Its flower-inspired doors and roof drew attention, as did reported targets of up to 1,500 horsepower. But those figures were not verified production-car results, and the available record does not establish that the Dendrobium ever entered customer production.
What was the Dendrobium?
Vanda Electrics, a Singapore company, presented the Dendrobium as an all-electric hypercar concept at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show. The company worked with Williams Advanced Engineering as its technical partner. Singapore’s CNA and the Singapore Heritage Board both described the car as a Singapore-developed project.
The name and the car’s signature movement refer to dendrobium orchids. The roof and doors were designed to open together in a synchronized motion intended to resemble a flower opening. That striking feature helped distinguish the concept, but it did not mean a production version had been completed.
Vanda Electrics CEO Larissa Tan called it “the first Singaporean hypercar and the culmination of Vanda Electrics’ expertise in design and technology,” as quoted by CNA in 2017. That is the company’s characterization of the project, not independent confirmation that a production hypercar was built.

How fast was the Dendrobium supposed to be?
Contemporary coverage reported ambitious performance figures, but the available sources treated them as claims or expectations. CNA noted that technical details were limited; its 2017 report attributed the following figures to reporting at the time:
- Power and torque: Four Yasa motors were reported to produce 1,500 horsepower and 4,000 newton-meters of torque.
- Acceleration: A previously reported 0–100 km/h time of less than 2.6 seconds.
- Top speed: A previously reported maximum of 400 km/h.
Those numbers should not be read as results from an instrumented test or specifications confirmed for a delivered car. CNA explicitly noted that technical information was limited.

A separate set of 2017 expectations
SGInnovate’s 2017 profile gave a different set of projected figures: a range of 240 km, a top speed above 320 km/h, and an intended run of 10 to 20 cars. These were stated as expectations and production intentions, not demonstrated outcomes. They should be kept distinct from CNA’s reported figures rather than combined into one definitive specification sheet.
Did the Dendrobium go into production?
In July 2018, Dendrobium Automotive Limited announced plans to develop and produce the D-1 in the UK. The announcement linked the proposed car to Vanda Electrics’ original concept and described the work with Williams Advanced Engineering. It documents a production plan, not proof that production was completed or that customers received cars.

What happened to the Dendrobium D-1?
A 2022 Sgcarmart retrospective reported that the concept had apparently last appeared in public at the 2019 24 Hours of Le Mans. The same article said former Dendrobium Automotive CEO Nigel Gordon-Stewart’s LinkedIn profile described the business as on hold amid difficulty securing investment.

The Dendrobium remains a notable example of Singaporean automotive ambition: a locally developed concept with international engineering involvement and an unusually theatrical design. Its story also illustrates the difference between a compelling concept, a set of performance targets, and a production car. The first two are documented; the available sources do not establish the third.
