Sharrow says its twisted loops reduce tip vortices and cavitation, which it claims can improve efficiency by up to 30% and make the boat run quieter and smoother. Those are manufacturer claims. The launch details reported in September 2024, including the US$1,995 base price, lead time and warranty, need to be checked against current manufacturer information before you rely on them.
What the MX-A changes about a conventional prop
A conventional marine propeller ends each blade in a flat or gently curved tip. As the blade turns, pressure differences at the tip shed a spiral of water called a tip vortex. That spiral carries energy away without pushing the boat forward, and at higher speeds or loads the low-pressure zones can also form cavitation bubbles that collapse on the blade surface. Both effects waste thrust and add noise.
Sharrow Marine’s design replaces the conventional blade tips with gently twisted loops. The company’s pitch is that the loop shape keeps the flow attached to the blade for longer, which reduces the tip vortex and the cavitation that follows from it. The New Atlas article that introduced the design, published September 19, 2024, describes the mechanism in those terms. It is a description of intent and the company’s engineering rationale, not an independent measurement of the flow around the blade.
Sharrow describes the MX-A as an extension of a propeller technology it first developed for larger engines. Its founder and CEO, Greg Sharrow, put it this way in the New Atlas piece: “With the MX-A series, we’re taking the same groundbreaking propeller technology we pioneered for larger engines and making it accessible to boats in the 40 – 200-hp range.” That is the company’s own statement about its product line.

Which outboards the MX-A is meant for
The article reports an application range of 40 to 200 hp. It lists the motor categories Sharrow named for the line:
- Two-stroke outboards
- Four-stroke outboards
- Command thrust models
- In-line four-cylinder models
- Power thrust models
Brands named in the same reporting include Mercury, Yamaha, Honda, Suzuki, Tohatsu, Johnson and Evinrude. That list describes the brands the line was intended to cover at launch. It is not a model-by-model fitment chart, and the article does not say which specific engine years, gearcase types or rotations were tested for each brand.

Because “40–200 hp” and a brand list do not confirm that a given propeller will fit a given motor, treat the range as a starting point. Before you order:
- Note your outboard’s exact make, model, horsepower rating, and serial or model-year label.
- Identify the gearcase type and the rotation of the propeller shaft (standard right-hand or counter-rotating left-hand).
- Confirm with Sharrow Marine or an authorized dealer that the MX-A is listed for that exact combination.
- Ask for the diameter, pitch and hub specification the company recommends for your motor and boat, and check that they match what is on your current prop.
- Ask whether the sale includes a return or exchange option if the fit or the performance is not what you expected.
What the efficiency and noise claims rest on
The headline figure is an efficiency improvement of up to 30%. New Atlas reported it as a product claim attributed to Sharrow. The article’s wording makes clear that this is the top of a claimed range and not an average result. The same reporting describes quieter and smoother running. None of these claims has been verified as a general result for outboards, and no marketwide statistic on outboard propeller use or on the size of any customer group was established from the reviewed material.

Two kinds of evidence are available beyond the launch article:
- Manufacturer performance reports. Sharrow Marine publishes an index of performance reports for named vessel and engine combinations. These are company-published results, so read them as manufacturer-reported examples, not independent tests. Check which boat, motor, load and speed each report used.
- Third-party write-ups on specific boats. BoatTEST describes a comparison on a World Cat 325 DC fitted with twin Yamaha 300 hp outboards. That is a single, specific configuration. It can show how the design behaved on that boat, but it does not predict the outcome on a different hull, motor or load.
A useful way to read all three sources together is to ask whether the boat in the test resembles yours in hull weight, motor size, propeller diameter, typical load, and the speeds you run most. If the match is poor, the reported gain is best treated as a hint, not a forecast.

How to decide whether the MX-A is worth considering
A loop-tip propeller is a reasonable option to evaluate if you already know your motor and boat are inside the listed range and you want to test a different tip shape. It is less compelling if you are happy with your current prop’s performance, or if you cannot confirm fit for your exact motor. When comparing it with a conventional propeller or another design, use the same axes for each:
- Exact motor and gearcase fit, including rotation
- The boat and operating profile it is meant for, such as cruising, planing, or heavy loads
- Purchase price, plus the cost of any replacement or service
- Material and construction
- Performance evidence from setups that resemble yours, in the same load and speed conditions
The launch article and the manufacturer’s performance index provide context on these points. Neither establishes that one propeller is best for all outboards.
If you are a car enthusiast reading this on carcody.com, the same logic applies to aftermarket parts: the claim, the test conditions and the fit are separate questions, and the launch price is only the first of them.

The Bottom Line
The MX-A is a credible product to evaluate for 40–200 hp outboards, but the 30% efficiency figure, the 40–200 hp range and the September 2024 price and warranty are all company or launch-era claims. Confirm exact motor fit, rotation and current terms with Sharrow Marine or a dealer, and judge the performance on setups that closely resemble yours.
