On Tuesday, October 6, 2026, India’s Sensex opened 78 points higher at 72,460.59, while the Nifty 50 opened 27 points higher at 22,583.45, according to NDTV. The modest gains came a day before the Reserve Bank of India’s Monetary Policy Committee was expected to announce its decision on Wednesday, October 7. These are opening figures, not closing levels or a measure of how markets ultimately reacted to the policy announcement.

What happened at the October 6 market open?

NDTV reported that the BSE Sensex began Tuesday’s session 78 points higher at 72,460.59. The Nifty 50 opened 27 points higher at 22,583.45. The report characterized the opening as relatively flat, despite both benchmarks starting in positive territory.

Benchmark Reported opening level Change at the open Observation
BSE Sensex 72,460.59 +78 points Opening snapshot on October 6, 2026; reported by NDTV
Nifty 50 22,583.45 +27 points Opening snapshot on October 6, 2026; reported by NDTV

NDTV’s report is the source for these figures; matching official exchange data was not available for independent cross-checking. An opening level captures where trading began, not the benchmark’s eventual session close.

Why were investors watching the RBI?

The RBI Monetary Policy Committee had begun a three-day meeting on Monday, October 5, and was due to announce its policy decision on Wednesday, October 7, according to NDTV’s October 6 report. The headline’s “tomorrow” refers to that publication date; the event date is October 7.

NDTV said the policy repo rate remained at 5.25% and that markets were watching for the possibility of a hike. Those statements should be read as the report’s description of the rate and investor focus at the time, not as confirmation of the October 7 outcome. An official RBI result for that meeting is not established here.

What market backdrop did the report cite?

NDTV noted that Asian stocks had risen after a technology-led rally took the Nasdaq to a record close. It also reported that Brent crude was near $100 a barrel after falling 1.9% overnight, citing increased Middle East exports and a G7 supply pledge.

That context describes factors investors were following; it does not establish that the Nasdaq rally or the oil-price move caused the Sensex’s opening gain. The report provides no basis for assigning the Indian benchmarks’ move to a single driver.

What the opening figures can—and cannot—show

  • They show that both major benchmarks started the October 6 session above their respective prior closes, as reported by NDTV.
  • They do not show whether either index stayed higher through the day or where it finished.
  • They do not reveal the market’s eventual response to the RBI decision scheduled for October 7.

Because the figures are a dated opening snapshot, they should not be presented as a current market update or as evidence of the policy announcement’s effect.
