Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Design a body control network around the functions the vehicle must perform—not around a bus chosen in isolation. Map signals, timing, diagnostics, ECU allocation, topology, power states, gateway boundaries, and validation needs before fixing the network. LIN, CAN/CAN FD, and Ethernet serve different requirements; no one choice settles the rest of the system design.
1. Allocate functions and define communication requirements first
Start with the body functions—such as doors, windows, mirrors, lighting, or climate controls—and identify which ECUs provide them, which ECUs consume their data, and what each exchange requires. This turns a feature list into an architecture that can be reviewed before wiring and software interfaces become difficult to change.
Build a communication matrix
For each signal or service, record its source and destination, timing needs, diagnostic requirements, and the vehicle states in which it is needed. Include fault and startup behavior where relevant: a signal that is only useful while parked may have different availability needs from one required during driving.
- Map each function to its producing and consuming ECUs.
- Specify update timing and any determinism or latency needs.
- Identify diagnostics, error reporting, and dependencies between functions.
- Record which vehicle states require the communication to be available.
AUTOSAR describes a top-down approach that begins with a vehicle system description, allocates functions to ECUs, and develops a communication matrix. Standardized interfaces and coordination across ECU and supplier boundaries help manage E/E complexity and software lifecycle changes. The allocation should therefore be an explicit engineering artifact, not an assumption embedded in a bus diagram.

2. Match the network to the application
Choose a network by comparing application needs, timing, wiring constraints, node support, diagnostics, power behavior, and integration with adjacent domains. LIN is intended for low-speed, low-cost control clusters; ISO identifies door modules and air-conditioning systems as examples. CAN/CAN FD guidance addresses automotive ECU physical layers and system design. Ethernet has a role where an architecture needs higher-capacity links or inter-domain communication, but the ISO 21111 series overview does not establish a universal data-rate threshold for choosing it.
| Technology | What the cited material establishes | Questions to resolve in the project |
|---|---|---|
| LIN | Low-speed control use, including door modules and air-conditioning; scheduled frame communication and controlled wake/sleep. The cited range is 1–20 kbit/s, a standard capability rather than a recommendation for every function. | Does the schedule meet the function’s timing needs? Are the participating ECUs and transceivers supported, and do wake/sleep behavior and diagnostics fit the vehicle architecture? |
| CAN / CAN FD | Automotive physical-layer and system-design guidance covers timing, transceivers, cabling, and signal improvement. The material does not specify a single rate suitable for all body networks. | What bit timing, physical interface, topology, cable, node support, and validation plan are required for this implementation? |
| In-vehicle Ethernet | The ISO 21111 series overview addresses the scope of in-vehicle Ethernet and identifies conformance and interoperability test methods; it does not set a universal selection threshold. | Does the architecture need the capacity or domain connectivity this link provides? Confirm the applicable ECU support, integration boundaries, and test scope. |
Do not treat a technology label as a complete design. A suitable network still needs a defined topology, ECU and transceiver support, integration interfaces, and vehicle-level requirements. Compare timing determinism, diagnostics, low-power behavior, toolchain availability, EMC effort, and safety and cybersecurity needs alongside nominal data capacity.

3. Engineer topology, wiring, and transceivers together
For high-speed CAN, CAN in Automation (CiA) recommends a line topology terminated at both ends with 120-ohm resistors matched to the cable impedance. That is a physical-layer design recommendation, not a substitute for checking the actual network layout and components.
Close the physical-layer design as a system
CAN FD implementation also involves bit timing, physical-interface and transceiver selection, and cable electrical and mechanical properties. CiA guidance addresses signal-improvement options and cable test methods; topology-induced ringing can become significant at higher data rates. Evaluate these as interacting design choices rather than independently selecting a protocol, transceiver, and cable.

4. Specify parked, operating, and wake states
Body functions do not all need to remain available in every vehicle state. For example, windows and mirrors may be unnecessary in some states. Power behavior therefore belongs in the network and function requirements, not just in a later current-consumption check.
Define the state behavior explicitly
CiA describes selective wake-up, also called partial networking, as a way for rarely used CAN nodes to remain in low-power mode while selected nodes can be awakened when needed. LIN network management supports controlled wake and sleep for a cluster. These capabilities do not specify a target current draw for a particular vehicle.

Assign responsibility at each interface
AUTOSAR treats safety and security as explicit concerns in automotive software and network architecture. The ISO/DIS 25200 draft for commercial-vehicle body application units states that its data interface does not address safety and cybersecurity between the telematics gateway (TGU) and body application unit (BAU); the draft places requirements on each side. Because it is a draft in enquiry, it should not be presented as a finalized International Standard.
Apply the project’s safety analysis and cybersecurity engineering to the actual functions, interfaces, and threat model. Specify ownership for interface requirements, diagnostics, failure handling, and protections on both sides of a gateway. Neither a bus protocol nor the presence of a gateway is sufficient protection on its own.
6. Validate interoperability, EMC, and whole-vehicle behavior
Plan conformance and interoperability checks for the selected network and components, then separately verify that the integrated vehicle meets its requirements. The ISO 21111 in-vehicle Ethernet overview identifies conformance and interoperability test methods, while excluding electrical safety and EMC from that series’ scope. CiA CAN FD recommendations separately address physical-layer behavior and EMC tests for CAN signal-improvement transceivers.
Build tests around system behavior
- Confirm normal message exchange, timing margins, and diagnostics across the intended ECU configuration.
- Exercise fault behavior, including missing or invalid communication where the function’s safety and availability requirements call for it.
- Test wake, sleep, and network-state coordination in the integrated vehicle.
- Assess EMC and electrical safety against the applicable project requirements and standards; do not infer whole-vehicle compliance from interface conformance.
- Verify communication and responsibility boundaries across gateways and vehicle domains.
A standards-compliant interface does not prove whole-vehicle EMC, functional safety, cybersecurity, or successful interaction among every ECU. Validation must cover the assembled system and the specific requirements assigned to it.

Function allocation determines who communicates and what the exchanges must do. Those requirements constrain the network choice; the network choice in turn shapes topology, wiring, ECU support, and power behavior. Gateway boundaries affect integration and safety and security responsibilities, while validation checks whether the complete design works together. Treating these as linked decisions prevents a bus selection from being mistaken for a finished body control architecture.
