Slate tops 180,000 reservations as U.S. EV truck market cools

Slate’s reservation list passed 180,000 even as U.S. EV sales and electric-pickup momentum weakened. The number signals interest, not guaranteed deliveries.

Slate Auto says more than 180,000 people held reservations for its electric pickup by June 24, 2026. That is a striking level of early interest for an inexpensive, customizable truck arriving as the U.S. electric-vehicle market weakens. It is not a sales forecast: the reservations were refundable, and Slate has not disclosed how many became paid, non-refundable preorders.

What Slate’s reservation numbers actually show

TechCrunch reported on December 16, 2025, that Slate had collected more than 150,000 refundable reservations. The company had passed 100,000 in May 2025, so the list grew by roughly 50% in the following seven months. Slate’s June 24, 2026 launch release then said more than 180,000 reservation holders were ready for the vehicle.

Date Published milestone What it means
May 2025 More than 100,000 reservations Slate’s earlier milestone, as reported by TechCrunch
December 16, 2025 More than 150,000 refundable reservations TechCrunch report; reservations were not orders
June 24, 2026 More than 180,000 reservation holders Slate launch-release figure; the reservation window closed that day

A reservation is an expression of interest, not a vehicle allocation or a delivered truck. Slate’s purchase guidance says reservation holders receive priority timing and may later place a preorder with a $300 non-refundable deposit. Because the original $50 reservation fee is credited, Slate describes that as $250 after the credit. The company has not published the conversion rate from refundable reservations to those preorders.

Why the milestone matters in a cooling EV market

Slate’s growth stands out because the broader U.S. market has become less forgiving for electric pickups. Ford said in a December 2025 Securities and Exchange Commission filing that it canceled three planned EVs and ended production of the current-generation F-150 Lightning after determining that market conditions were challenging.

The U.S. Energy Information Administration’s 2026 analysis of 2025 data found that 2025 was the first year in which annual U.S. battery-electric vehicle sales and market share declined. The decline continued into 2026. That does not mean consumers have abandoned every EV; it means a reservation surge for a new truck needs to be separated from the industry’s overall sales trend.

Slate is pursuing a different proposition from a large, heavily equipped electric pickup: a relatively low entry price, a simple cabin, a pickup body that can become an SUV, and a broad catalog of owner-installed accessories. Those choices may explain why the reservation list grew even while established manufacturers pulled back.

Accessories More than 175 planned accessories; more than 80 priced below $500 Axios reported the plan; availability and final pricing can change

Is it really a truck under $25,000?

The announced starting price is below $25,000, but it is not an out-the-door price. Buyers will need to add any accessories or conversion equipment they choose, along with taxes, registration, delivery charges and other fees. Slate could also change specifications or pricing before production begins.

The low base price therefore describes the entry configuration, not every version a buyer might want. The company’s customization strategy makes that distinction especially important: a stereo, roof rack, seat system or other add-on can move the final transaction well above the headline figure.

How the pickup-to-SUV conversion and accessories fit together

Slate describes a two-seat pickup that can be converted into a five-seat SUV. That flexibility is central to the product rather than a minor trim option. It lets one vehicle serve open-bed hauling, daily commuting and occasional passenger duty, but buyers should confirm exactly which components are included in the chosen configuration and which are paid accessories.

Axios reported that Slate planned more than 175 accessories, including roof racks, stereos, zip-off seat covers and light covers, with more than 80 listed below $500. The breadth of the catalog supports the company’s customizable approach, while the accessory prices mean the ownership budget cannot be judged from the base vehicle alone.

What the phone-first cabin means

Slate intentionally leaves out a built-in infotainment system. Its FAQ makes the owner’s phone the primary controller for functions such as navigation, audio and over-the-air updates. That can reduce hardware cost and let owners use a familiar device, but it also makes phone mounting, charging and cellular coverage part of the everyday driving experience.

A hands-free car phone mount is a logical generic accessory to consider, yet final mounting hardware and production-interior compatibility should be verified before buying a specific model. Slate’s available guidance does not establish that the truck will support a particular Apple CarPlay or Android projection implementation, so buyers should not assume one until the company confirms it.

When deliveries are expected

Slate says first deliveries are expected in late 2026, and its June 24, 2026 launch release specifies an expected fourth-quarter start. Reaching that target requires more than a large reservation list: Slate must finalize the vehicle, begin production, hold the announced price and range estimates, and deliver an owner-support system capable of handling a new EV at scale.

The RepairPal relationship is a useful part of that support plan. Slate says the network includes more than 3,000 shops, with over 100 service centers equipped for high-voltage EV work. Those are coverage claims, not proof that every reservation holder will have a convenient nearby location or that service capacity will remain sufficient after deliveries begin.

How to judge Slate against other electric pickups

Reservation totals should not be used as a substitute for deliveries, revenue or market share. A meaningful comparison with another EV pickup should examine:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Price before options, taxes and fees
  • Usable range and whether the figure is an estimate or an official rating
  • Body-style flexibility and the equipment required for conversion
  • Payload and towing specifications
  • Charging speed and charging-network access
  • Delivery timing and production status
  • Repair-network coverage, especially high-voltage service
  • Accessory pricing and what is included in the base vehicle
  • How transparently refundable reservations become paid orders

On those measures, Slate has published a compelling concept and strong early interest, but several production-critical details remain more important than the reservation headline.

What reservation holders should watch next

  1. Preorder terms: Check the exact timing, refund rules and non-refundable deposit requirement before converting a reservation.
  2. Final specifications: Confirm the production battery, official range rating, charging information and the equipment needed for the SUV conversion.
  3. Real transaction price: Add desired accessories, taxes and fees to the $24,950 starting figure.
  4. Phone integration: Verify supported devices, mounting points, charging provisions and any confirmed projection standards.
  5. Service access: Identify a nearby qualified repair location and ask how high-voltage work will be handled in your area.
  6. Delivery updates: Treat the fourth-quarter 2026 target as a company expectation that still depends on production execution.
