Shell Starship 3.0 is not one truck with two powertrains: it refers to separate demonstrators. The U.S. Starship 3.0 NG runs on natural gas and has a reported 2023 California efficiency demonstration; the China-based Starship 3.0 Hybrid is a Shell–FAW TRUCKS concept platform testing hybrid and battery thermal-management technologies. Neither is a retail production model.
What is the Shell Starship 3.0 truck?
Starship is Shell’s heavy-duty trucking initiative, which the company says began in 2018. Its aim is to show how technologies such as lighter construction, reduced aerodynamic drag, low-rolling-resistance tires, and drivetrain and operating improvements can work together. The 3.0 name covers distinct demonstrator vehicles, not a single truck that combines every feature or result.

Shell describes the NG vehicle as the first natural-gas-powered Class 8 truck to operate within a national racing-series fleet in North America. That distinction is Shell’s claim, not an independent certification.
How much fuel did the Starship 3.0 NG use?
Shell reports approximately 9 miles per gallon diesel gallon equivalent (MPG DGE) for the 2023 demonstration and around 890 miles of range for the fully loaded truck. These are figures for that demonstrator and run, not a general fuel-economy rating for natural-gas trucks.

The California test covered an 840-mile loop. Shell says the truck ran with a fully loaded trailer near 80,000 pounds gross vehicle weight, the maximum permissible weight it cites for the Class 8 run. The result is more meaningful with that load and route attached: it describes a heavy truck working near its stated weight limit, rather than an unloaded or lightly loaded vehicle.
What does “three times more freight per kilogram of CO₂” mean?
Shell says the NG demonstrator moved three times more freight per kilogram of CO₂ emitted than the U.S. average Class 8 diesel truck. The comparison is based on tailpipe emissions expressed as CO₂ equivalent. Shell says average-truck parameters came from NACFE, while emissions factors and fuel parameters came from CA-GREET 3.0.

In plain terms, the comparison combines freight moved with tailpipe emissions: it is a measure of freight productivity relative to emissions, not a claim that the truck emits one-third as much CO₂ in every situation. It also does not establish a lifecycle-emissions advantage. The stated boundary is tailpipe CO₂-equivalent emissions, not the emissions involved in producing and supplying the fuels, manufacturing the vehicle, or other lifecycle stages.
What changed with the Shell–FAW hybrid?
Shell and FAW TRUCKS launched the Starship 3.0 Hybrid collaboration in May 2023. Shell describes the truck as a technology demonstration platform for evaluating hybrid powertrain, lubrication, and battery thermal-management technologies under operating conditions—not as a production vehicle.

In a release dated 9 September 2026, Shell said a jointly developed battery pack using Shell immersion-cooling fluid had been tested and integrated into the concept vehicle. Shell describes the fluid as electrically insulating and says it surrounds the battery cells to help manage heat. Shell also says CATARC independently verified the battery-pack testing and vehicle evaluations.

These are company-reported early indications, not final production performance figures. Shell said it would release final performance data after validation. The figures therefore show what the project is investigating, but do not establish results for a customer vehicle or a complete commercial operating cycle.

Shell’s materials name demonstrator components and fluids, including a Cummins X15N natural-gas engine, Bridgestone-associated low-rolling-resistance tires, and Shell Rotella NG 5W-30 heavy-duty engine oil, Shell Spirax S6 GME 40 transmission fluid, Shell Spirax S6 AXME 75W-85 axle oil, and Shell Rotella ELC HD coolant for the NG model. The hybrid has a separate fluid list. These details document the demonstrators; they do not establish universal fitment or current retail availability. Check the vehicle or equipment manufacturer’s specifications before selecting any fluid or component.

Shell presents both 3.0 vehicles as technology demonstrators or concept platforms. Its cited materials do not give a sale price or announce production availability, so there is no substantiated basis to treat either as a truck buyers can order.
What the Starship project does—and does not—show
The NG run offers a specific, heavily loaded demonstration of integrated efficiency measures, with reported fuel-equivalent economy, range, and a tailpipe-based freight-emissions comparison. The hybrid project extends the initiative into battery thermal management and reports early validation indications. Together, they show the direction of Shell’s demonstrations; they do not establish a universal efficiency result, a lifecycle emissions ranking, or final commercial hybrid performance.
