Mercedes-Benz announced the updated Mercedes-Maybach S-Class on July 7, 2026, describing it as the most extensive update in the model’s history. The changes span a larger illuminated grille, a redesigned digital cabin, rear-seat features and region-specific electrified powertrains. Ordering and equipment vary by market, so the announcement date is not a universal on-sale date.
What changed in the 2026 Maybach S-Class?
Exterior: a larger grille and revised lighting
Mercedes-Benz says the Maybach grille is 20 percent larger than before and has an illuminated surround, with the Maybach name illuminated within it. Rose-gold accents appear in the headlamps. Forged-wheel designs are also part of the update. The standing Mercedes star and C-pillar emblem can be illuminated where offered; lighting availability is subject to local rules and equipment. Mercedes-Benz Austria, for example, notes that some lighting features are unavailable there. Cabin: updated screens and software
The Maybach debuts MB.OS, Mercedes-Benz’s operating system, alongside fourth-generation MBUX with Maybach-specific graphics. In the US specification described by the manufacturer, the MBUX Superscreen includes a 14.4-inch central display and a 12.3-inch passenger display, alongside a separate 12.3-inch driver display. Rear passengers have two 13.1-inch screens. These are US-market specifications, not a guarantee of standard equipment in every country.
Mercedes-Benz also announces over-the-air software updates and a virtual assistant integrating partner AI services. Its CITY PRO point-to-point feature is described as arriving later through an update. Those software-dependent capabilities may depend on market, digital-extra or subscription conditions, and rollout timing; the announcement does not establish that every feature is active on every delivered car.

Rear cabin: comfort-focused equipment

The Austrian material also lists optional silver-plated Robbe & Berking champagne flutes with dedicated holders. These are options or market-specific features rather than a universal equipment list.

The lineup differs by region. Mercedes-Benz USA lists two US-market versions:

European regional material describes newly electrified six- and eight-cylinder engines. Switzerland’s announcement names the S 680, S 580 and S 580 e with EQ hybrid technology. These regional descriptions should not be combined into one worldwide engine range: confirm the models and specifications available in your country with a local Mercedes-Maybach retailer. US power figures and specifications come from Mercedes-Benz USA; Swiss variants are listed by Mercedes-Benz Switzerland.
When did orders open, and when does production begin?
There is no single global launch date in the available announcements. Mercedes-Benz says ordering opened in the first European markets on March 25, 2026, with more markets to follow. The Swiss page gives that date for Switzerland. Series production began in April 2026 at the Sindelfingen plant, in Factory 56. The US newsroom announcement is dated July 7, 2026. These dates refer to different market and production milestones, not a universal retail or delivery date.

Calling this the most extensive update in the model’s history is Mercedes-Benz’s characterization. The specific changes documented by the company include the larger grille and lighting details, MB.OS and updated MBUX, rear-cabin equipment and market-specific electrified powertrains. The launch material does not provide independent comparative testing or evidence for a head-to-head class ranking.
Markus Bauer, Head of Mercedes-Maybach at Mercedes-Benz AG, said the car reflects the brand’s emphasis on comfort, detail and exclusivity, and described its position in the top-end segment. That is an executive’s view, not an independent assessment.
