There is no universally correct winner between an S-61 and other civilian heavy-lift helicopters. The right aircraft is the one whose approved external-load system, useful payload, hover performance, fuel reserves, equipment and support match the specific lift. Published figures are useful screening data, but they are not interchangeable ratings: Croman describes a 10,000 lb maximum external lift for its S-61 aircraft, while Carson describes an upgraded S-61 cargo hook for loads up to 11,000 lb. Airbus lists a 4,750 kg maximum cargo sling load for the H225. Those figures come from different aircraft configurations and publishers, so they cannot be turned into a neutral league table.
Use the numbers to build a shortlist, then verify the exact airframe, hook or hoist, approved modifications, site conditions, fuel plan and operating rules. The framework below shows how to do that for construction, utility work, firefighting, timber harvesting, cargo delivery and other external-load missions.

What the S-61 comparison is really measuring
The Sikorsky S-61 is a helicopter family rather than one uniform specification. Civil operators use S-61-series aircraft for passenger, cargo, utility and external-load work. Croman says its fleet includes both standard- and restricted-category S-61-series aircraft and describes the platform as configurable for many applications. That means the registration, category, engines, hook, avionics, fuel system, structural changes and mission equipment matter as much as the model name.

- Maximum external load or sling load: the allowable load suspended beneath the aircraft with an approved cargo hook, line and rigging arrangement.
- Internal useful payload: people or cargo carried in the cabin or cargo compartment after accounting for the aircraft’s empty weight and installed equipment.
- Maximum payload: a provider’s payload term that may not mean the same thing as an external sling-load limit.
- Maximum takeoff weight: the aircraft’s certified weight ceiling, which includes the helicopter, crew, fuel, equipment and payload.
- Mission payload: what remains after the fuel, reserve, temperature, altitude, route, wind, equipment and operating limitations for one job are considered.
Confusing these terms is the fastest way to select the wrong aircraft. A helicopter can have a large structural hook limit but be unable to hover with that load at a hot, high worksite while carrying the fuel reserve required for the route home.
Published figures: useful reference points, not a ranking
The following values are published by the named organizations for the stated aircraft or modification. They are not a controlled test performed under common conditions.
| Aircraft or configuration | Published figure | What the figure means | Qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| S-61, Croman fleet description | 10,000 lb maximum external lift capacity | Provider-stated external-lift capability | Croman’s current fleet page; publication year not stated. It is not a universal rating for every S-61. |
| S-61 with Carson cargo-hook upgrade | Up to 11,000 lb external load | Load associated with the described upgraded hook and hardpoints | Carson’s current upgrade page; applies to the described modification and approved configuration. |
| S-61T, Carson aircraft-sales description | 4,300 kg maximum payload | Provider-stated payload for the modernized aircraft | Do not equate this payload term automatically with a 4,300 kg sling-load limit. |
| Airbus H225 | 4,750 kg maximum cargo sling load | Published external cargo limit | Airbus current technical-information page; page publication year not stated. Configuration and operating conditions still apply. |
| Airbus H225 | 11,160 kg maximum takeoff weight | Certified aircraft weight ceiling stated on the technical page | Not a payload figure; it includes the aircraft, fuel, crew, equipment and load. |
| Airbus H225 | 850 km maximum range with standard fuel tanks at sea level | Published range reference | Airbus figure for standard tanks at sea level, not a guaranteed range for a loaded external-load mission. |
| S-64 Skycrane | Not stated in the reviewed material | Relevant aerial-crane model for comparison | The FAA designation order identifies it separately from the S-61, but does not provide a matched civil load specification here. |
| K-MAX | Not stated in the reviewed material | Another purpose-built external-load design often considered by operators | No current, comparable civil heavy-lift specification was established for this comparison. |
Croman’s S-61 figure is available on its fleet page. Carson’s hook description is on its S-61 upgrades page, and its S-61T payload statement appears on the aircraft-sales page. Airbus publishes the H225 values on its technical-information page.
Why apparently similar lift numbers differ
External load versus internal payload
A sling load hangs below the helicopter and changes its aerodynamics, center-of-gravity envelope, visibility, control workload and emergency options. Internal cargo stays inside the fuselage and may be limited by floor loading, door dimensions, tie-down points or cabin volume. A provider may therefore publish a maximum payload that cannot be substituted for a hook limit. Carson’s 4,300 kg S-61T maximum-payload statement is an example: it is useful information, but it does not by itself establish the aircraft’s approved external sling load.
Hook, hardpoints and rigging
The hook assembly is part of the lifting system, not an accessory that can be assumed interchangeable. The hook, belly hardpoints, release controls, load cell, electrical wiring, line length and rigging method must be approved for the aircraft. Carson describes an S-61 cargo-hook upgrade with 11,000 lb hardpoints; that is a statement about the specified upgrade, not permission to fit the same equipment to every S-61 without approved data.

Airframe category and modification status
Two S-61s with the same basic type designation can have different operating approvals, maintenance status and equipment. Croman identifies standard- and restricted-category aircraft in its fleet. A restricted-category airframe may be suitable for particular aerial-work roles but may not have the same passenger, route or operating privileges as another aircraft. The registration-specific flight manual, limitations and approved configuration control the operation.
Weight, altitude and temperature
Hover capability falls as density altitude rises. The job-site elevation, air temperature, humidity, wind, rotor clearance and required hover height all affect the power margin. Fuel consumed before the lift can improve gross weight, but the aircraft must still retain the reserve and diversion fuel required by its operating rules and company procedures. A brochure maximum at sea level cannot be carried unchanged into a hot mountain worksite.
Mission equipment
A firefighting tank, long line, personnel hoist, camera, cargo mirror, additional radios, protective equipment or utility gear adds weight and can change drag or center of gravity. The aircraft must be evaluated in the exact equipment state in which it will fly. Removing seats or installing a different hook can alter the useful load, but only within approved procedures and weight-and-balance data.
Comparison axes that matter on a real job
1. Approved external-load limit
Start with the aircraft-specific approved limit for the installed hook, line, swivel, cargo net and rigging. Ask the operator for the relevant flight-manual limitation, supplemental type certificate or other approved data. A marketing page can identify a capability; it does not replace the controlling limitation for the individual helicopter.
2. Internal useful payload and loading geometry
Determine whether the job is better served by a sling, cabin cargo, a mixed configuration or repeated shuttle flights. Compare door size, floor loading, tie-down points, pallet compatibility, passenger seating, loading time and the ability to keep the center of gravity within limits. For a bulky but light load, cabin volume may matter more than hook capacity.

3. Hover performance at the worksite
Request performance data for the planned pressure altitude, temperature, wind and hover height. Ask whether the quoted payload assumes in-ground-effect or out-of-ground-effect hover, and whether the aircraft can climb or reject the load if conditions deteriorate. If the operator cannot show a usable performance margin, a lower headline capacity is irrelevant.

Map the route, staging points, loading cycles, weather diversions and reserve requirement. A helicopter with a larger nominal sling load may need more fuel or more frequent refueling, while a lighter aircraft may complete the same job with fewer fuel stops. Compare the number of productive lifts per sortie rather than only pounds per lift.
5. Load shape and precision
Long-line construction work, power-line components, tree sections and firefighting equipment each impose different control and visibility demands. Examine line length, tag-line procedures, release reliability, pilot visibility, ground-crew communication and the ability to place the load precisely. A helicopter that can carry a heavier compact load may not be the best tool for a long, wind-sensitive component.
6. Dispatch and maintenance support
Availability is part of capacity. Review spare parts access, engine and transmission support, component overhaul intervals, inspection status, crew availability and recovery plans for an aircraft grounded away from base. Carson lists S-61 maintenance, overhaul, parts and modernization services, as well as composite-blade work; those categories are relevant when assessing support for a particular airframe, but availability must be confirmed for the operator and location.
7. Certification and operating rules
Confirm the jurisdiction, aircraft category, operating certificate, aerial-work authority, pilot qualifications, load-control procedures and any site-specific restrictions. A helicopter may be technically capable of a lift yet unavailable for the intended contract because its category or operating approval does not match the mission.

8. Total job suitability and cost
Price the completed lift: mobilization, ferry legs, fuel, ground crew, rigging, standby time, weather delays, refueling logistics, insurance and the expected number of sorties. A simple hourly rate or maximum-load figure can hide a poor fit if the aircraft needs more cycles or cannot work in the required weather window.
How the main comparison aircraft fit into the decision
Sikorsky S-61 and S-61T
The S-61 is a mature utility platform with civil applications that include precision external-load placement, power-line and ski-lift construction, aerial firefighting, timber harvesting and external cargo delivery. Croman lists those mission categories among its services on its services page. The practical question is not whether an S-61 can perform one of those roles in general, but whether the offered aircraft has the right hook, engines, fuel arrangement, category, equipment and current maintenance status.
Carson markets a modernized S-61T and describes a 4,300 kg maximum payload, configurable mission equipment and a cargo hook with 11,000 lb hardpoints. Its services page lists overhaul, maintenance, parts and modernization, while its composite-blades page describes blade services. Treat each item as configuration-specific provider information and request the approved documentation for the aircraft being offered.
Airbus H225
The H225 is a current civil helicopter product positioned for passenger, aerial-work, law-enforcement and search-and-rescue roles. Airbus provides product context on its H225 product page and publishes the sling-load, maximum-takeoff-weight and range figures in its technical information. Its published 4,750 kg sling-load value is a useful civil comparison point, but the H225 still has to be evaluated at the actual site, fuel state, equipment fit and reserve requirement.
S-64 Skycrane
The S-64 is a separate aircraft designation from the S-61. The FAA’s aircraft type-designator order lists the types separately, which is enough to establish that they are not alternate names for one model. A reliable side-by-side load comparison requires current civil specifications, approved configurations and operating assumptions that are not provided here, so do not assign an unsupported capacity or ranking.

K-MAX
K-MAX is often considered for external-load work because its design is associated with aerial lifting, but a current, comparable civil specification is not established in the material available for this article. Treat it as a candidate for operator inquiry, not as a model with a verified numerical advantage over the S-61 or H225.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Step-by-step method for selecting an aircraft
- Define the load. Record gross weight, dimensions, center of gravity, lifting points, fragility, wind sensitivity and whether it can be carried internally or must be slung.
- Define the site. Document elevation, temperature range, approach and departure paths, hover height, obstacles, landing areas, ground access and available refueling.
- Define the route and cycle. Measure ferry distance, loaded distance, return distance, loading time, unloading time, expected sorties and weather windows.
- Set the fuel and reserve rule. State the reserve, alternate or diversion requirement that applies to the operator and jurisdiction before calculating payload.
- Request aircraft-specific documents. Obtain the registration, flight manual performance charts, weight-and-balance report, hook or hoist data, equipment list, modification approvals and current maintenance status.
- Check the approved load system. Match the hook, line, swivel, net, spreader, tag lines and release controls to the intended load. Verify rated components and inspection dates.
- Run the performance calculation. Have the operator calculate gross weight, center of gravity, hover margin, climb or escape capability and reserve fuel for the worst expected conditions, not an average day.
- Compare productivity. Estimate usable payload per sortie, cycle time, refueling interruptions, standby exposure and the number of aircraft or backup days needed to finish the job.
- Audit support and compliance. Confirm crew qualifications, operating approvals, insurance, ground procedures, emergency plans, maintenance support and the authority that will oversee the operation.
- Choose on documented mission fit. Select the aircraft with the best verified margin and schedule reliability, even if another model has the larger brochure maximum.
Applying the framework to common missions
| Mission | Questions that decide the aircraft | Why a headline lift number is insufficient |
|---|---|---|
| Power-line or ski-lift construction | Can the helicopter place long, awkward components accurately? Is the line length adequate, and can crews communicate continuously? | Precision, visibility and wind control can limit the job before structural capacity does. |
| Aerial firefighting | What tank or bucket is approved, how far is the water source, what is the refill cycle, and what density altitude is expected? | Tank, plumbing, crew and water-cycle equipment consume payload and affect endurance. |
| Timber harvesting | What are the piece weights, landing-zone dimensions, cycle distance, snag hazards and required release procedures? | Repeated cycles and forest turbulence determine productivity more than one maximum lift. |
| Construction cargo delivery | Can the load be rigged safely, placed within tolerance and carried with the required reserve over the route? | Shape, center of gravity, tag lines and staging logistics may rule out a nominally powerful aircraft. |
| Emergency or remote resupply | What fuel, weather, communications, landing or hover options and alternate sites are available? | Range and reserve assumptions can reduce the useful payload substantially. |
Certification, modifications and the FAA record
For a U.S.-registered aircraft, the FAA explains how to locate the applicable Type Certificate Data Sheet and design-approval information in its TCDS FAQ and design-approvals resource. Use those records with the aircraft’s approved flight manual, equipment list and modification paperwork. A type certificate for the basic model does not automatically approve every later hook, hoist, blade, avionics package or structural change.
A 2025 U.S. Department of Transportation special-conditions notice concerns a hoist overload-protection device on certain S-61A, S-61L and S-61N aircraft modified under a supplemental type certificate. The notice states that the modified aircraft “will have a novel or unusual design feature when compared to the state of technology envisioned in the airworthiness standards for transport category rotorcraft.” That language addresses the specified design change. It is not a blanket certification statement about every S-61, every hoist or every operator. The notice is available at the U.S. DOT Federal Register page.

Support, ownership and charter considerations
Moving from a technical comparison to a contract requires more than selecting a model. Croman markets S-61 heavy-lift and aerial-service operations for construction, utility work, firefighting, timber harvesting and cargo delivery. Carson describes maintenance, overhaul, parts, modernization and composite-blade services. These categories help frame due diligence, but they do not establish that a particular aircraft, crew or service slot is available for a given project.
- Ask for the aircraft registration, base location and expected mobilization date.
- Confirm the operator’s maintenance-control system, component status and plan for unscheduled downtime.
- Verify that replacement parts and approved repairs are available where the work will occur.
- Review pilot experience with the specific load type, long-line length, terrain and weather.
- Define who supplies rigging, ground crew, signal personnel, staging areas and fuel.
- Specify weather minima, cancellation rules, standby charges and recovery arrangements in the contract.
- Require a written performance and weight-and-balance review for the planned conditions.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Declaring a winner from one number: a maximum hook figure does not reveal hover margin, range, cycle time or support.
- Mixing units and definitions: pounds of external load, kilograms of internal payload and maximum takeoff weight describe different things.
- Treating an upgrade as universal: an upgraded hook or hoist applies only when installed and approved on the relevant aircraft.
- Ignoring restricted-category limits: category and operating approval can matter as much as airframe performance.
- Using sea-level brochure data at altitude: density altitude and reserve fuel can reduce the allowable mission load.
- Assuming range is fixed: Airbus’s H225 range figure is for standard tanks at sea level; an external-load sortie with reserves and mission equipment is a different calculation.
- Skipping document review: model names do not prove that modifications, hooks, blades or hoists are approved for the proposed operation.
- Comparing aircraft without a defined job: the best choice for a short precision placement may differ from the best choice for long-distance resupply.
A practical decision worksheet
| Decision item | Record before choosing |
|---|---|
| Load | Gross weight, dimensions, lifting points, center of gravity, fragility and rigging plan |
| Site | Elevation, temperature, wind, hover height, obstacles, landing or staging areas |
| Aircraft | Registration, category, engines, empty weight, installed equipment and current limitations |
| Load system | Hook or hoist model, rated components, line length, release system and approval documents |
| Performance | Allowable gross weight, hover margin, climb or escape margin and reserve fuel in worst conditions |
| Productivity | Payload per sortie, cycle time, refueling plan, expected sorties and weather window |
| Support | Parts, maintenance, crew, mobilization, backup plan and recovery arrangements |
| Compliance | Operating certificate, aircraft category, pilot qualifications, local rules and site permissions |
| Commercial result | Total job cost and schedule risk, not only hourly rate or maximum advertised lift |
Bottom line
The S-61 remains a credible civilian heavy-lift option when the exact aircraft, hook system, mission equipment and support plan fit the work. Croman’s 10,000 lb external-lift description and Carson’s upgraded-hook figure of up to 11,000 lb show why configuration matters, while the H225’s published 4,750 kg sling-load figure provides a useful but not like-for-like civil reference. S-64 and K-MAX should be evaluated through current aircraft-specific documents rather than assumed rankings. For any serious lift, select the helicopter that delivers a verified performance margin, legal operating basis, reliable support and the required number of productive cycles at the actual site.
