The real decision is whether a particular older, rear-wheel-drive Lexus—with its mileage, rust, title, modifications, transmission and maintenance history—fits your risk tolerance better than a new Corolla’s predictable purchase baseline.

In the documented 2002 Canadian specification, the engine is the 2JZ-GE: a 2,997 cc (3.0-liter) DOHC, 24-valve inline-six with VVT-i. It is rated at 215 horsepower at 5,800 rpm and 218 lb-ft of torque at 3,800 rpm, and Lexus recommends premium unleaded fuel. That engine code matters. The IS 300 uses a naturally aspirated 2JZ-GE, not the twin-turbo 2JZ-GTE associated with the Supra. The auction car was unmodified, had a clean title and a manual transmission—attributes that can command a premium. The same official page estimates 32 mpg city, 41 mpg highway and 35 mpg combined for the LE. Those are Toyota’s estimates for the specified mainland-U.S. vehicle, not a guarantee for every driver or route. The available evidence does not normalize fuel prices, insurance, maintenance or repairs against an IS 300, so it cannot support a claim that the Corolla will cost less to operate overall.

- Confirm the exact car and price type. Record the model year, asking price, mileage and location. Mark whether the number is an advertisement or a completed sale, because the reported $6,300–$21,995 figures are asking prices while the $13,318 figure is an auction-sales average.
- Check the title and history. Verify that the title status, accident history and odometer information match the seller’s description. The high-value $27,000 example specifically had a clean title; do not assume that condition for a cheaper car.
- Inspect for corrosion. Rust and regional exposure can change the value of an otherwise similar IS 300. Examine structural areas and underbody components in person or have an independent inspector document them before money changes hands.
- Separate stock cars from modified cars. Record engine, suspension, wheel, exhaust and appearance modifications. The premium auction example was unmodified, and the market report says stock, well-kept cars tend to command more. Modifications can reduce buyer pool and complicate diagnosis even when they look desirable.
- Verify maintenance records. Ask for dated invoices and identify what has been serviced, by whom and at what mileage. Missing records should be priced as uncertainty rather than treated as proof that maintenance was completed.
- Evaluate the transmission you actually want. The documented 2002 configuration offered a five-speed automatic and an available five-speed manual. Manual cars can carry a collector premium, but condition and clutch history still matter.
- Budget the first year separately. Keep a reserve for inspection findings, tires, fluids, age-related repairs, registration and insurance. The published price comparisons do not include those costs.
When the Lexus makes financial sense
You value rear-wheel drive and the 2JZ character
The IS 300 offers a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout and an inline-six with the outputs documented above. You can verify condition, not just mileage
A lower odometer reading helps explain the $21,995 listing and $27,000 sale, but mileage alone does not establish value. A higher-mileage car with a clean title, little corrosion, stock configuration and complete records may be a better purchase than a lower-mileage car with neglected maintenance or hidden damage.

The apparent savings are compensation for buying an older vehicle without the new-car baseline represented by the Corolla’s current MSRP. If an inspection uncovers corrosion or major deferred work, the purchase can quickly lose its price advantage.
