Verdict: The 2025 Can-Am Outlander 850 DPS is the best all-around version for most buyers, but the name covers two mechanically different families. The 500/700 is a value-oriented utility and trail ATV on the G3L platform; the 850/1000R is the larger G3 family and receives the major 2025 redesign.
The 850 DPS offers the most persuasive balance of 82 hp, power steering, useful trail equipment, and manageable cost. The 1000R is the performance choice, especially in XT-P form, while the X mr is built around mud and the MAX models are intended for regular two-up riding.
Quick verdict
The 2025 Can-Am Outlander is not one uniform ATV. It is two mechanically different families: the lower-priced 500/700 on Can-Am’s G3L platform, and the substantially redesigned 850/1000R on the larger G3 platform. For most buyers who want one machine for trail riding, property work, hauling, and occasional technical terrain, the Outlander 850 DPS is the best-balanced choice. It has 82 hp, power steering, selectable drive modes, 26-inch tires, a full skid plate, and the principal chassis improvements of the larger redesign without making the 1000R’s extra horsepower or premium suspension the center of the purchase.
The 1000R is the right answer for riders who genuinely want very strong acceleration, rapid hill-climbing ability, or a performance-focused XT-P or mud-specific X mr. The 500 or 700 makes more sense for lower-cost property maintenance and moderate trail use. A MAX should be selected when carrying a passenger is a primary use case, not merely an occasional possibility.

What is new for 2025?
The major 2025 change applies to the Outlander 850 and 1000R. Can-Am describes this as a new-generation package rather than a minor equipment update. The redesign combines a new 999 cc V-twin, a revised continuously variable transmission, updated chassis and suspension geometry, more integrated storage, and expanded electronic controls.
New 999 cc V-twin
The 850 and 1000R share the new 999 cc DOHC V-twin architecture, but they are tuned for different output levels. Can-Am lists:
- Outlander 850: 82 hp and 66 lb-ft of torque.
- Outlander 1000R: 101 hp and 69 lb-ft of torque.
The 1000R’s 101-hp rating is the headline number. Its advantage is most obvious when accelerating hard, climbing quickly, carrying momentum through open terrain, or riding with a heavy load. The 850 is not slow or inadequate; it is simply less forceful when both engines are used back-to-back.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Both engines use intelligent throttle control, selectable engine modes, and intelligent engine braking. These controls give the rider more choice over how aggressively the ATV responds and how much engine braking is available when descending or easing off the throttle. Their usefulness depends on terrain and riding style; they are not a replacement for selecting the correct gear range, maintaining control, or descending safely.
Revised CVT and pDrive clutch
Can-Am adds its pDrive primary clutch to the 850 and 1000R, along with a revised CVT ratio and dual-roller secondary clutch. The stated aims are smoother shifting, stronger low-end response, improved durability, and longer belt life. The last two are manufacturer claims, not established long-term results from an independent durability study. There is not enough evidence to call the 2025 redesign definitively reliable or unreliable.
New chassis geometry
The larger Outlander family uses arched double-A-arms and revised suspension geometry intended to improve obstacle approach and ditch crossing. Can-Am’s overview material lists approximately 10.8 inches of front travel and 12 inches of rear travel for the 850/1000R family, although shock design, wheel and tire size, braking hardware, sway-bar equipment, and exact specifications vary by package.
This change matters at least as much as the engine output. Independent first-ride testers found the 1000R stable and composed at speed, with controlled cornering and a comfortable ride over longer trail sessions. The 1000R is therefore not simply a bigger engine bolted into the old Outlander chassis.

Selected 850 and 1000R packages add an enclosed front drop-down compartment with approximately 8 gallons of capacity, a removable enclosed rear compartment of approximately 3 gallons, and phone storage with USB charging. The redesign also increases integration with Can-Am’s LinQ accessory system.
Display equipment is trim-dependent. The 500/700 uses a 4.5-inch digital display. Selected 850/1000R models have a 7.6-inch digital display, while certain configurations offer a 10.25-inch touchscreen with navigation and drive-mode functions. Can-Am says BRP GO! navigation can work through a connected phone, while some configurations include built-in GPS that does not require a phone connection. Do not assume that every 2025 Outlander has the touchscreen, built-in GPS, or the same storage compartments.

Which 2025 Outlander should you buy?
Outlander 500 or 700: the sensible utility entry point
The 500/700 family uses the G3L platform and a 650 cc single-cylinder Rotax ACE engine. Can-Am rates the 500 at 40 hp and the 700 at 50 hp. Both are aimed at buyers who need an ATV for property maintenance, light hauling, casual trail riding, and general outdoor chores without paying for the performance of the large-bore models.
Standard family specifications include selectable 2WD and 4WD, Visco-Lok auto-locking front differential capability, steel wheels, a 4.5-inch digital display, a full skid plate, 1,830 pounds of towing capacity, and a six-month BRP limited warranty. The published rack ratings are 120 pounds at the front and 240 pounds at the rear. Those figures are manufacturer specifications, not a reason to exceed the limit of the particular trim, hitch, terrain, or local regulations.
The 700 is the better choice if the price difference is acceptable and the ATV will regularly climb, tow, or carry equipment. The 500 is a reasonable value choice for flatter property, lighter work, and recreational use where maximum acceleration is not important. Neither should be judged by the 850/1000R’s chassis, storage, output, or touchscreen equipment: those are separate configurations and, in the case of the larger family, a different platform.
Outlander 850: the strong standard model
The standard 850 is the most convincing choice for buyers who want the redesigned large-family chassis but do not need a premium performance package. Its 82 hp and 66 lb-ft are sufficient for serious trail use, hauling, and steep terrain, while its 26-inch tires, full skid plate, Visco-Lok front differential, 7.6-inch display, and 1,830-pound towing rating give it useful working equipment.
Independent first-ride impressions describe the 850 as capable and composed. The difference from the 1000R becomes apparent during rapid climbs and hard acceleration, not during ordinary property work or relaxed trail riding. If the ATV will spend most of its time at moderate speeds, the 850 leaves more room in the budget for a winch, storage, protective equipment, or a trailer.
Outlander DPS 850 or 1000R: the best all-around package
DPS adds Can-Am’s Tri-Mode Dynamic Power Steering, Visco-Lok QE, 26-inch tires on 12-inch aluminum wheels, intelligent engine braking, selectable drive modes, and the 7.6-inch digital display. Power steering is more than a comfort feature: it reduces effort during slow technical maneuvering, repeated steering corrections, loaded-rack work, and long rides.
Recommended Free Tools
The DPS 850 is my default recommendation for the broadest group of buyers. It combines the revised chassis and useful equipment with enough engine performance for nearly every normal recreational and utility task. Select the DPS 1000R instead when the extra output will be used regularly rather than merely admired on the specification sheet.
XT-P 1000R: the performance specialist
The XT-P 1000R is the performance-oriented flagship. Its equipment includes Showa gas shocks, four-disc braking, a Visco-4Lok front differential, a 3,500-pound winch with synthetic rope, a relocated bumper, 30-inch XPS Swamp King XL mud tires, 14-inch aluminum wheels, a dedicated mud rack, and mud-oriented footrests.
That equipment explains the price premium and also limits the package’s general-purpose value. The XT-P is attractive to a rider who will use its suspension, braking, tires, and differential in aggressive terrain. It is less compelling if the ATV will mainly perform low-speed chores on a property, because the buyer is paying for hardware that may rarely be exploited.
ATV Connection praised the XT-P’s braking, adjustable ride character, display, storage, handguards, and all-day comfort. RideApart emphasized its acceleration and cornering ability, describing it as capable of behaving more like a sport ATV while retaining utility equipment. These are independent tester impressions rather than standardized instrumented measurements, but they consistently support the XT-P’s performance positioning.

X mr 1000R: choose it for deep mud
The X mr is the mud-specific Outlander. Its dedicated equipment includes 30-inch XPS Swamp King XL mud tires, Showa shocks, a 3,500-pound synthetic-rope winch, a relocated bumper, mud footrests, and a dedicated rear mud rack.
Those tires and accessories are useful in deep mud but are not automatically an advantage on every trail. Large mud tires can make steering, ride feel, ground pressure, and general trail manners different from a conventional utility-trail setup. Buy the X mr because mud is a primary riding environment, not because it is simply the most expensive-looking version.
MAX models: for regular passenger use
Outlander MAX versions add a second-rider configuration. Can-Am publishes separate MAX packages and specifications, and dimensions, suspension calibration, weight, and equipment vary by model. Choose a MAX when carrying a passenger is a core requirement.
A passenger seat should not be treated as an occasional accessory substitute for a properly designed two-up ATV. The rider and passenger should follow the operator’s guide, use appropriate protective equipment, and ride only in conditions suitable for the vehicle and passenger configuration.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsHow the 2025 Outlander performs
Acceleration and hill climbing
The 1000R is exceptionally powerful for this class. Independent first-ride reports describe strong acceleration, rapid hill climbing, and substantial reserve power. On an open trail or steep climb, the 1000R can make the 850 feel deliberately tuned by comparison.
That does not make the 850 a poor performer. Its 82 hp is ample for ordinary trail riding, hauling, and technical work. The 1000R’s advantage is most useful when the rider wants to accelerate hard, maintain momentum, or overcome a demanding climb with less need to build speed gradually.
There is no single trustworthy top-speed or 0-to-60 figure to quote for every 2025 Outlander trim. The available reviews provide subjective acceleration impressions rather than one controlled, independently repeatable test across all configurations. Tire size, rider weight, surface, gearing, conditions, and electronic mode would also affect the result.
Handling and suspension
The redesigned chassis is the strongest part of the 2025 update. Testers reported confidence at speed, better cornering control, and a surprisingly civilized ride from the XT-P. Revised geometry, arched double-A-arms, and upgraded shocks on the XT-P help the ATV stay composed instead of feeling like an engine-first machine.
Do not generalize the XT-P ride to every Outlander. The base 850, DPS versions, XT, XT-P, X mr, and MAX models use different combinations of shocks, tires, wheels, brakes, sway bars, bodywork, and passenger-oriented calibration. A dealer ride or inspection should identify the exact package before you draw conclusions about ride quality.
Utility work
The Outlander remains a utility ATV despite the 1000R’s performance credentials. Can-Am lists 1,830 pounds of towing capacity for the 850/1000R family, and the 500/700 page lists the same figure. Always use the exact specification for the vehicle you are buying and stay within the limitations of the hitch, terrain, load, and local law.

The strongest utility case comes from combining the racks, selectable drive system, front differential, winch capability, enclosed storage, and accessory ecosystem. The official Can-Am accessory catalog describes plow systems as a combination of a mounting kit, push frame, and blade, with related wear blades, fairleads, pulley kits, and winch components. That modular approach is useful, but it also means a low advertised accessory price may represent only one piece of the complete setup.
For recovery and trail preparedness, an ATV recovery strap is a more sensible starting point than buying performance accessories indiscriminately. Add recovery equipment only after confirming its working load, attachment points, and compatibility with the ATV and the way it will be used.
Technology, storage, and everyday ergonomics
The 2025 Outlander offers more technology than the basic ATV mission requires, but the equipment can be worthwhile for riders who spend long days on unfamiliar trails. The simple 4.5-inch display on the 500/700 provides core vehicle information without adding much complexity. The 7.6-inch display on selected larger models adds a more substantial information interface, while the 10.25-inch touchscreen and navigation functions are package-dependent.
Phone-connected BRP GO! navigation can be useful when the rider already carries a suitable phone and has planned for connectivity. Built-in GPS on selected configurations is more self-contained. Confirm which system is fitted to the actual VIN or build sheet; the model name alone does not establish that the ATV has the touchscreen or built-in GPS.
The enclosed front and removable rear storage compartments are meaningful practical upgrades. They protect small equipment better than an exposed rack, and phone storage with USB charging addresses a common trail-riding need. The trade-off is additional system complexity and the need to verify replacement parts and accessory fitment for the exact G3 or G3L platform.
Before ordering Can-Am LinQ accessories, compare the model year, platform, engine family, rack design, wheel and tire package, and trim-specific mounting points. A product that fits an Outlander nameplate may not fit every 2025 Outlander.

Ownership, warranty, and first-year considerations
BRP lists a six-month limited factory warranty for the U.S. 500/700 and 850/1000R pages. B.E.S.T. extended service terms are available for up to 36 months. Warranty duration and coverage should be confirmed in the purchase documents for the specific market and configuration rather than assumed from a dealer advertisement.
The 850/1000R is a first-year major redesign. That is not evidence of a defect, but it is a reason to be methodical before taking delivery. Ask the dealer to:
- Run the VIN through the current recall and service-campaign system.
- Confirm that required software updates and setup procedures have been completed.
- Verify the exact display, storage, winch, differential, shock, tire, and brake equipment included in the advertised trim.
- Confirm that accessories ordered for the ATV match the G3 or G3L platform and the particular rack, bumper, tire, and suspension configuration.
- Explain the warranty start date, available B.E.S.T. terms, maintenance schedule, and parts support.
No controlled long-term durability test, fuel-economy test, universal ownership-cost study, or independent reliability rate was found for every 2025 Outlander trim. First-ride testing can assess performance and ergonomics, but it cannot establish belt life, engine longevity, or total maintenance cost over years of use.

This does not mean that every 2025 Outlander is recalled. Before riding, buying a used unit, or accepting leftover inventory, check the VIN through BRP’s recall resources and the current CPSC recall database. Give particular attention to the 500/700 Pro and Max Pro configurations named in the notice, and ask the dealer to document the result.
All-terrain vehicles can be hazardous to operate. Read the operator’s guide, obtain proper training, wear a helmet and eye protection, use gloves and suitable boots, and ride at a speed appropriate for the terrain and your experience. Do not treat this review as encouragement to jump, race, ride on public roads where prohibited, or operate without the required protective equipment. An ATV helmet and eye protection should be considered basic equipment, not an optional accessory.
Winter work, recovery, and useful accessories
If snow removal is the job, treat the Can-Am Outlander plow mount as one part of a system rather than the whole purchase. Can-Am’s own catalog identifies a mounting kit, push frame, and blade, along with wear blades, fairleads, pulley kits, and winch-related components. Confirm whether the selected Outlander has the required winch and mounting hardware, and verify compatibility by model year, G3 or G3L platform, engine, and trim before buying.
Other practical ownership purchases may include an ATV winch, synthetic winch rope, a tire-repair kit, a battery tender, a loading ramp, trailer tie-downs, handguards, skid-plate hardware, and weatherproof storage. These should be selected around the ATV’s actual use. A mud tire, premium winch, or large storage box is not automatically an upgrade for a rider whose main tasks are mowing, hauling firewood, or exploring maintained trails.
2025 Can-Am Outlander versus its own trim range
The Outlander’s main competitive advantage is breadth. The 500/700 offers a lower-cost path into property work and moderate trail riding, while the 850/1000R family combines utility features with output that reaches 101 hp. The revised chassis, premium suspension availability, factory winch packages, integrated storage, and LinQ compatibility give Can-Am a strong factory-accessory story.
The drawbacks are the complexity of the range and the price of the most desirable packages. A review impression formed on the XT-P should not be presented as the experience of a base 850 or a 500. Likewise, the six-month base warranty is a material ownership consideration, especially when comparing current trim- and market-specific warranty documents from competing manufacturers.
Final buying recommendations
- Buy the Outlander 500 for the lowest-cost route to moderate property maintenance and casual trail use.
- Buy the Outlander 700 when you want the value family but expect more frequent climbing, hauling, or stronger acceleration.
- Buy the Outlander 850 DPS for the best overall balance of capability, steering assistance, equipment, and price. This is the recommended default.
- Buy the 1000R DPS when the additional power will be used regularly in open trails, climbs, or demanding loads.
- Buy the XT-P 1000R for high-speed trail performance, premium shocks, stronger braking equipment, and a more aggressive factory setup.
- Buy the X mr 1000R when deep mud is the primary environment, not simply because it is the most specialized model.
- Buy a MAX when a passenger is a normal part of the riding plan and you want a purpose-built two-up configuration.
The 2025 Can-Am Outlander is most convincing when chosen by use case rather than horsepower. The 850 DPS delivers the broadest range of capability without turning every ride into a performance-package purchase. The 1000R and its XT-P and X mr variants are excellent answers to specific demands, while the 500/700 remains the more rational choice when purchase price and straightforward utility matter most.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which 2025 Can-Am Outlander is the best overall choice?
The Outlander 850 DPS is the best default choice for most buyers. It combines 82 hp, power steering, selectable drive modes, 26-inch tires, a full skid plate, and the redesigned large-family chassis without the cost and specialization of the 1000R XT-P.
What is the difference between the 2025 Outlander 850 and 1000R?
The 1000R makes 101 hp and 69 lb-ft, while the 850 produces 82 hp and 66 lb-ft. The difference is most noticeable during hard acceleration, rapid hill climbs, and open-terrain riding. The 850 remains capable for ordinary trail riding and utility work.
Do all 2025 Can-Am Outlanders have the same chassis and technology?
No. The 2025 range includes the G3L-based 500/700 family and the larger, redesigned G3-based 850/1000R family. Storage, displays, navigation, shocks, tires, brakes, differentials, and other equipment vary by package.
Is every 2025 Can-Am Outlander affected by the speed-limiter recall?
The supplied CPSC recall information concerns certain 2025 and 2026 Outlander 500 or 700 Pro and Max Pro ATVs equipped with Speed Limiter Mode. Check the vehicle identification number through BRP and CPSC recall resources before riding or buying a used or leftover unit.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Choose the 2025 Outlander 850 DPS for the best all-around balance. Move to the 1000R DPS or XT-P only if you will use the extra power and hardware, choose the X mr for deep mud, and choose the 500/700 for lower-cost property work. Verify the exact trim, accessories, warranty, VIN recall status, and first-year service updates before purchase.
