For a first upgrade, buy a model- and year-specific handlebar kit or a compliant LED auxiliary-light kit—not a complete engine or frame conversion. Choose according to how you ride, verify fitment and local rules, install one system at a time, and test every control and electrical function before returning to the road.
Start with the motorcycle’s job
Customization works best when it solves a riding problem. Harley-Davidson groups common changes around fit, function, style, performance and audio, and notes that many owners learn what works by riding, then refining the bike.

- Commuting: prioritize comfortable contact points, conspicuity lighting and weather-resistant storage.
- Touring: consider luggage, a carrier or rack, ergonomic controls and auxiliary lighting.
- Passenger use: check passenger clearance, load ratings and secure mounting before adding storage or comfort accessories.
- Back-road handling: treat suspension, brakes, wheels and tyres as engineering changes requiring careful setup and testing.
- Show styling: plan appearance changes only after confirming that controls, lighting, heat management and legal equipment remain compliant.
Set a total budget that includes mounting hardware, wiring, replacement cables or brake lines, tools, professional labor and any inspection. Record the motorcycle’s exact make, model, engine variant and model year before ordering; a part that fits one year or trim may not fit another.

| Kit category | What it changes | Checks before purchase | Beginner suitability |
|---|---|---|---|
| Handlebars and controls | Reach, rise, pullback and riding posture | Model/year fit, cable and brake-line length, control clearance, steering range and local height limits | Good first project when the kit is model-specific and control lines are correctly sized |
| LED auxiliary lights | Visibility and the motorcycle’s visual outline | Beam pattern, claimed brightness, mounting position, harness, weather resistance, approval marking and local lighting law | Good first project when the complete kit is compliant and wired through a protected circuit |
| Luggage and carriers | Carrying capacity for commuting or touring | Load rating, passenger clearance, waterproofing, rack strength, mounting hardware and detachability | Usually straightforward, but loading and mounting still require inspection |
| Exhaust and engine-stage parts | Sound, appearance and possible performance changes | Noise and emissions compliance, heat shielding, tuning needs, fit, warranty effects and inspection rules | Usually a later project because compliance and tuning risks are higher |
| Brakes, suspension, wheels and tyres | Stopping, ride, geometry and grip | Load and speed ratings, clearances, geometry, brake performance and installer competence | Not a casual first modification; fit and test as safety-critical work |
| Audio and electronics | Speakers, amplifiers and accessory functions | Power draw, waterproofing, fuse protection, routing and battery capacity | Suitable after basic electrical skills and a safe wiring plan are established |
Pick the first kit with a decision process
- Define the problem. If your wrists, shoulders or knees are uncomfortable, investigate a handlebar and control kit. If other road users have difficulty seeing you, investigate compliant auxiliary lighting. If you need carrying capacity, measure the luggage space and passenger area first.
- Confirm compatibility. Use the manufacturer’s fitment list for the exact model year and variant. Check whether the kit includes brackets, fasteners, wiring, relays, fuses, cables and replacement brake lines, or whether those are separate purchases.
- Map the complete installation. Plan where wires, hoses and cables will run at full left and right steering lock, through suspension travel and around hot exhaust parts. A kit that looks inexpensive can become costly if it needs new lines or fabrication.
- Check approval and inspection requirements. Lighting, handlebars, exhausts and major chassis parts can be regulated differently by location. Resolve this before installation, not after the motorcycle fails an inspection.
- Change one system at a time. Keeping the number of variables low makes it easier to identify a clearance, handling, electrical or noise problem.
Handlebar and control kits
Handlebars alter reach, rise, pullback and seating position. Compare the new bar with your current hand position, then verify that the throttle, clutch, switch wiring and brake hose can move freely without tension. Turn the bars fully in both directions and compress the suspension if the design routes lines near moving parts.

Fitment checklist
- Exact model, year and trim listed by the kit maker.
- Clamp diameter and riser compatibility.
- Control-hole pattern and room for switches, mirrors and reservoirs.
- Correct cable, hose and wire lengths, with no sharp bends or rubbing.
- Unrestricted steering lock and adequate clearance from the tank, fairing and instruments.
- Compliance with any local handlebar-height or control-position rule.
After installation, confirm that the front brake lever feels normal, the throttle snaps closed from every steering position, the clutch fully disengages and the steering moves smoothly without binding. If any line needs force to reach its connection, stop and obtain the correctly sized part.
LED auxiliary lights
Auxiliary lights can make a motorcycle’s outline more noticeable, but legality depends on installation and jurisdiction. SAAQ’s visibility guidance, updated March 3, 2026, states that headlights and auxiliary lights must comply with Quebec’s Highway Safety Code and Motor Vehicle Safety Regulations.

- Beam pattern: choose a pattern appropriate to conspicuity or road illumination; a high output claim does not establish legal approval.
- Mounting location: ensure the lamps do not obscure the headlamp, indicators, plate or reflectors and remain secure over bumps.
- Electrical protection: use the supplied harness, fuse or relay where specified, protect wires from abrasion and seal weather-exposed connections.
- Marking and approval: look for the approval or type marking required in your jurisdiction rather than relying only on a seller’s “road legal” label.
- Switching: place the control where it cannot be operated accidentally and where required modes remain legal.
Before riding at night, test the beam aim, indicator visibility, high- and low-beam operation, switch behavior and charging-system response. Never aim an auxiliary beam into oncoming traffic.

Luggage, racks and carriers
Luggage is a function upgrade, but the motorcycle’s handling changes as mass is added or moved higher and farther rearward. Check the rack and bag load ratings, keep the passenger’s legs and grab points clear, and use all supplied fasteners and supports. Waterproofing claims may apply only when covers, liners or closures are correctly fitted. A detachable rack is convenient, but its locking mechanism still needs a pre-ride security check.

Exhaust and engine-stage parts
Exhaust and engine modifications can affect noise, emissions, heat and fueling. Harley-Davidson advises owners to remain within sound and emissions requirements. Confirm whether an exhaust has the required approval for your road use, whether heat shields are included, and whether the manufacturer specifies tuning or fuel-control changes. A louder sound or advertised power gain is not evidence that the motorcycle remains compliant or safe.
Because these changes can trigger inspection, warranty and tuning issues, they are generally better as a later project after fit, visibility, storage and protection needs are settled.

Brakes, suspension, wheels and tyres
The Institute of the Motor Industry’s “Fit and test motorcycle enhancements and accessories” standard, approved in 2021, treats suspension, brakes, wheels and tyres as enhancement work that must be fitted and tested. Match tyre load and speed ratings to the motorcycle, verify wheel and rotor clearances, and confirm that suspension changes do not alter geometry beyond the intended design. Brake work demands correct torque, fluid handling, bleeding and a controlled test; use a qualified installer when you lack the equipment or experience.

- Prepare the work area. Stabilize the motorcycle, provide adequate lighting and ventilation, keep ignition sources away from fuel, and gather the service information and torque specifications.
- Use personal protective equipment. The IMI standard calls for suitable PPE and a safe motorcycle and work area before fitting and testing.
- Inventory the kit. Match every bracket, fastener, spacer, connector, fuse and instruction to the parts list before removing the original component.
- Protect critical systems. Route wiring and hoses away from heat, steering pinch points, sharp edges, chains and moving suspension parts. Secure them without crushing insulation or restricting travel.
- Complete static checks. Test steering lock, throttle return, clutch operation, brake lever travel, lamp functions, fastener security and fluid leaks with the engine off.
- Perform a controlled test. Start in a private, low-speed area. Check braking, steering, vibration, warning lights, charging behavior and the accessory’s operation, then recheck fasteners and routing.
- Document the change. Keep the instructions, receipts, approval information, wiring diagram and photographs. These records can help with future maintenance, inspection or registration.

| Jurisdiction or authority | Relevant requirement |
|---|---|
| United States — NHTSA | NHTSA lists federal motorcycle standards covering brake hoses, lamps and reflective devices, mirrors, brake fluid, tyres, rims, brake systems and controls/displays. Each motorcycle needs a unique VIN and manufacturer certification that it meets applicable safety standards. |
| United States — kit interpretation | NHTSA interpretation NHT92-5.35 (1992) says an assemblage shipped with all parts necessary for completion, including the power source, is treated as a motor vehicle for federal regulatory purposes; regulated equipment must be certified to applicable standards. |
| United Kingdom — DVLA | Kit-built motorcycles must meet road-vehicle regulations. DVLA asks for a vehicle-parts statement, type-approval evidence, receipts and build plans, and states that all kit-built vehicles require type approval. |
| Quebec — SAAQ | A modified motorcycle is one whose key component has been changed or replaced by a part that does not meet the model manufacturer’s standards. SAAQ requires a mechanical inspection before such a motorcycle is used on the road. |
Changing a bolt-on accessory is not automatically the same as building a kit motorcycle, but a major frame, powertrain or safety-system change can move the project into a different approval category. Ask the authority before dismantling the original motorcycle.
Shopping checklist for a first kit
- Exact make, model, year and trim recorded.
- Written fitment confirmation from the kit manufacturer.
- Complete parts list, including hardware, cables, hoses, brackets and electrical protection.
- Installation instructions and required torque values.
- Approval or type-marking information for regulated lighting, exhaust or safety equipment.
- Load, speed and clearance specifications where applicable.
- Budget for professional installation, inspection and replacement consumables.
- Receipts and documentation stored for future service or registration.
For most beginners, a model-specific motorcycle handlebar kit addresses comfort with a manageable scope, while a compliant motorcycle LED auxiliary lights kit addresses conspicuity. Either is a better starting point than combining exhaust, engine, suspension and frame changes in one project.
