; the later figure is the current company claim.
This modular approach is the truck’s central differentiator. Someone could begin with a basic two-seat vehicle, add rear seats for family use, install covered storage for work, or change the exterior appearance without buying a different vehicle. The trade-off is that the final price and utility depend heavily on which kits and accessories the buyer selects.
Charging the Slate Truck
Slate says every vehicle includes a charging cable. Its charging guidance covers household Level 1 charging, Level 2 charging from an appliance-style outlet, and public DC fast charging.

| Charging method | Slate’s estimate | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Level 1 | About 2–5 miles of range per hour | Uses a household outlet and is best suited to low daily mileage or overnight charging. |
| Level 2 | About 25–35 miles of range per hour | Uses a higher-power appliance-style outlet; a full charge is estimated at roughly five to eight hours. |
| Public fast charging | About 20–80 percent in approximately 30 minutes | Useful for longer trips, although charging speed varies with temperature, battery state, station power, and the vehicle’s final production specifications. |
The vehicle uses a standard NACS charging port. Slate said in an October 2025 announcement that customers would have access to Tesla’s Supercharger network, and its current charging information refers to thousands of public chargers, including Tesla Superchargers.
Because the Slate uses NACS, do not assume you need a separate NACS EV charging adapter. The correct accessory depends on the charger, connector, and final vehicle compatibility. Verify the exact charging setup before buying an adapter; an unnecessary adapter adds cost and another component to store.
Slate says its app is not required to drive the vehicle. The company intends for the app to show charge status, battery health, and charging-station locations, but says the app is scheduled to launch later in 2026. It should therefore be treated as a planned feature, not a currently available ownership tool.
Do you need home charging installation?
Level 1 charging may be sufficient for a driver with a short commute and several hours parked at home. Level 2 is more practical for recovering substantial daily mileage, but it may require an appropriate circuit, outlet, or hardwired charger. Slate identifies Treehouse as its home-charging installation partner and directs shoppers toward a quote flow. Anyone considering home EV charger installation should confirm the service’s availability, price, electrical requirements, and commercial terms before booking.
Slate’s included cable means a buyer should not automatically purchase another one. A backup or replacement EV charging cable could be useful, but check the connector type, amperage, cable length, and intended Level 1 or Level 2 use against the final truck and the outlet or charger. A generic cable should not be treated as official Slate equipment or as a required purchase.
Safety equipment and crash-test status
Slate says the vehicle is designed to achieve a five-star USNCAP crash rating. That wording matters: it describes an engineering goal, not a published completed crash-test result.
The listed safety and driver-assistance equipment includes:
- Traction control
- Electronic stability control
- Forward-collision warning
- Automatic emergency braking
- Airbags
- Backup camera
- Pedestrian identification
- Automatic high beams
- Remote keyless entry
Until an independent crash-test result is published, buyers should not describe the Slate as a five-star vehicle. The appropriate description is that Slate is designing it to achieve that rating.

Service, repairability, and warranty coverage
Slate markets the truck as DIY-friendly. The company says owners will have access to free manuals and diagnostics, along with a forthcoming Slate U resource hub. It also says owners may use independent mechanics or Slate-certified RepairPal locations.
Slate’s June 2026 release cited more than 3,000 RepairPal shops nationwide and more than 100 service centers capable of high-voltage EV service. Those numbers describe Slate’s stated service strategy, not proof that every location can perform every repair on the production truck. Before buying, confirm that a nearby RepairPal service location can handle the specific high-voltage, drivetrain, body, and warranty work you may need.
The current service page lists:
- Battery and powertrain: 10 years or 110,000 miles
- Bumper-to-bumper limited warranty: four years or 50,000 miles
- Roadside assistance: four years or 50,000 miles
Coverage terms, exclusions, transferability, service procedures, and regional availability still deserve careful review in the final warranty documents. A repair-friendly design can reduce frustration, but there is not yet a long-term owner record showing how easy, inexpensive, or durable repairs will be in practice.
For drivers who want to carry basic gear, a generic truck bed organizer or cargo net may also be useful with the five-foot bed. That is an optional hauling accessory, not Slate equipment or a required part of the truck. Check the bed dimensions and tie-down layout once production specifications are final before purchasing.

Where the Slate Truck will be made
Slate says its vehicles are designed in California and Michigan, engineered in Michigan, and assembled in Indiana. The company identifies a reindustrialized factory in Warsaw, Indiana, as its planned production site.
Slate says it plans to invest nearly $400 million at the facility and create more than 2,000 jobs. These are company plans and announcements, not independently verified evidence that full-scale production has begun or that customer deliveries are on schedule.
What remains unproven
The Slate’s low advertised price and modular design are compelling, but nearly every important ownership question still needs production evidence.
- Real-world range: The 205-mile number is projected, not EPA-certified in the supplied materials.
- Winter and highway performance: No independent range or road test was provided.
- Crash performance: The five-star USNCAP result is a design objective, not a completed rating.
- Reliability: There is no delivered-owner history establishing durability or failure rates.
- Repair costs: DIY manuals and a service network do not establish actual parts prices or labor savings.
- Production timing: Q4 2026 is an expected delivery window, not a guarantee.
- Final specifications: Battery options, equipment, accessory pricing, and capabilities may change before production.
- Total purchase cost: The advertised price excludes destination, taxes, registration, documentation, options, and other charges.
Slate’s linked media first-drive coverage may provide impressions of early vehicles or prototypes, but it is not a substitute for an independent production-vehicle review or a customer reliability record.

Should you preorder the Slate Truck?
The Slate makes the most sense for a buyer who values a compact electric pickup, rear-wheel drive, simple physical controls, a low advertised entry price, and the ability to change the vehicle’s body style or accessories over time. It could also appeal to owners who prefer using their own phone rather than paying for a large built-in infotainment system.
Waiting is the more cautious choice if you need a truck immediately, require a confirmed towing or payload capability, depend on a specific winter range, want independently verified crash-test results, or cannot tolerate delivery and specification changes. The most important questions will be answered only when production vehicles are tested and delivered.
Before placing a preorder, confirm the refundable or nonrefundable status of the deposit, the applicable delivery window, the final configuration price, the destination charge, the availability of the SUV and cargo kits, the warranty exclusions, and the location of qualified high-voltage service.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is April 24 the Slate Truck’s launch date?
No. Slate unveiled the truck on April 24, 2025. The June 24, 2026 update opened preorders and said first deliveries were expected in Q4 2026.
How much does the Slate Truck cost?
Slate lists the Blank Slate Truck at $24,950, plus a $1,450 destination charge. Taxes, title, registration, documentation fees, governmental fees, and options are extra. The advertised vehicle price is therefore not the final out-the-door price.
What is the Slate Truck’s range?
Slate currently projects 205 miles, but that is not an official EPA-estimated range in the supplied materials. The earlier 150-mile estimate and planned 240-mile long-range figure were preproduction targets.
Can the Slate Truck become an SUV?
Yes. Every Slate starts as a two-seat Blank Slate pickup and can be ordered or later converted into a five-seat Squareback or Fastback SUV. Slate also lists Open Air and Cargo Kits.
How does the Slate Truck charge?
Slate says the truck can use Level 1, Level 2, and public fast charging. It estimates 25–35 miles of range per hour on Level 2, a full Level 2 charge in about five to eight hours, and a 20–80 percent fast charge in about 30 minutes. Actual times will depend on final specifications and charging conditions.
Is the Slate Truck proven to be safe and reliable?
Not yet. Slate says it is designed to achieve a five-star USNCAP rating, but that is a target rather than a published completed crash-test result. Independent road-test, range, reliability, and owner data are also not yet available in the supplied research.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Slate’s affordable EV truck debuted on April 24, 2025; it did not launch on April 24, 2026. As of the latest supplied information, preorders are open at an advertised $24,950 before destination and other charges, with first deliveries projected for Q4 2026. The 205-mile range, five-star safety result, production schedule, and long-term reliability remain unverified, so the Slate is an interesting preproduction proposition—not yet a proven inexpensive EV truck.
