Should You Buy a Used Electric Pickup Now? How Depreciation Changes the Math

Used electric pickups can be cheaper after steep depreciation, but a bargain depends on local pricing, configuration, battery condition and warranty—not a headline percentage.

Yes, depreciation can improve the value proposition of a used electric pickup—but only when the truck’s local price, equipment, mileage and condition beat a comparable new truck’s real transaction price. Published residual figures are useful benchmarks, not promises for the VIN in front of you.

Recent data show meaningful declines for some electric pickups. The opportunity is real, but it is highly vehicle-specific. Use the figures below to frame a negotiation, then verify pricing, battery condition, warranty coverage, charging access and towing capability for the exact truck you may buy.

What the current depreciation evidence actually shows

A one-year KBB estimate for a 2025 F-150 Lightning XLT

Kelley Blue Book’s valuation page for a 2025 Ford F-150 Lightning XLT listed a $46,650 fair purchase price for ZIP code 20101. The page estimated that the truck had lost $22,240, or 33%, in one year. That percentage compares KBB’s prior value with its current estimate; it is not necessarily the amount an original owner paid or the cash loss on a particular truck.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

KBB also displayed estimated trade-in values of about $38,300 to $42,300 and private-party values of about $41,540 to $45,840, depending on condition. Those figures were shown as valid through October 10, 2026. They describe different transaction settings, so a dealer trade-in number should not be compared directly with a private-party asking price.

The ZIP-specific result is important. KBB says its pricing process uses actual consumer prices, registration data and other inputs, while also warning: This is not a guarantee of actual depreciation. Local inventory, equipment, mileage and condition can move a real deal substantially above or below the estimate.

Five-year retention estimates do not produce one universal ranking

iSeeCars’ 2026 analysis estimated five-year value retention of 46.7% for the Ford F-150 Lightning and 44.9% for the Rivian R1T. Its reported average for electric trucks was 44.6%. In that category analysis, iSeeCars compared new-vehicle MSRP with the equivalent five-year-old used-vehicle price and analyzed more than three million vehicles. Its broader vehicle scoring work cites a sample of more than 12 million vehicles; those sample descriptions should not be treated as interchangeable.

Kelley Blue Book’s 2026 Best Resale Value Awards named the Rivian R1T the electric-truck winner. KBB’s award uses a separate model and a separate data set: projected auction values from its January/February 2026 Residual Value Guide for 2026 model-year vehicles. The projection assumes an average-condition vehicle with 75,000 miles at the end of a five-year lease or ownership period. KBB describes the assumption this way: Residual values reflect projected future auction values for vehicles in average condition with 75,000 miles at the end of a five-year lease or ownership period.

These results are not contradictory. iSeeCars reports a model-based retention percentage, while KBB gives an award based on projected residual auction values. Neither is a quote for a specific used pickup.

Sales declines are context, not a cause of depreciation

The Cox Automotive/Kelley Blue Book 2025 annual sales table recorded 27,307 U.S. F-150 Lightning sales, down from 33,510 in 2024, an 18.5% year-over-year decline. It recorded 7,416 Rivian R1T sales, down from 11,085, a 33.1% decline. Those totals show market volume, but they do not establish why a particular truck lost value or what a specific local listing should cost.

Why waiting can help—and why it does not make every used truck a bargain

Depreciation helps when the used truck’s all-in price is materially below the price of an equivalent new truck after real dealer discounts and included equipment. The comparison must be like-for-like: model year, trim, battery and drive configuration, options, mileage and condition. A low-mile, well-equipped used truck may still be expensive if a new truck is being sold with substantial discounts. Conversely, a high-mile truck with missing equipment can be poor value even after a large percentage drop.

Residual forecasts also describe an average vehicle. They cannot account for a particular battery’s condition, a repaired accident, tire wear, charging hardware, software status or remaining warranty. Treat a forecast as a starting point for questions, not as permission to skip an inspection.

How to compare a used electric pickup with a new one

  1. Define the job before looking at prices. Write down your expected payload, trailer weight, commute length, winter use, charging locations and minimum range. A truck that cannot meet those requirements is not a bargain at any price.
  2. Collect local numbers on the same date. Record asking prices and, where possible, completed transaction prices for several comparable used trucks. Check a current valuation for your ZIP code. KBB’s $46,650 figure, for example, was specific to ZIP 20101 and the date range shown on its page.
  3. Build a true new-truck comparison. Use the new vehicle’s actual selling price, including dealer discounts and mandatory fees, rather than MSRP alone. Match trim, battery, drive system, tow equipment and included charging hardware.
  4. Normalize the configuration. Note model year, odometer, battery and range version, cab and bed configuration, packages, wheel and tire setup, and any software or equipment differences. A retention percentage for a model line cannot settle a trim-level price dispute.
  5. Separate transaction types. Keep dealer trade-in, private-party and retail-dealer values in separate columns. KBB’s trade-in range and private-party range for the Lightning XLT illustrate why these numbers should not be blended.
  6. Verify the individual VIN. Obtain service records, title and accident history, recall completion, warranty terms and evidence of battery-system work. Have an independent technician inspect the truck and confirm that charging equipment and cables are present.
  7. Calculate ownership costs that affect your decision. Include insurance, registration, financing, tires, home-charging installation if needed, public-charging use and likely towing-related energy costs. Do not assume a residual estimate captures these expenses.
  8. Negotiate from the evidence. Present comparable local listings and the price of a similarly equipped new truck. Ask the seller to explain mileage, condition, missing equipment and any warranty limitation rather than arguing from a national average.

Vehicle-specific checks that can erase an apparent discount

Battery and charging condition

Ask what charging equipment comes with the truck, whether it has been used primarily on home or public charging, and whether any battery or high-voltage components were replaced. Request documentation rather than relying on a dashboard estimate. Confirm that the truck can use the charging locations you will depend on and that the charging rate fits your routine.

A battery-health number was not established in the cited valuation data, so do not infer battery condition from the depreciation percentage. A professional inspection and the manufacturer’s diagnostic process are more relevant to one vehicle than a fleet-level residual forecast.

Towing, payload and range under load

Check the door-jamb payload label, tow rating for the exact configuration and the hitch equipment installed. Towing can materially change energy use and range, especially in cold or high-speed conditions. If you regularly tow, evaluate a demonstration route or obtain manufacturer guidance for the specific battery and axle configuration instead of relying on a model’s headline range.

Condition, records and coverage

  • Inspect underbody and battery-case areas for impact damage or corrosion.
  • Match the VIN, title and service history; investigate gaps or inconsistent mileage.
  • Confirm open recalls and documented completion.
  • Read the remaining battery, powertrain and bumper-to-bumper warranty terms, including transfer rules and exclusions.
  • Price worn tires, damaged wheels, windshield chips and missing charging cables before agreeing to a number.

Common mistakes when interpreting depreciation numbers

Treating a residual projection as a guaranteed resale price

KBB’s published language is explicit that its residuals are projections for an average-condition, 75,000-mile vehicle after five years. Your truck may have different mileage, condition, equipment or local demand. iSeeCars’ percentages are estimates from a large data set, not an offer to buy your vehicle.

Mixing methodologies into a single ranking

The R1T’s KBB award does not cancel iSeeCars’ separate retention result, and the Lightning’s 46.7% iSeeCars figure is not a KBB award score. Keep the provider, date, assumptions and definition attached to every number in your notes.

Comparing MSRP with a discounted used truck

Electric-vehicle transaction prices can move quickly as inventory and incentives change. Compare a used listing with the new truck’s real selling price for the same equipment. If the new truck is only slightly more expensive, its newer warranty and lower mileage may justify paying the difference.

Assuming sales declines explain your truck’s price

The 2025 Lightning and R1T sales declines are useful market context, but they do not identify the cause of depreciation. Local supply, trim mix, fleet purchases and dealer strategy can all affect observed prices; the cited sales table does not separate those factors.

Using a one-year percentage to predict every future year

The 33% KBB estimate for one 2025 Lightning XLT is a snapshot, not a schedule. Depreciation is rarely uniform, and a future estimate can change as new models, equipment, incentives and market conditions change.

A practical decision framework for buying now

Your situation What to do
The used truck is clearly below a comparable new transaction price, has clean records and meets your range, payload and charging needs. Proceed to an independent inspection and written warranty verification; the depreciation may be working in your favor.
The used price is close to new, or the used truck lacks equipment included on the new vehicle. Ask the seller to close the gap or compare the new purchase directly. The percentage discount alone is not compelling.
Battery condition, title history or warranty transfer is unclear. Pause the purchase until documentation and inspection resolve the uncertainty.
You need frequent heavy towing, lack reliable charging or require unusually long range. Test the exact use case first. A lower price cannot compensate for a truck that fails your operating requirements.
You are relying on an old valuation page or national average. Refresh local values and listings immediately before making an offer; KBB figures can change and its cited page was date-limited.

What the evidence supports—and what it does not

The available figures support a narrow conclusion: some recent electric pickups have experienced substantial depreciation, creating potential value for a careful used buyer. They do not prove that every electric pickup depreciates faster than a gasoline truck, that every used example is a bargain, or that one model is best for every owner.

Use the 2025 Lightning XLT estimate, the iSeeCars retention figures and KBB’s R1T award as context for asking better questions. The purchase decision should turn on the exact truck’s local transaction price, configuration, condition, battery and warranty documentation, and your own charging, towing and payload requirements.

Bottom line

Waiting may have improved your negotiating position, but depreciation only becomes a deal when the specific used electric pickup is priced below a genuinely comparable new truck and passes vehicle-specific checks. Recheck local values on the day you buy, keep valuation methods separate, and let verified condition and real-world fit—not a headline percentage—decide.
