Slate Auto is targeting the U.S. entry-level EV market with a configurable, two-seat electric pickup that starts at $24,950 before destination and other charges. Its first deliveries are targeted for Q4 2026, but the vehicle remains in preproduction, so its specifications, pricing and availability could change. The company’s low-cost approach—minimal built-in equipment, plus add-ons owners can choose over time—could stand out if Slate can deliver the truck at scale. That outcome has not yet been established.
What Slate Auto is building
Slate emerged from stealth in April 2025 after several years of development, with Jeff Bezos among its backers, according to TechCrunch. Its first vehicle, the Slate Truck, is a small, rear-wheel-drive electric pickup with two seats. Slate also plans SUV configurations based on the same vehicle: Squareback and Fastback.
The product strategy is to keep the base vehicle relatively simple and let owners add equipment as their preferences or budgets change. Slate omits a built-in infotainment system and emphasizes physical controls and a marketplace of accessories. That makes the advertised base price only one part of the proposition: buyers will also need to decide which features they want included from the start and what they might add later.
Slate Truck prices and what the deposit means
Slate lists the Blank Slate pickup at $24,950, before destination, taxes and other fees. Its FAQ lists a $1,450 destination charge, bringing the subtotal to $26,400 before taxes and other charges. Squareback and Fastback SUV configurations start at $29,950, according to Slate’s June 24, 2026 announcement. The available figures do not establish a fully equipped or out-the-door price.

Slate’s current preorder terms call for a $300 non-refundable deposit credited toward the eventual purchase. People who previously placed a $50 reservation pay $250 to preorder. Paying the deposit secures a place in Slate’s process; it is not delivery, independent validation of the vehicle, or a guarantee that specifications and availability will remain unchanged. Slate’s preorder page describes the vehicle as preproduction and says details may change.
Range, capability and dimensions: Slate’s current claims
Slate’s June 2026 announcement gives the truck a manufacturer-estimated range of 205 miles, a 2,000-pound towing capacity and a 1,550-pound payload. The preorder page says the range estimate is based on an EPA test cycle and that an official EPA estimated range will be provided when available. These are company figures for a preproduction vehicle, not independent test results or a completed EPA rating.
Slate’s FAQ lists a rear-mounted 135 kW motor and these exterior dimensions:

How Slate compares with lower-priced EVs
In June 24, 2026 launch coverage, TechCrunch cited the Chevrolet Bolt at around $29,000 and the Nissan Leaf at around $32,000, and reported that Ford was teasing a $30,000 electric truck for 2027. Those are point-in-time comparisons, not a current survey of transaction prices; the figures do not by themselves establish equivalent equipment, fees or availability. See TechCrunch’s launch coverage for that context.
A fair comparison should account for more than the starting price. Buyers should line up:
- Price after destination, taxes, fees and any applicable incentives
- Vehicle format and passenger capacity
- Range, and whether it is independently tested or a manufacturer estimate
- Standard equipment versus paid accessories
- Payload, towing and other utility needs
- Whether the vehicle is available to buy and when delivery is expected
Slate’s small two-seat pickup and planned SUV configurations are not direct substitutes for every passenger EV. The value depends on whether the format, usable range and included equipment fit the buyer’s needs—not simply on the lowest advertised starting figure.
Can Slate disrupt the EV market?
Slate’s thesis is straightforward: a simpler, lower-priced base vehicle could reach buyers priced out of newer vehicles, while modular accessories let owners add features over time. The combination is distinctive on paper, but the word “disrupt” describes an outcome Slate still has to demonstrate. The key tests are whether it can meet its delivery target, produce vehicles consistently, deliver the stated specifications and support owners after sale.
That execution risk matters in a market where EV startups have faced bankruptcies, launch failures and pivots. TechCrunch’s April 2026 explainer described Slate as still pursuing production for late 2026. Slate’s first deliveries are a target for Q4 2026, not confirmation that customer vehicles have shipped.
