The project has a stated solar capacity of 12.37 megawatts (MW), with projected annual generation of 20.8 million kilowatt-hours (kWh). Those figures describe capacity and estimated energy—not independently verified operating output.
How large is the Magic Mountain solar carport?
The 12.37 MW solar installation covers the park’s main guest parking lot, with project details also describing canopies over employee parking. Six Flags announced the project on April 25, 2023, naming Solar Optimum and DSD Renewables as partners. The company said the project was designed to offset 100% of the park’s energy use. Energy Optimum’s project page lists coverage for 3,544 guest parking spaces and 771 employee spaces, along with LED lighting and security systems. It gives inconsistent canopy-area figures, so the project’s size is more reliably described by its solar capacity and covered-space counts than by a square-footage total. How much electricity is it expected to produce?
Six Flags projected annual generation of 20.8 million kWh. The announcement also projected 517.89 million kWh over 25 years. These are estimates, not reported meter readings; the 25-year figure should not be read as measured lifetime production. Is it operating now?
Yes, according to the project partners. Solar Optimum and Six Flags Magic Mountain reported that the installation was fully energized on October 1, 2026. The park’s post described a 12.37 MW array, a battery system rated at 2 MW/8 MWh, and 100 EV charging stations. What does the battery do, and how large is it?
The battery stores energy for later use, helping manage when solar electricity is available to the park. Six Flags’ 2023 announcement specified 1.958 MW of battery power and 7,886.3 kWh of storage capacity. Later partner descriptions round those specifications to 2 MW and 8 MWh. Why is it described as one of the largest in the US?
In 2023, Six Flags called the development California’s largest single-site commercial renewable-energy project and the largest solar project allocated toward a for-profit organization in the United States. In its 2026 post, Solar Optimum used different language, calling it California’s largest solar carport installation and one of the largest commercial carport projects in the US. Six Flags named Solar Optimum and DSD Renewables as partners when it announced the project. RECOM Technologies later said it partnered with Solar Optimum to supply RECOM Panther bifacial, half-cut photovoltaic modules, and announced a 25-year product warranty for those modules.
